Mat and I are off to England on Sunday if all goes well. I was last
there in May of 2002 for Malvern and some trauma to my back, but
that's a long story...
Anyway, I've lived in several different cities in England but never
visited Bath and of course want to see as many things as possible in
the 2 full days we will have there. Any great fabric shops? Of
course I want to see the American Museum and the great architecture,
etc.
We're staying with Mat's Auntie Kate and hopefully will hook up with
Megwen on her home turf!

Hi

You have to go to the roman baths! They are awesome!!
The costume museum is worth a look too!

There are only 3 fabric shops left in Bath! One sell cheaper end of rolls
and off cuts, I did get some wide 100% cotton for a quilt back there though.
One is the Husqvarna Studio, where I'm treated as part of the furniture and
who has quilting fabrics and all sorts of other stuff. The third is the LQS.

The centre of Bath is quite small, there are numerous tour buses which will
take you round the major tourist sites (Royal Crescent, Circus and so on).
You can jump on and off most of these once you've got your tickets.

See you,

Megwen

Don't know about LQS's but if it were me, I'd spend a LOT of time in the
Museum of Costume! :)

It's in the Assembly Rooms, off Bennett Street. It's on the route of the
tour buses, get off there, wander round the Museum then hop back on the next
bus!

Will they let you take pictures? I'm working (now and then!) on a
1620's costume for Mat - when he puts it on, he looks like Rowan
Atkinson in the second series of Blackadder. Yes, I will post
pictures someday (when we figure out how to edit our webpage again).

I'm going to stick up for the Roman Baths..a definite must see. There is soo
much of it left you really do get a feel of what it might have been like two
thousand years ago.

Ask before you visit! They have postcards of some of the things,
possibly including the half made man's doublet by Janet Arnold that
shows you all the stitching and construction from the inside.

Theres a museum with a quilt display there that I was reccomended to look
at, you might be able to ask tourist information. I don't know what the
museum was, it may have been a textily one!

Charlie.

Have a great time, this has to be my favourite city, go to know it when 2 of
our sons were at the university there..

There is so much to do and see, but it is possible to see it in a couple of
days, there will be several places to linger, and you must visit Poultney
Bridge the only bridge with shops on!

Country Threads is the LQS and that is not far from the weir.

Moira

I do not seem to see my posts, tell me if you can please!

I agree visit the bridge shops. The baths are amazing. That technology is
used today in the "in floor heating systems". Be careful if you go to the
Bath Cathedral, there are some very aggressive gypsy beggars out front.
They want to get close and try to pickpocket you. If you feel uncomfortable
with their invasion of personal space do not be afraid to SHOUT!!! GET AWAY
FROM ME! They will vanish! Other than that, enjoy the beautiful town.

Errrrr, it's Bath Abbey, not Catherdral!! :-) The diocese is Bath and
Wells, and Wells has the Cathedral

Dear Megwen, My apologies for this mistake. It has been a while since I
visited and could not recall the exact name. I am not familiar with the
Church of England (oh no another religious thread?) Sorry if I offended you.
I love your town. Linda

No offence taken, It's a mistake a lot of visitors make, a big church, so it
must be a Cathedral!!

Give me a call if you come back this way!

Would love to hop on over. Just a little apprehensive about international
travel just now. Bath is definitely on the check list. Thanks for the
invitation. Linda

I have been asked where the cathedral was in Cambridge! No cathedral
there either, despite it being a city. They really mean Kings College
Chapel!

Lincoln has a Minster, but even the locals call it the cathedral! Same
here in Canterbury, though there was also St Augustin's Abbey, just to
confuse folk!

Whether something is a cathedral or a minster or something else has to
do with whether or not it had a monastery attached. Abbeys had
monasteries but no administrative function outside that (though they may
also have been local parish churches), Minsters were cathedrals (the
seat of the diocese, where the bishop has his throne) with monasteries,
and cathedrals are the seat of the diocese, but never had a monastery,
as far as I can remember. Nothing to do with the Church of England -
all to do with the administrative organization of the pre reformation
Catholic Church in England.

Preston has just been made a city and is changing the name of a city
centre church to a Minster. How does that fit in?

It's an add-on, not a real minster! ;)
