Hello Folks!

Has anyone out there ever used silk ribbon embroidery on clothing? I'm
wondering how it stands up to machine washing/drying and general wear and
tear.

Do all the colors need to be pre-washed? Is there any tips for anchoring
the ribbon that will make it more durable? Fabric glue?

Any information/suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Marianne in Arbuckle

I've used silk-ribbon on clothing, and the best advice I could ever give
would be to use it on a project that is easily handwashable or
drycleanable, and one that although would be worn, wouldn't be worn/washed
enough to destroy it (like the way I treat my t-shirts <G>).
Prewash the ribbon. This is a must. Prewash the fabric for the garment.
Make sure any and all dyes used will NOT run by re-fixing the dye
(vinegar, salt, synaprol(?)...there was a thread on this just recently).
Use a GOOD stabilizer that will hold up to repeated washings. You may even
would use interfacing as a stabilizer, although that's pretty hard to sew
through. Go ahead and stitch your piece as you regularly would, and then
as an added measure, I'd glue the ends down with an all-purpose fabric
glue (Aleene's Ok To Wash It is what I use) that's been watered down a bit
so it's not stiff...
I've had good luck doing this.

I have found that substituting polyester souble face satin ribbon in the
proper widths is the answer to putting ribbon embroidery on clothing that
will be machine washed and dried. I have several outfits that I made and
embellished in this way and they were washed/dried many times last summer
and still look very nice. Also got lots of compliments and close looks to
see how I did it. I just used the regular silk ribbon embroidery
transfers, I only prewashed darker color ribbons as the lighter ones never
ran or for that matter have the darker ones..
Hope this helps, Alice

I have made one silk ribbon crazy patch dress for my daughter and I made
it last summer. I have washed it probanly 20 times and steam ironed it
everytime. It has held up great and has not faded or bled on the fabric
but I have to say that I put it on brightly coloed fabric and it was not
on white.
I took a class on sil ribbon embroidery at Martha's Pullens and they
showed many things done on clothes. Their only suggestion was to oick
stitches and flowers that are sewn CLOSE to the fabric (ex. the spider web
rose) insyead of fluffy flowers like the hand wrapped roses. This is only
common sense though.
I would certainly do another clothing item again.

I have used silk ribbon on clothing. It is usually reccommened that it be hand washed, but I carefully machine wash it. Choose your stitches carefully (don't use any that are too "loopy" and
difficult to anchor) and then you can also tack tails and the stitches on the back side to further anchor them. I even do this for the spider web rose so that if a "petal" is accidently pulled it
won't distort the whole rose. Sometimes it will be noted on the package if a color needs to be checked for colorfastness. You can simply put it in a cup of warm water and then blot it on white
paper towel to do this. I definitely would do this with dark colors and especially reds

Thanks so much for your input regarding ribbon embroidery. I was
wondering the same thing as my daughter gave me a picture from Spiegel
catalog of a flannel shirt with ribbon embroidery on it. I want to
copy the shirt and now my questions are answered. Thanks. patti-v

Hi,

I had some red silk ribbon and I put it in warm water to check for
colorfastness (which it wasn't) but when I soaked it in vinegar and water,
it was! I use vinegar and water for most dark things that I think might
'bleed' especially when I will be using it with a lighter colored fabric.

What and where is the Quiltropolis page? An address would help for
