I have just got back into knitting and was hoping to find out what ply
patons capston wool is
or an equivalent yarn to use. Can anyone help.

Thanks
Karen

Anything that knits at the gauge called for in the pattern can be
substituted. The one reference I found with Google was to "Patons Capstan
Aran sweaters", implying that the yarn is an Aran weight.

Thank you DA and Slinky Toy for your responses. Although I am still unsure
if Patons Capstan equates to e.g.
Double knitting yarn or Triple knitting yarn

Thanks anyway for trying to sort me out

My book says it knits 19 sts to 4 inches on a 5mm (US 8) which puts it right
between an aran (18 sts to 4 inches) and a worsted weight (20 sts to 4 inches).
A sports weight knits 24 sts to 4 inches.

Roger.

Roger, could there be two yarns with the same name? Would Patons have used
the name before for a different weight wool?
The information that I have lists Canadiana as knitting at the suggested
tension you mentioned.
The reason for my concern is I have used the same source for yarn
information 10 years or so, and have not found an error in their
information. I never use the yarn the pattern calls for, and totally depend
on this source for substations.
Thanks,
DA

I checked three different sources. All said it was 100% wool, knits 19 sts to 4
inches.
Roger.
