You know... I'm not used to the snow being deeper here than there...
*and* I'm finding I'm *really* missing my dad's snowblower... *really*
missing it... DH came home from work on Friday with a fever... so guess
who's been attempting to keep the driveway clear.... and hasn't managed
to get the whole thing cleared yet (keep re-clearing once done parts
then starting on the areas that I haven't managed to get to yet till I
tire out or really need a drink... still dehydrated from the day... and
cold from that plowing around the house to the exchanger 2 hours ago).
Snow emergency's been called... only emergency vehicles permitted on any
state roads in Maryland now.
I used to like snow... I haven't even minded all the shovelling this
year... until the 3rd time out today (5 times, 45-60 minutes each
time... wanted to do one more pre-bedtime, but just can't make my arms
agree with that idea....)
*G* My son was complaining that I wasn't doing anything with them
today... and that it took a long time for me to start lunch (and dinner)
because I was trying to warm up (*g* both kids helped with that,
snuggling under the blankets with me to help me warm up my legs). I
told him that I just couldn't come up with a faster better way to do it,
and that the piles were high enough by the 4 o'clock shoveling that he
really couldn't help me much anymore because they're as tall as he is.
*g* When I told him that the only other thing I could think of was some
magic spell... and that not only wasn't I Hermoine Granger, but that I
don't have a wand, we got silly and started to try to figure out how she
might clear the drive. After much debating, and deciding that she'd
think that the snow would be good for the ground, so we wouldn't want to
make it disappear or some such, we decided that she'd levitate it in
chunks, move it over the grass and let it fall... at which point he and
his sister started waving their hands and practicing Wingardia Leviosa
(or however it's spelled)... and giggling some more.

We're expecting to get hit here in Massachusetts tomorrow and into
Tuesday :) There are advantages to living in an apartment building -
namely that someone else gets to do the shoveling <evil grin>.
I had planned on laundry tomorrow, but I may just have to stay indoors
and knit - what a shame, eh?
Robbyn (haven't seen snow like this since I was a kid...)
Hey Robbyn,
Where in MA? I grew up done that way.
NH WAS supposed to escape this, but now are expecting 9-15 inches.
Waaaa, waaaa, I am tired of winter.

I hope that everyone else affected by this huge amount of snow is able
to stay safe.

Hi:
The snow started here in Brockton, MA about 8:00 a.m. Monday. Wasn't suppose
to start until this afternoon. In three hours, we already have 4 inches. We
drove down to the kennels about 20 miles away and it was near whiteout
conditions. I don't plan on going out again unless necessary. We are supposed
to get up to 16 inches. The dogs will love it, especially the oldest one. We
will have to drag him and his two daughters out of the snow. The other father
and daughter team will play for a while and then come in to warm up. They see
no reason to freeze when there is a nice warm pellet stove to lay in front of.
Lee
He said it looked like near blizzard outside the building where he works and
said, like you, that it wasn't supposed to start yet and it looked like it
was going to be much worse than they had originally forecast.
He was going to periodically reassess the situation during the day. He
parks and rides the T, so he will be able at least to get to his car.
I hope everyone snowed in has a good experience with it and lots of yarn.

Hi:
My husband supervises the management of numerous buildings in Boston. Today is
a day off because of the holiday but he is in contact with the buildings to
make sure they are taking care of the snow situation.
These snow days are tough on the maintenance crew just finding a place to pile
the snow because of the narrow streets in Boston. They sometimes have to hire
trucks to haul the snow out of Boston when they run out of places to put it!

We just assumed that this happened occasionally until we saw the "natives"

That's not all that far from me, but mid-fanny was only the drifts here. We

Haven't heard whether that's been lifted or not, but the only traffic I've

Sunday DH and I dug the front walk to the fence. Today we took turns and
got one car cleared but not both. The road is still covered, though the
4WD truck that has been going up and down has made ruts that look about a
foot deep. I think I heard a plow truck once on Saturday night, maybe
that made the difference. It didn't snow again today (Monday) but I have

We're about due north of DC. Ours was on top of what was left from the 7 we

enough! We got another inch last night -- still snowing when I woke up!

