HI All.

I just bought a Record RPML 300C compact swivel head lathe, from a
friend of mine.

its an impressive mini lathe, (to me anyway, its a pretty BLUE) it
only has 3 speeds 540, 1140, & 2440 rpm.

I am only planning of doing some small turnings. due to its size.

does anybody in the group own one of these, or knows somebody who
does, Have any Idea how much they cost new???
also do you think I made a wise choose...as far as the brand is
concerned.. so if you have any suggestions, or warning what not to
attempt with it, I would be glad to hear from you.

looking forward for your comments.

Hello Tom,

The Record RPML-300 is a good little lathe. I've had one for several years
(every since they first became available here in the US). The lathe originally
cost $399. I spent another 50 or 60 dollars on a stand and about that much for a
handle set to make it easier to use. I've turned a lot of small stuff on it and
bowls up to 8 or 9 inches.

Its negatives are the adjustments as they came from the factory, several wrench
sizes required and several Allen wrench sizes also required. A set of handles
can fix that problem. Another unhandy thing is not being able to slide the
tailstock off the end of the ways without unscrewing it completely. Sometimes,
it is nice to have the tailstock out of the way.

It is a good solid lathe with a 1/3 hp motor that seems to provide adequate
power.

Good luck with your lathe and enjoy it rather than worry whether you have made a
mistake.

Hi Tom
I've had one for a number of years, as you say it is very heavy and precise
for its size. the main thing against it is the low motor power (1/3HP) and
the need for spanners to set the tool rest, tailstock etc. The new version
(sells for about 250UKP in the UK) does have Bristol type ratchet handles.
The manufacturer is Record who is now owned by American Tools.
Its a great little lathe - you should have lots of fun with it.
