Great question. Judging my the crowds at the Innsbruck show recently, there
are lots of us. My name is Dawn Hanson and I am an American living in
Copenhagen. We have a small group here called the Quilt Tasters. We just
love the antique reproduction fabrics from Holland.

A bunch of us, Pat -- and so, where are you? What sorts of quilts do you

We are a quite new small quilting group in FRANCE in FERRETTE (near swiss
border).
We have a lot of troubles in quilting nice stiches using the hoop. Are there any
tricks ?

I finished a king size quilt top last week. Rather large squares in a
white-on-black print, a white-on-natural print and a white-on-white
print. Then I didn't get the points right, so I've appliquéd a small red
square everywhere where the large squares meet.... The border is red.

The antique reproduction Dutch fabrics are fantastic... expensive, but
fantastic. There is a store called Den Haan en Wagenmakers. Maybe someone
can give us the contact information? Really, really special fabrics that
are perfect for quilting. If you ever get the chance to visit Holland, you
have to visit -- stores at least in Amsteram and Edam.

For anyone headed this way... Welcome to wonderful Copenhagen! We have
several quilt shops here. The one off Strøget is called "Quilters
Paradise"... and it is indeed wonderful. Expensive, but wonderful. There
is another store north of Copenhagen in the town of Lyngby, which has a nice
selection of fabrics. Most of the stores specialize in American fabrics,
but you can always find European fabrics and also books.
If anyone is headed this way, let me know. Maybe you can join us for a
"Quilt Tasting" -- held monthly in the evenings...

Welcome to Copenhagen! You can't miss this place. It is actually just off
the main street in the middle -- there is a little "square" right by Illums
department store. Walk past Cafe Norden until you get to "Quilters
Paradise". It is a great store. You'll get some wonderful ideas. I doubt
you'll buy any fabric -- the prices are terrible compared to the US, but it
is always fun to look.
Let me know when you'll be here. Maybe you can hook up with some local
quilters while you are here.

The best trick I know to get small quilting
stitches is to hoop kind of loosely. If you are
using a hoop, when you place the hoop on a table
you should be able to put your hand in the center
of the hooped quilt and touch the table. Gee, I
hope I explained that ok.
The object is to only have enough tension so that
the quilt is held firmly, but with enough slack so
that you can easily manipulate the fabric when
making a stitch.
Thin batting helps too. I like Thermore polyester
or Quilter's Dream cotton. I then baste the quilt
so all 3 layers are held together. Then I hoop
loosely (as explained above). I use a size 12
between needle, but you should use the size that
is comfortable for you to hold. You must also use
a thimble if you are going to use the "rocking"
stitch. That is the stitch where you insert the
needle *straight* down into the quilt just until
you can feel the tip of it with your underneath
hand. Then rock the needle back up to the surface
by using your thimble on the end of the needle
while pushing up from your underneath hand and
down with your thumb on your upper hand. This
*should* make a little "hill" in the fabric that
makes it easy to push the needle through. As soon
as the tip of the needle breaks the surface of the
quilt, you should use your thimble to rock the
needle (as vertically as possible) down through
the quilt again. I can usually get 4 stitches on
the needle before I have to pull it through the
quilt.
If this explanation (which sounds weird even to
me) is not clear, I strongly suggest picking up
Ami Simms book, "How to Improve Your Quilting
Stitch".

I live in Accrington, Lancashire, 20 miles or so north of Manchester,
which is a big city. Where I live used to be the centre of the cotton
spinning and weaving industry and, although most of the factories have
now closed, there remain many factory shops selling fabrics. Unhappily,
they do not sell quilting fabrics, as such, but it is easy and cheap to
get plain calico (I think you call it muslin).
Until last year we had the Liberty Fabrics factory here, plus its shop,
but that has now closed, because Liberty does not weave its own fabrics
any more: they are woven, I believe, in France.
There are several quilting groups near here and I belong to two of them:
East Lancashire Quilters and Clitheroe Castle Heritage Quilters. I know
of two others nearby, Red Rose Quilters and another whose name I cannot
remember. About 20 miles away are Garstang Quilters, a very large group
with a waiting list to join.
There are three quilt shops in my area, Aunt Jemimah's in Clitheroe,
Quilters' Cottage in Garstang and Embsay Mills (not a factory shop, just
in a factory complex) at Skipton. There is also a fabrics mill shop at
Nelson, but their selection is very limited.

My quilting and patchwork are a bit spasmodic. I've just been to the
Highlands for a holiday and took an unfinished quilt with me that I
started several years ago. I unpicked a lot of it a few years back but I
felt renewed inspiration. As it rained quite a bit, I was glad I had

several in the UK alone; there are also European FQ fabric exchanges
that go on here, I think Sal (a quilter in Berkshire) has about
20 on her list!
