Greetings... This question has been posted in the past but as far as
I can tell no one got a definite answer except that Lee Valley used to
sell the item. Will any person willing to help please tell me - and
others - where one might look to buy a good old "peugeot" pepper mill
grinding mechanism in the USA or Canada? Any assistance would
certainly be appreciated. Thank you.

An earlier post stated that Peugeot now only makes mechanisms for their own
pepper grinders .

Do you happen to have a store called "Winners" in your area? They are
kind of a high end discount store.
I have purchased a number of Peugeot complete peppers mills at Winners
for less money than many places want for ROC made mechanisms.

Hi -

We'd still sell 'em too - if Peugeot would sell the mechanisms....

It appears that the pepper grinder manufacturers were worried about being
put out business by a few thousand hand turned mills per year, and put
pressure on Peugeot - who folded....

Cheers,

Rob

Why not buy a low-end Peugot pepper grinder and remove the mechanism?
The cheap ones have the same mechanism as the fancier ones...

With all due respect, why not contact http://www.peppergun.com. Tom David
is the manufacturer (American) of the Unicorn peppermills which have the
best and highest volume peppermil mechnisms in the industry. He may not
sell you mechanisms but you could always dismantle a Unicorn to get one.
The result would outperform a Peugeot very noticeably. How do I know? I
sell both brands. I use Unicorns every day in my own kitchen. Wouldn't
have anything else. Take care.

This is a bit off the topic, but has anyone tried to buy a good pepper
grinder lately. Most of the grinders on the market are junk, except for
those made by Peugeot and a couple of other companies. A company by the
name of Banton in Maine makes a good grinder. Either of these grinders in a
decent size will run well over $50. I don't know if they sell the mechanism
separately or not. They might be worth a call.

Obviously I can't do a good search or I would have noticed earlier, as
some already know, that an answer was already given nearly one year
ago. I'm sort of glad though that I didn't see it because I've gotten
some good ideas to ponder over from the responses. There are lots of
nice and helpful people out there. Thank you all.

I'm sure there are lots more but here are some suppliers I found while
searching as well as some pointed out by others:

Lee Valley
Axminister (UK)
Poolewood (UK)
Klockit
Rockler
Woodcraft
Penn State Industries
Woodworker's Supply
Craft Suppliers USA
Chef Specialties Company (I'm leaning toward here at this time... I
think I may order one just to see if it's the exact thing Lee Valley
sells)

Sincerely,
R. Smith

Norman,

I asked this question of Lee Valley, from whom I used to buy Peugeot
pepper
mill mechanisms. The following is Lee Valley's answer:

"Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately Peugeot no longer sells
their
components separately to anyone and we have finally run out of stock
on all
sizes.

We got the pepper mill hardware directly from the manufacturer a
number of
years ago and they have since changed their policy and will no longer
sell
the hardware individually. They do not have any
distributors/retailers of
this hardware anywhere in North America, or anywhere else as far as we
have
discovered.

In August I spoke by telephone with the North American distributor for
Peugeot pepper mills and they told me that the hardware is not
available
anywhere and that Peugeot is only selling completed pepper mills, and
that
they will not even sell completed pepper mills other than through the
distributor.

Pepper mill mechanisms are available from the following companies, but
none
are made by Peugeot:

We trust this answers your question and we look forward to hearing
from you
again.

I hope this covers your question,

sorry, i don't have an answer to the question
i saw a peugeot in a cooking catalog many many moons ago
i once described the stainless cylinder to my financee
while in germany a couple of years ago, she found me a s&p set
it's by far the coolest looking peppermill i've ever seen
however, it doesn't grind the pepper as course i like
now if i can talk her in to picking me up a solid stainless rolling pin

www.woodturnerscatalog.com carries them as well. I just ordered some to
see if they are decent or not... Hope I didn't buy a lemon-pepper mill...

Is anyone certain that the distributors recommended in the previous note are
actually distributing Peugeot mechanisms? I checked them all and without
question they sell a mechanism but it's questionable whether or not it
Peugeot brand. As with most items I turn, if I'm going to invest the time to
make it I want the best possible components. I've seen too many pepper mills
that are junk. Peugeot makes one of the best mechanisms available. If anyone
has a source that sells Peugeot brand mechanisms I would certainly
appreciate the info.

Peugeot peppermills are French, aren't they? Haven't you been reading
the threads here? You are not allowed to buy anything from France
anymore. It's un-American.

I'm kinda curious as to what makes the Peugeot mills so special. I've
made a number of mills using the ones Craft Supplies sells ("Mr.
Dudley") and they seem to work fine. The latest Packard catalog had
those also (at least they looked the same) and another style, more
expensive, that looked similar to the ones sold by Lee Valley. I'll
probably order a few to see what they're like.
