Anybody out there know where I can look at or talk to someone about a CNC
woodworking lathe. Maybe someone knows of a newsgroup. We are looking for
a lathe with live tooling. I've never ever seen a lathe with live tooling
so I don't know exactly how they work. The machine shop I used to work for
had 5 Okumas & a Mori-Seki ZL-45, these are the only lathes(CNC wise) I've
ever dealt
with. We need a lathe that can handle stock up to 96" x 12" dia. It must
be able to "turn to profile", rope, flute, groove, bore, & machine pockets
in the profile. Poster bed post is what I have in mind. The way we do em
now is take pre-turned stock, chuck them in a ratchet mechanism attached to
a CNC router bed and manually index them between cuts. Of course this is
slow
and we can't rope. It's also a pain in the rear to set the stops on the
ratchets to get your rotation angles correct. In my mind I see a lathe with
a 4-axis router head with tool changer, where the top turret would normally
be. Any infro would be greatly appreciated.

Travis,

Check out Hapfo lathes at http://www.ersystech.com/
They are imported by E & R System Technik, Inc.of Springfield, MA.
They make industrial strength lathes including three CNC versions.
Good luck.
