Folks, there are now two "World of Woodturner" sites. One is the family
site of WOW, and the other is the MSN site.

We've had an email conversation and both sites appear to have started up
about the same time, unknowingly to the other.

We've decided that the world is a big place with room enough for all of us,
and rather than either of us change our name, we'll cooperate. You now have
two choices.

I signed up several new people today, including the two administrators of
the MSN site. I hope they will post a link to their site on the family of
WOW page.

The more the merrier :)

Herm,
That's beautiful! Too bad all differences can't be settled like this.
While I have your attention, Brian and I noticed Jack Straka is a member
of your WoW group; is that THE Jack Straka?

I believe so, Ruth. Go on the site, email him from there and
ask him.

By the way, you looked pretty good running big Bill's
lathe. Until he explained, I thought you must be pretty darn
tall.

Who's Jack Straka?

Kevin: I believe Jack Straka hails from Hawaii. Sorta a newbie in
woodturning (or why wouldn't he be on our newsgroup?). *G* Here's a little
info on him that I found from an internet search. That Ruth! So easily
impressed! *G*

Jack is one of the turners (artists?) featured in "The Art of Turned
Wood Bowls" by Edward Jacobson and also in Dale Nish's "Master
Woodturners". Maybe one has to be a certain age to know these things!

Incidentally Ruth asked Herm if that is THE Jack Strata on WoW. I can
confirm that it is.

Jack, if you are reading this I hope you are not embarassed by us
talking about you like this!

Thanks Brian and Leif. I'll have to track down some photos of his work. If he
does lurk here, I hope he wasn't offended I hadn't recalled hearing about him
before. On the other hand, he's probably asking "Who's Kevin Miller?" so I
guess we're 'bout even! ;-)

Well... Jack Straka has been a professional woodturner for quite some number of
few years, and though a few people say he is possibly retired from turning, he
still produces some stunning pieces. He was one of the founding members of the
Big Island Woodturners, a club on the Big Island of Hawaii that has a
considerable number of active members, and was a board member until recently,
when (I believe) he decided he wanted a little more privacy... Given the level
of involvement he had with the organization and his willingness to share his
techniques and wisdom, I can only applaud him for his efforts, and if he prefers
to take a little more private life, cannot fault him in any way for his
decision.

I've seen his work, visited his studio, and know he is still producing, though
perhaps not at the volume as a few years ago, and is still known well on the
Hawaiian Islands for his work and for the guidance he provides for other
upcoming turners on the Big Island. His works are displayed across the United
States (and probably beyond, I'd guess) and he is indeed a unique individual
with a great perspective on the turning art (and life), and always willing to
spend time with a neophyte, quick with a kind word but still willing to be
critical (though in a kindly way at times) when it is appropriate, at least
based on the interaction I've had with him and observations of him and others
during Big Island Woodturning meetings.... [how's that for a run on sentence?
My senior english teacher would be rolling in her grave if she knew I actually
sent this...]

And just in case he happens to be monitoring this group: "Hi Jack!"

Thanks
