Wanted: information regarding reed pleating device ( which gathers up a
piece of cloth and pleats it to allow easier hand-smocking ) !

I was told by a friend of mine that the company that made it is located
in Arizona. It consists of two long metal cylinders with jaws to gather
up the cloth, a (wooden?) table and it is hand-operated.

If anyone has any info about such a machine please contact Peggy at

CLotilde catalog has a mechanical pleater that I think may be what you
had in mind. It has two cylinders and pleats the fabric up using
needles. Clotilde's number is 1-800-772-2891 TheSpring catalog lists
it for $200.

I'm not a smocker and have never used this device but I hope this
helps.

I don't know if you are talking about the pleating devices with needles
or something else. Any wayy the neele machines (hand) are available
from Clothilde, Martha Pullen, Linda's Silver needle in Chicagoland and
a loth of other shops--check on heirloom sewing?? IS THERE A different
MACHINE??

Peggy,
I was surprisedto see something related to smocking! A pleater is a
table top hand operated life saver that gathers the fabric in the
form of pleats (tiny) so you could smock on them. The fabric is wound
on a wooden dowel and then placed at the needles and turned through
with a wheel. On this wheel there are 24 special needles that are
threaded with quilting thread. You can pleat any number of rows that
you like up to 24. I have a Sally Stanley pleater. There are several
kinds on the market, one of which is a Reed. I think they are all the
same. Do you smock? If you need help locating one I could help. They
are pricey, about $100., but well worth it if you are a serious
smocker. Some gals choose to still pull up the gathers with iron on
dot transfers. Not Me!!
Until we smock again,
Mari

Peggy,

I assume that you are interested in purchasing a smocking pleater. If so, you
should call Linda's Silver Needle at 1-800-SMOCKIT. If you already own this
pleater and you want instructions for operation, I believe they can point you
in the right direction. Good Luck.
