While in Melbourne (Australia) last week, I saw a spinning wheel of a
make that I'd not heard before - Tarra, made in Gippsland, Victoria.
Apparently they have several models in their range, and I was told that
they are beautifully made and engineered. (The guy in the shop commented
that Ashords are the Holdens (family car) of spinning wheels, but Tarra
is the Rolls Royce)

Has anyone heard of these wheels? Are they good? I have the address, and
will write and ask for more information, but would be good to have some
feedback from anyone who may have used one.

Thanks,

Bronwyn

I am akso looking for a new spinning wheel to replace my old Ashford.
Could you post this address please.

It may be a bad omen though, because every time I see a lovely wheel
and ask the makers name, I'm told that he has "passed away".

I'd still like the address!

I'll post this to the list in case others are interested as well as
e-mailing it.

The address I have is:

Tarra Spinning Wheels
Tarra Wood Products
PO Box 46
Yarram, Victoria, 3971
AUSTRALIA

PHONE: (051) 82 5325

According to the photocopied leaflet I saw, they make a number of
wheels, including the Carousel DeLuxe (upright), the classic (similar in
shape, style to the Ashford Elizabeth), and the Beverley, Benji, & Twin
Treadles.

I know nothing else about them - except that the Classic I saw looked
beautiful (except for the metal flyer arms), and treadled well - I
didn't actually try spinning on it. I haven't contacted them for info
yet.

Regards,

Bronwyn

Yes Tarra wheels are great. Also Sheridan was a great wheel. These makers have finished production but I believe places like Wonderflex in Malvern (Melbourne) have bobbins to fit. Everyone learned on an Ashford but who would use a spinning wheel with Scotch tension when these used wheels are still available on EBay or from another spinner at your local craft group. Good luck with your purchase if it’s still unsold. Be quick as they are sought after. Margie

Yes, I have a Tarra spinning wheel... its the carousel style which is much easier to spin than a big wheel. I bought it brand new and have not done much spinning lately and its for sale. Regards Marsha Babington
