Has anyone but me noticed the poor quality of Gutermann thread lately? I
have a Viking 400 that has never seen anything but Gutermann thread. I kept
having problems with my tension and took it in to get it checked out. Guess
what? I had a big ball of lint in my tension guides from the thread.

After investigation I found it was from thread Gutermann had made in
Mexico. I got on the Net and used Alta Vista to search for a website and
found it. Trust me, at this point I was not a happy camper!! I immediately
mailed them "snail mail" (they don't have a link to send correspondence via
E-mail).

Within 3 days of mailing Gutermann called me about my complaint. ABSOLUTELY
AMAZING IN TODAY'S WORLD!!!!! They told me they realized they had a
problem, would send UPS TO MY DOOR AT NO COST, pick up the thread and
replace it! WHAT A CLASS ACT! I was ready to abandon Gutermann. Now, again,
I am an avid fan!

If you have had problems with Guttermann thread breakage, check out the
spool. What I have found is that the spool itself will be marked "Made in
Germany", this has always been top quality, if it is not marked, then it is
made in Mexico (the sticker on the end of unused spools will say "Made in
Mexico"). I have found the Mexican thread to be start out good, get bad,
then back to good. It's a who knows type thread. I've had whole spools I've
completely tossed and at their prices IT SHOULD ALWAYS BE THE BEST!!!!!

Gutermann asured me that all thread will be made in Germany again.

One other good thing came out of this that was quite surprising. I found a
MUCH, MUCH, MUCH, better thread that is cheaper. It is called "Aerofil
Madeira". At first I thought it was an incredible rip-off due to how small
the spool looked. At first glance I figured it to be a 100 m spool @ 2.65,
but luckily I deal with a SUPER Viking dealer in OH, (it's called "Carousel
Sewing" in North Canton) and she showed me it is 400 m., that is 1/2 the
cost of Gutermann. You cannot see ANY fuzz whatsoever on this thread. It
would look great embroidered and you wouldn't have the cost of "Sulky". The
only drawback is that from what I've seen there are not as many colors as
Gutermann so will stick to Gutermann on off colors. I look for that to
change as the quality of this thread will soon become popular.

Hope this has helped those dedicated Gutermann Customers. I know if I'm
going to take my time to sew something, I want the best material and best
thread I can get. Otherwise it's cheaper to go to K-Mart.

Sincerely,

Dawn Graham

Aha! It wasn't something I did! A couple of years ago, about to make a
silk garment for the first time, I asked for guidance from a clerk I
trusted at my local FabricLand. She sold me Gutermann thread. I never
had such a hassle with any thread. On size nine needles, it broke, frayed,
linted and generally made itself unpopular. I finally switched to good
old reliable Coats and Clark to finish the garment.

I was using it in both my Kenmore 30-stitch and my trusty old 221, so it
wasn't a machine problem. I thought *I* had screwed up, somehow! I had
to have both machines cleaned professionally to get all the lint out, and
both get cleaned carefully after every project and in between, so it
wasn't build up. Besides, all the lint was the color of the Gutermann.

I do wish I could find silk thread in the South Bay area, blast it!

I also found that My thread kept breaking over and over again last
year.......actually put that machine away for several months and used my
daughters since she was busy with wedding plans......finally with the
wedding over and she was ready to take home her machine I called and had my
machine serviced......The repair man had no problem with it......I thought
I was nuts......paid to have it cleaned and such.......discouraged I bought
myself a new machine and gave that one to my youngest daugter
(beginner).......She has had no problems with it either.......Now it all
connects......I've used nothing but Gutterman silk covered cotton for
years......My daughter just uses inexpensive thread........Thanks for
sharing that info......

I won't tell my husband this though.....he'll be wild if he finds I bought
a new machine for nothing......Its ok though it was time to upgrade anyway

Hi Dawn,
I have a brand new Husqvarna 400LE and was advised to use Gutermann
thread. I noticed a lot of very fine lint building up around the
threading mechanisms right from the beginning, and wondered if it would
be a problem. I e-mailed HusqvarnaViking and asked them about it, but
they said Gutermann thread should be fine. Your message leaves me
wondering whether they are aware that some Gutermann threads are made in
Mexico. I never checked the spools I used up to see where they were
made, and have since switched to Mettler/Metrosene, which doesn't seem
to do the same thing.

Thanks for the info, Dawn, I'll be checking my spools more carefully
from now on!
