I have a Jet Mini Lathe JML-1014 that the motor capacitor has gone out on.
Jet wants over $30 for it including shipping. It has 25uF 250WVAC on it. 2
inches long and 1 inch in diameter. Does anyone know if this is a starting
capacitor or running capacitor & where I might buy a generic one that will
work. Thanks.

You got it, motor shop or internet. Should be start on a 1/2 horse.

Match capacitance / voltage.

Mike,

I suspect it is a run capacitor. A starting capacitor is switched out
of the circuit once the motor reaches a predetermined speed. This is
accomplished by a centrifugal switch. Often you can hear a click from
the switch when the motor speeds up. Generally it is easier to hear the
switch close when the motor is turned off and is slowing down.

If this cannot be heard it is fairly safe to assume the capacitor is in
the circuit all the time. (This is probably cheaper to manufacture
since it eliminates the centrifugal switch.)

Just match the value, 25 uF and rating, 250WVAC and you should be good
to go. You should be able to find it at a industrial supply house that
handles electrical items.

Hope this helps,

Harry

Any electrical supplier like Grainger or a motor rewind shop. Should run
you less than $15

I would sure look somewhere else. I need bearings for my Jet mini, and
Jet quoted me $38 bucks plus shipping for them. I would have been
looking at something just under $46 for more Chinese bearings.

Got a quote from a local bearing shop for Timken bearings - $20 for
both.

I am thinking that Jet is trying to make a little extra kick on the
"genuine Jet" Chinese parts line.

Go to a motor repair/rewinder/parts store and they will have what you
need.

try your local electronic surplus store - be sure to get an AC rated
motor cap, not a DC rated cap. at that small value (25 uf) you could
get an oil filled cap - it would be bigger, but never fail, get a used
one out of a scrapped transmitter or old electronic mystery box - oil
caps look like a box with two ceramic terminals on one end.

Lathe seems a poor choice for a permanent split capacitor motor, but
realizing that he wrote 25 microfarads makes it likely. Wouldn't provide a
lot of starting torque at all. As a run capacitor, it'll be more expensive.
Read the question, George.

I had this issue on my bandsaw. Took the capacitor off a motor I picked
up for $1 at a garage sale and everything has worked fine for four
months now.

Mike.. how old is the mini?

I had the motor and switch/capacitor changed on mine under warranty... I've
heard that they had a problem with motors for a while in 05...

It is one of the first ones make. I bought it at Atlanta Woodworking Show
the first year they came out.

I think you got your money's worth, then.. *g*

Might be like taking a hamster to the vet... they tell you to just get a new
one.. I paid $225 for my mini and if the motor hadn't been covered by the
warranty, I'd of just bought a new one before I paid them over $130 for a new
one...
