I've done some search, and everyone uses the shorthand, or the
original is buried so deep in the history I cannot find the
distinction made.

I know it's Liquid Dishwashing Detergent.

I've assumed that means "Hand-Dishwashing" since Machine detergents
are so caustic, but wanted to double-check since I believe technically
the hand-washing is "soap" and the machine-washing is a true
"detergent"

Just need clarification before I take the plunge. Thanks.

And you have to buy the Costco house brand, or the LDD Tech Service

Sorry Leo, there is no Costco around my neck of the woods to my knowledge.

No Costco? Impossible, if the LDDTSD knew your address, Jim, we'll have one
installed. I seem to recall a similarly recalcitrant, whiny, woodturner
coming up with such a pathetic excuse. We obtained his address and put in
place two, not one, but two Costcos within approximately 30-40 minutes
driving time. I believe we even gave him driving directions. If you will
give us your address by private correspondence (email preferably) we shall
take care of this deplorable condition. NB: We do not sell addresses of
our clients.

Nearest I can find Leif is in Canada, at the very least three hours away
from where I am. The rest are down closer to NY city, which is several
several hours drive.

Hi, guys. Apparently Dave's aware of Jim's secret location. I have
received an enquiry from Costco about this. Apparently, Corporate Hq would
like to know Jim's address so they can get busy building another store to
cover this hitherto unknown marketing location.

On a personal note, I am aware of areas of the east coast being dens of
iniquity, but BJ's? Are these anywhere near Chappaquiddick or Chappaqua?

Yeah, there are no Costco's close to my location - about 30 miles west of
Rochester NY. We do have BJ's Wholesale club and Sam's Club in Rochester and
Buffalo, and a smaller BJ's in Batavia where I live.
I did buy Joy LDD from BJ's to give this a try. Got a bowl, another that
will be a lampshade (needless to say - this is what you get when you attempt
your first coring and have a busted out hole in the bottom) and a small
hollow form in a vat now. The hollow form should be coming out either
tonight or tomorrow for final turning.

Add Waltham to the list, but they do NOT sell Kirkland brand LDD (or ANY 5 gallon containers of LDD).

I renewed my CostCo membership today, and went to the
home goods isle.

The only CostCo Diswashing Detergent was an Amber-colored
Anti-Bacterial dishwashing Soap.

I has picture in my mind of something like Ivory dishwashing soap
(no dye).

Could you describe the dishwashing soap from Costco?

Thanks,
Mike

My pleasure, Mike! During my affair with Costco's Kirkland brand LDD, it
has come out under two different labels. The first one I bought was a white
label and contained the words: "Kirkland Clout, Ultra Dishwashing Detergent,
Antibacterial Hand Soap. The only difference that I could see between the
two types is in the coloring added. For the first one it contained: FD&C
Yellow #5. The liquid when poured out onto a piece of bare wood was a pale
yellow. The second one had an orange label and contained the words:
"Kirkland Dish Liquid, Antibacterial Hand Soap. The difference in
ingredients seemed again to be the color. This time it was just D&C Orange
No. 4. When poured out on the bare board it was an even paler yellow.

Are you sure the bottle you saw read: anti-bacterial _dishwashing_ soap?
The color of the soap could be described as amber, but that might be due to
the orange colored label.

In any event, that is the one you want. I have only seen them in one gal.

Of course Leif will rise to their defense, but I wonder how long it will
be before we all can agree to disagree about CostCo's high LDD prices,
poor customer relations, slow shipping practices, eternal back orders,
and employees with B.O., halitosis and mismatched socks. Not to mention
all-around nastiness on the phone. This is all supposition. I've never
been in a CostCo store, which makes this a valid rcw posting. Can you
believe it, C.S. doesn't have the courtesy nor the good will to list LDD
in their new catalog. Since they don't sell it, I can't refuse to buy
it. !@#$%^&*, and the everloving ;-).

Hey Folks,

Don't get your shorts in a twist about a particular brand of liquid
dish detergent -- find the cheapest stuff you can, though getting a
clear (uncolored)soap without strong fragrances might be best. My
first soap experience was with Dawn, which is what I had on hand, but
the blue color does affect the color of the wood. I've been soaping
bowls for about 10 months, and I use Octagon, while my dad uses Ivory
Ultra (or some Ivory product). Another good source might be a health
food store, as they buy bulk containers of clear soap without
fragrance, and you might be able to order a 1- or 5-gallon container.
There is a reasonable question about breathing the dust of this stuff,
and my best guess is that the fragrances are going to be the problem
-- I'd still turn on the dust extractor or wear a mask.

The nicest thing about soaping green wood is you can go from live tree
to finished bowl in less than a week, without cracks, if you work with
a species that can tolerate drying in a microwave, and about 2-3 weeks
if you turn pretty thin, and dry slowly in a bag.

WOW! I never thought there'd be so many different problems with Costco - by
the way, I went to my Costco, full of hope and ready to but the magic LDD, only
to arrive home and see I actually had LLD! Same amber color, smells soapy, and
is Kirkland "Ultra". Works so far, updates to follow. I wonder what people are
doing wrong when it doesn't work?? Thanks again, Leif . . .

Well as I had mentioned previously, I pulled the maple vase out of the vat
and finished turned it tonight. It cut like green wood, nice and smooth. The
piece is highly quilted maple, and I didn't experience any tear out what so
ever. I have to say, this is probably one of my nicer pieces I have done,
not to mention thinnest. It's thin enough to see light through it along the
sides, not quite as thin at the neck or foot, but still thinner than any
other piece I have turned and have hold together. Now it's sitting on the
shelf to finish drying before being put in the danish oil. Hope I can oil
this at least. If not someone let me know asap.
Vacuum chucked it to turn the foot - found you can create suds on the inside
as the vac pump is pulling moisture from in the wood.
