Hi...

Just wondering if anyone knows of references of costume/fashion
history books, specifically with patterns...

Any help would be *much* appreciated...

Hi Luana,

I've never ordered these books but they might help you:

Patterns of Fashion by Janet Arnold
Volume 1, 1660-1860
Volume 2, 1860-1940
Volume 3, 1560-1620
Description says they have line drawing illustrations and fully graphed
patterns that can be enlarged to desired size. Only Volume 3 specifically
says men and women. The rest may just be for women. I can't tell.

Period Costumes for Stage and Screen
Volume 1, 1500-1800
Volume 2, 1800-1909
Description says specifically for women, hardcover, with historically
accurate patterns drawn to scale, and step-by-step instructions.

The info came from The Elegant Needle, 8747 Bronson Drive, Roseville, CA
95746, USA/ phone (916) 791-5421. Hope everything's still accurate.

In addition to posting here, in the textiles newsgroup, you might try the
Historic Costume Mailing List. Here's the info on that list:

Historic costumers with Internet access now have a place to discuss that
interest on-line, with the creation of the Historic Costume Mailing List.

This new electronic mailing list focuses on the recreation of period
costume, from the Bronze age to the mid-20th Century. Its emphasis is on
accurate historical reproduction of clothing, historical techniques for
garment construction, and the application of those techniques in modern
clothing design. Other topics frequently discussed include adapting
historical clothing for the modern figure, clothing evolution, theatrical
costumes, patterns, materials, books, and sources for supplies.

We currently have just over 300 members, of varying levels of ability,
education and interest. Members include re-creationists and reenactors of
all eras, historians, museum personnel, students and professors of both
theatre and history, and other academics, authors, directors, dancers,
professional costumers, wearable artists, sewers interested in learning
"lost" techniques, and some who are simply "fans" of history. This is a
list that brings together many different types of people, all of whom can
learn from one another and all of whom have something useful to give.
It's rewarding and refreshing to find them all congregating together,
trading information in a serious manner, sharing hints and tips and
sometimes just hanging out and having fun.

To join the discussion, send electronic mail to
h-costum...@andrew.cmu.edu asking to be added to the list. A digest
format is available upon request.