A small private plow made a wandering path down our street, so we should be
able to get out this afternoon. Just finished clearing the end of the
driveway out to meet the cut it made. Of course he was wandering close to
the other side of the street when he went by us. Murphy's law!
>Every year I think "maybe we should get a snowblower" and then I don't...
>This year for sure!
Amen. We'll be watching the end-of-season sales if they have any left, and
the pre-season sales if they don't. The big trick will be making room in
the garage for it. The one family on our block that has one is apparently
out of town for the duration. Murphy's law, again.
>I sure hope they lift it by Wednesday, and get the plows over here!

Hiya Joyce :)
Robbyn (waving her Chinchilla scarf-laden needles in Joyce's

Aha! Now we just have to train the kids to anticipate a snow day,
and those storms will just go out to sea.
It's Wednesday after five pm, there has been no sign of any plow truck,
and our cars are dug out but people keep getting stuck on the road. Not
that it's impassable, but you have to know how to drive on snow, and most
people here don't. Most of the people here don't own snow shovels, I
think; the ones that do only own one. I saw a man with a pickup truck
bring about six shovels and hand them out to his neighbors; I wonder
whether he borrowed them from work? According to the newspaper,
everything shovel shaped, including coal scoops, is sold out, at the
hardware store. My friend who was supposed to be on the train has pulled
her back shoveling and won't be traveling after all.

You know, I *sort of* understand selling off the last of the winter
clothes way before the end (time to get rid of the overstock), and
switching to spring in January... but this actual stocking of *summer*

Worked out well for my dad in '79 though. He bought an snow shovel at one
of those end-of-season sales, right before that year's big President's day
storm. Anyway, I won't smirk too hard at the folk who have to go out and
buy shovels during storms, now. We managed to break one this time. Luckily
we had 2 others and the electric thing.
So... when they go on sale again in the fall I've got to pick up a new
one. Meanwhile I can still use the shovel, but it wobbles a lot, which
can make picking up and throwing even more of a challenge than usual.
No school again for Howard County on Friday... haven't got all the lots
cleared, and the pathways (and sidewalks for that matter) that many kids
use to get to school haven't even been attempted yet for the most
part... so it's been judged unsafe for the kids to get to school (even
for the bussers since many would have to wait (and walk) in the streets
for the busses).
Thank goodness the library and the mall are open today... library for
books, kids finished them a while ago, and mall so we can get some real
walking in (in a sneaky way... I'm purposly misplanning the couple of
stores I'd like to hit... and offering the kids dessert from the gelato
place that's on the *far* end of the mall away from the food court where
we're going to get chinese.... I'm also tired of sandwiches or cooking
right now.
*g* Much better than my first trip out since Saturday... yesterday to
the doctor's and Giant (for bread and a perscription) for DD's ear
infection... first in over a year.
And the best thing is that because I haven't had to shovel since
yesterday morning, my arms don't hurt... so I can finish off the scarf I
wanted to finish this weekend (and couldn't)... and (hopefully) finish
off the little embroidery project that I wanted to have done by this
weekend as well!
-Liz (who? Me? Cabin fever?)
We have one of those wobbly ones, too. DH uses the "ergonomic" one with
the specially bent handle, which does help a bit. But my favorite one is
my kiddie shovel, because I find I can move just as much snow in lots of
little shovelfuls without getting as tired as I do when trying to lift
huge heavy shovelfuls.

We may be able to repair ours. It's one of those ergonomic ones and Eric
likes it. I like the compromise one; bent handle but a nice slick, black,
metal, flat blade, not a big plastic scoop. It holds less, but I can't lift
a full one anyway and a little silicon spray keeps it non-stick for days.

We don't have sidewalks in our neighborhood, but the one along the main
road is buried, even though it was across a ditch from the roadway.

