Hi all,
I can't find anyone who has commented on the relative sanding grit or
micron size of Tripoli and White Diamond. Tormek suggests their white
honing compound is roughtly equivalent to 6500 grit. Lee Valley reports
that their Green Chromium Oxide is .5 micron (about 9000 grit), but
doesn't comment about any of the others. Just curious, particularly
since I recently learned that the 3M pads were much coarser grit than I
usually sand to. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Lyn,

Go find the posting I made a while back on buffing and polishing compounds.
I did not find an absolute size given for any of the compounds, but there is
a list that categorizes them based on abrasive use, going from coarse to
fine. Brown tripoli is one of the coarser compounds, used for cutting back
base metals. White Diamond is in the next finer group of compounds. It
might be worth reading. Fear not, no abusive words ... some even found it
fairly informative.

Don,
Yes, read your helpful and informative post both times it was put up. I just
remain curious as the actual size of the particles. I both use Tripoli and
White Diamnond as part of the Beal system and use Tripoli and Chromium Oxide on
honing disks I use with the Veritas/Lee Valley Power Sharpening System. I'm
wondering just how they compare in size to say 15 and 9 micron 3M sandpaper.

Best regards,
Lyn

Yes, I've been curious about this myself, for example the 15 micron sanding
belts from Lee Valley but I've not been able to find "a chart" per se to see
the comparison when related to the word "grit".
If you find anything, I've been interested.

I have charts in a catalog on grinding and polishing materials. The Grit
Size comparison chart shows that a 15 Micron Equivalent corresponds to an
Industrial Size No. of 600. A second chart on diamond products shows that
25 micron corresponds to an 800 grit. I won't type in the whole chart, but
I will fax it to someone who wants to scan it and post it.

Here is a URL to a chart comparing the various grits. There's a link from this
chart to "polishing compounds" as well:

Wow, what a chart. The very best I've seen. Alas, still no Tripoli (even in their
polishing compound link). But what a great table. Thankyou Jack (and the Steve who
orignially developed it).
