This is such a fun little project and us quilters have just
about everything we need, mainly: fabric!
Before the youngsters arrive for the fest of Christmas,
pre-cut all sorts of fabric into 2-3 inches in any shape
you want. Circles, squares, rectangles, stars, anything!
Then have on hand some plastic flower pots or even empty
soup cans. Lay one of those quilts-that-can-be-used-anywhere
onto the floor and give each kid some glue and let them cover
their containers completely on the outside with whatever
fabric they choose.
As any good quilter would have on hand, make sure there is one
1-2" wide strip of fabric that will bit around the lip of the container
to give a nice finished binding. ;0
Christmas fabric? How fun! But different greens and
golds and silver work; heck, this is patchwork containers
we're making here! Pull out those scraps and go for it!
This is also a great school project for Mother's Day, Spring,
think Easter and just about any holyday we celebrate.
The pots make, well, a perfect place for a little plant or
even a small present all wrapped up ready to be put inside.
The cans make great pencil holders as we all know.
It can be messy but what fun they'll have and just a warm
wash rag will handle all the clean-up needed.
This isn't a new idea but a tradition that should be kept.
What treasures those kids will be making!
Heck, I'm not as old as the hills but just writing about
this has given me some joy!