We hope to get out to Wheaton tomorrow, since Eric doesn't have any
patients scheduled. We had planned to go to She-Va-Con, but his car needs
work and mine is too puny for a long trip. So no patients on the book and
an unexpected free Friday. For us that means lunch at Woomi Garden. It's a
Korean restaurant that puts on a very nice lunch buffet on week days. Hope
to hit a new-to-us used book store near there as well.
This morning I shoveled out the notch between the drive and the mail box,
rather than just the path to the box we had already done. My back has been
complaining ever since. Phooey. Must have been the last straw. But at least
we have a place to put the trash can now.

I've been knitting the back to a vest. Teach me to do the backs first or
get lazy and do them on the machine. So boring, but being sideways garter
it can't be done on the machine. Oh well, half done and then I get to do
the bands and think about something more interesting for the next project
than completing a UFO. Need to alternate, right?
My nephew who lives in Germantown said he never thought about buying a snow
shovel so had to use the Rubbermaid cover off his recycling container.

I think it's crazy too, no winter clothes here either, only short sleeve shirts
and tops. I asked once and they said, well people are heading to Florida and

Nora
Right. The folks shopping at Walmart and Kmart are just pining for new
clothes to take to Florida. Right.
Well, of course they are! Either that or they want to keep their

Did you enjoy all that lovely snow while you were in CT? If not come back this

ALL the winter and spring merchandise was long gone at that store. The
clearance sale stuff was spring things! I guess it's a sign of age, but I
hate to see the year being rushed along like this.
I don't think that it is a sign of age. I like being able to get
winter things in February. I don't know about the rest of the
world, but it is definitely still winter here in February - and
March, and probably April, and sometimes May. LOL
Katherine
Went to the grocery store today and lo and behold they had bunches of daffodils
already and they were beautiful. I left them there as if I bought any they
wouldn't last long so I'll make sure I go to that store every week just to
smell the flowers.
Nora
Well, I tell you, today I went over to Walmart and didn't even go near the
clothes, though I would have liked to find some new winter driving gloves.
I was in the yarn aisle, oddly enough, when I heard an announcement to the
effect that a new shipment of waterproof boots had just come in on the
truck and were on their way to the shelf. I took my time but it looked like
I was the first to get there; a full shelf! My fabric snow boots having
leaked way too much, slopping through the slush the other day, and the
stretchy over-boots being too short even before tearing off a chunk at the
top yesterday, I was in hog heaven finding a nice fit in knock-off Wellies.
Just roomy enough to wear with hand-made wool socks! SO nice to find
something actually suitable to the weather, for a change!
You did well, Helen! I generally purchase out of season - for a whole

I felt really lucky, finding them so soon after the other boots showed they

Looks like we'll need them again this week. Ugh. Where is Spring??
BTW, though I did wander the yarn aisle, I didn't get tempted. I suppose I

Not looking forward to any more snow. I honestly don't mind shovelling
3 inches or less... actually enjoy it, more or less... even 6 isn't so
bad if it doesn't appear suddenly overnight, but gives me time to keep

