Hello....

I have been in Denver for sometime now, and finally moving my wood
lathes from my other home to my home here in Denver. I grew up in
Oregon, spent past 3 yrs in Arizona and have been locally for 6 months
now. I am hoping to bring up some Arizona wood with me (mesquite and
other) but also am looking for wood (large) locally. I was enjoy
learning to make hollow vessels before moving up and have missed
turning. I would like to know what web sites the local wood turners
have and hopefully make some new wood turning friendships up here in
Denver. This Saturday I am flying down to pack my stuff and my wood
working shop. Having to use a lift gate (Ryder trucks are the only
ones available with lift gate to rent) and a palette jack to move the
large lathe (VB36) should be plenty of fun, not to mention all the other
lighter equipment. I should be showing up late Tuesday or Wednesday
next week (april 27-28) to move my stuff into the house here. As while
down there I was open to learning from those who were more exp. than
myself on my lathes and if anyone would like to 'play' once in a while
on them, I may be open for those ideas also. While in Arizona, I
obtained much hardwood from the tree removal companies at a very low low
cost and hopefully will be able to find some good connections here in
Denver metro area. If anyone would like to assist in helping a wood
turner unload the equipment or make a new friend/wood turner please
contact me.

Looking forward to turning again..... I have been having withdrawls
from it......

Thanks and best of days to all!

Steve,

Thanks for the encouragement..... I have two wood lathes, I started out
with a Delta and quickly jumped up to the VB36 when my accident insurance
money came in. I got into wood turning as therapy for of my arms, I only
had lower arm motion available for a couple of months. I had fractured and
dislocated both shoulders (tore rotator cuffs) in a auto accident, thanks to
passenger airbags, but at least I survived :)!!! So I bought the Delta
using turning as therapy. Wood turning turned into more than physical
therapy, soul and personal therapy, great way to relax for hours!!
Anyways, then with some of the $$, I was able to get that Green Monster
(VB36). I have had to adjust the Lathe once thus far, keeping the two oil
holders full. The bearing I had to adjust was the 'thrust' bearing or the
bearing place that maintains the shaft (in/out) not the ones that the shaft
rolls on/in....Not being an engineer, hard to describe. I love the lathe,
allows for many different types of turning, specially hollow vessels of
large size, both in diameter and in height. Works well on smaller ones to
learn also. But I can not even begin to touch this lathes stability, it
just does not move.... Well, sometimes it does, but only when you are way
off balance (the load) and other lathes would be walking all over the
place. The only issue I have had with the lathe is using my smaller wood
lathe's face plates as they have tendency to warp severely with the larger
(heavy) pieces I enjoy starting with on some projects. So I either purchase
more of the VB36 face plates (which are bullet proof) or I have some made
locally when I can find the talent to do that for me. As far as the
bearings running hot, that did happen during the 'break in' period and
ensuring the oil is full certainly helps to keep everything cool.

If you have other questions and would like to know more, please ask
away.....

Thanks again!

Your in luck, there are three AAW chapters here on the front range, one in
denver, one in the springs and one in ft. collins. Drop me a note when you get
into town and I'll hook you right up. Turning is alive and well out here in
Colorado though we fight over good woods from the coasts and midwest! We have
lots os Aspen.