I know just what you mean. I got a little knitting done last night, but not
much. Still stiff. Of course my jaw was sore from the dental work. Turns
out they had to do some serious work to prepare for the new crown, not just
pop off the temporary and take an impression. Took me by surprise I can
tell you. Still, I'm glad that was yesterday and over with before the snow.
Somehow I don't think I'll be out gallivanting today. Shoveling maybe, but
not gallivanting.
Eric just walked in again. In the half hour since he left he only got one
stoplight down 29, so he turned around and came home.
Sure hope your weather improves. I've had it with our 98 inches of snow this
year.
Nora
Now, I hope your snow goes out to sea and not up here again. Did you ladies
see that Mirjam is getting snow, the worst in over 50 years? It was in our
paper this morning.
Nora
So... Mirjam, are you happy to see the snow, or disappointed we didn't
keep it all (though it does seem like we tried to!)?
-Liz
And yeah... it's noonish, and we've already had more snow than predicted
was going to snow through midnight today... and this was just the first
batch stalling over the area (Helen, this is one storm you should be
happy that you're further north for... VA's going to be hit harder,
supposedly).
Here's hoping the second blast goes roaring by with barely a wave...
unlike this one... as long as it doesn't change to ice, I'll just mumble
a few grumbles, rather than curses...
Back out to shovel the driveway so the car won't pack it all down...
-Liz
I saw it on the news this morning. Very strange. She did say she wanted
some, now didn't she? Shows you have to be careful what you ask for!
Looks like the forecast here is for snow, snow, snow. We have very fine,
light snow all day that didn't amount to much more than an inch but it's
still going and they say it will keep up all night and all day tomorrow
and...
ENOUGH ALREADY!
Saw robins again today, on a different holly tree. Wonder what makes them
decide to feast on a different one each day. Not that the mocking bird was
making it easy for them to get at this one. He thinks it's his private
property. Saw 2 red wing black birds picking up spilled seed under a
feeder. I sure don't often see them in the yard. Mostly it's blue jays,
cardinals, juncos, starlings, finches and assorted song sparrows.

I had to laugh about those early dismissals. They ended up sending the kids
home at the peak of the snow and of course it had slackened considerably by
normal dismissal time.

Map I saw had us in the thick of it, but without the sleet that they're
going to get further south. Better snow than sleet or freezing rain!
>Back out to shovel the driveway so the car won't pack it all down...
Grin. Did that, too, just before Eric got home. No knitting today, but I
did play with my lucet for a bit. Decided I needed some warm reading so my
current read is Dangerous By Nature by Manning Coles, set in steamy,
non-air-condtioned, post-war Central America.
Wow! Mirjam got snow! That is amazing. Just what she needs right now.
Poor you, Mirjam!
Katherine
Yepper! But it was not from Labrador. LOL

Manning Coles is good, but I think that's one of their weaker books.

True, it did let up more... but by the regular home time for my son, the
roads were *just* starting to get a bit icier (about 4)... not really
icing yet, but slicker. The salt distributor wasn't working on my
section of street... not sure if they were running out and hadn't
noticed, or what (first block and two side streets off of it looked
great... mine you could see where the drips and drabs of salt went)
> No knitting today, but I did play with my lucet for a bit.
One of these days I'm actually going to get or make myself an
old-fashioed lucet... right now I end up doing the same thing over
forefinger and thumb, and while it works, there's a limit to the amount
of friction those fingers can take :-) (I swear it's a bit faster than
with the fixed lucet though... and even more portable, which is probably
why I keep putting it off)
And of course, after my evening activities were cancelled (gym classes
for the kids, and a dinner out with a group of friends from the SCA), we
got all of... well, let's put it this way... it's 1 am (yes, going to
bed shortly) and I can still see the driveway through the powder of snow
that has fallen since I shoveled it at 6:15 pm.
Off to bed... wondering what weather and schedule tomorrow will bring
(this will be the 4th Thursday in a row that DD has to miss her swim
time if they close schools and therefore the gym's classes... just
happened to have meetings, an ear infection, and something else...
weather once? that many weeks in a row so far).
-Liz
What I saw on TV was rather great to watch, certainly much better than all
the war fare going on. People were having a great time in the snow,
making snowmen and throwing snowballs and above all everyone was
laughing. Maybe when you get snow once in w while, it is a treat......Now
katherine what can we send you for a weather treat......
Els

Actually, if you are going to send me a weather treat, it might as well be
to keep it cold. If it warms up, we get snow, and I'd just as soon not
get any more. It is already ridiculous, the amount we have. <g>
Katherine
As I'm nearing the end, I'd have to agree with you, even though this is
only the 4th one I've read and I'm not reading them in any order other than
the order in which I manage to find copies. Even with its weaknesses, it's
a decent read but definitely not up to the level of _A Toast to Tomorrow_
or _The Fifth Man_.

They never got to our street, but the bus doesn't come down it.
4 is a late home time!

Not to mention that you can't pull the stitch as snug when doing it on
fingers. My first attempt at lucet work was on a 2-pronged salad fork.
Worked ok, but I didn't know about pulling the stitch tight, then.

And the case is similar this morning, but the threats are still in the
forecast.

Thursday is our recycling pick-up day. DH was optimistic and put the bin
out this morning, but I'll be very surprised if they come.
Now is the time to make a lot of snowballs and keep them in the freezer for
just the right moment! When the heat comes this summer, just pull some out
of the freezer and have a grand snowball fight!
Stay safe and off the roads until the snow melts!

Still working on even tension for yarn, but string's pretty easy now :-)
Oh... and they just announced that Friday is *another* snow day for HoCo
Schools.. Yes, that's #10.... 5 planned, 5 to figure out... of which I
believe a max. of 2 might be forgiven....
-Liz
Helen and others, did you get all the snow that was forecast last night? Going
to email my nephew and ask if he wants me to send him a shovel as he doesn't
have one yet. LOL
Nora
We got a few inches, but they sent a plow around at least once and it was
easy to clear both cars.
>Going to email my nephew and ask if he wants me to send him a shovel as

While you're at it, email me somebody to do the shoveling too. :-)

Really, the stores are sold out. Yes, we got more snow last night but
nowhere near as much as they threatened us with.
Of course, now they're threatening us with rain again this weekend. Ugh.
Actually, they're threatening us with a "wintery mix" this weekend
now... though with the temperatures they're predicting, it'll probably
just be rain. *And* near the end of the 10-day forecast... so late next
week/next weekend.
*g* Just when I was forgetting how much I disliked the many grey days of
the Northwest... at least the sky wasn't usually a straight, boring grey
there...
-Liz (who has Mango Lassi all over patches of snow along the driveway,
and on the driveway... where DH dropped *three* large drink cups last
night.. looks like the dog went wild... or something...)

Indeed. Things were clear on the main roads before the end of rush hour.
Costco was a mad house in the afternoon; absolutely mobbed with refugees
from cabin fever. Not one jug of 2% milk left in the place.

If only it will hold off until the snow has more chance to sublimate.

We sure do get an even blanket of gray this time of year.
I have concluded that if March has come in like a lion, it is Kimba.
(Showing my age, there)

Oh yum, where did you buy that? I love mango. Only had Mango Lassi once,
though. I like the Dafruta mango concentrate they sell in the ethnic stores
and the ethnic aisle at Shopper's. You sweeten it yourself, so you control
the amount. Haven't tried using Splenda in it yet, but I will.

Still sounds painful to me! ;)

Ah, but a much easier snow to deal with this time. We even got a real snow
plow down our street this time. Came at 1 pm, widening the plowed area very
nicely. I dug out the end of the driveway right away so the salty snow pile
wouldn't harden and finished by 1:20. The snow plow came again at 1:30.
Classic!
Finished the back of that sideways-knit vest and started the ribbing on an
arm hole. Thought about seed stitch and even did a couple of rounds but
didn't like the look of it against the texture of the body after all, so I
raveled back and started over in 2/2 rib. Much nicer.

Oh, now I have to try to make some! I typed "mango lassi recipe" into Yahoo
and it came up with lots of variations, even a Vegan one using soy yogurt.
I think I'll stick to real yogurt, even though I don't have a drop of it in
the house. Hmm. I bet I could even use the Yoplait Sabor Latino Mango
Yogurt they have at Shopper's.
I did notice that the Vegan version used a little rose water. Interesting.
*g* The things I've learned about the area since I joined the SCA...

I like it in Turkish Delight, but it never occurred to me to put it with
Mango. ;) Yes, definitely only food- grade!
Let me know which one you liked best. I have a good recipe in one of my
Indian cook books, which I could share if you want.
