Hi,

I just stumbled across Magic Mike's Factory Fabric Scraps Offer
webpage. I just wanted to verify
with others that he's legit since he's asking for $$ up front. (I have
no problem pre-paying as long
as he's reputable). If anybody has done business with him (good or
bad), please send me e-mail (d...@best.com) since I normally don't read
this group.

Thanks in advance!
Deb Marks

HIGHLY legit! I'd trust Magic Mike with my first born grandchild, let
alone my $$.

He is one of our bestest frinds!!

I have looked at Mr Magic Mike's Factory Scrap offer. Have done
the survey (yes!) and probably e-mailed him (am not sure as this
wicked machine still has a mind of its own...). I like things
like "scrap offer". For many reasons - recycling, price, "lucky
dip". Alas, I live here (England) and scraps are there (USA). If
M.M. reads this could he please reply if there is an inexpensive
solution to my dilemma.
Now - a question to you all - have you made many quilts without
buying any fabric specially for those quilts, apart from backing
and wadding/batting? I have a pioneer spirit in me! Since
childhood I have recycled (cast-offs transformed into something
new - that's how and why I learned to sew), sweaters made from
unpicked wool (made a jumper out of 4 big bobble hats once!),
fabric re-used in many forms. And I'm not boasting!!! At some
point it became a way of life - when I look at prices for
garments in shops and know how much the fabric really is, I
cringe! I love having my fabric around - touch it, look at it and
I buy it, usually not enough, so I improvise. I have about 4
quilt ideas in mind at the moment. All will use what I have -
apart from batting/wadding and possibly backing. And sashing if I
don't have enough plain black (stained glass - type quilt with
fabrics my brother brought from Poland and with the inspiration
from The National Glass Centre in Sunderland). Of course I'll
want to replace the fabrics I'll use, but it'll probably take
some time. I'm not whingeing, just interested how you use your
fabric. Also, I find that buying a kit is not challenging enough
for me - trying to stretch what you have into what you want to
make is a challenge for me.

My first quilt project was made almost entirely from scraps I had on hand
after years of sewing for myself (and then my kids). Some of the fabrics
should never have been used, but... One in particular made a lovely, drapey
blouse and was pure hell to use in a quilt. I ended up calling it my Odo
fabric because it was such a shape shifter.
The second quilt project (started after finding RCTQ) again used only
fabrics I had about, including upholstery material from those decorator
samples books. Some of those scraps I'll never have again, and I was torn
about using them (but that was the point of a scrap quilt--to USE those
scraps!)
Looking over my web page, I can see that the only time I've bought
material solely for a project was for the set of 3 pillows I made for my
husband. All the other quilts and projects used fabrics I had bought for
clothes originally, fleshed out with purchases made over the years and more
currently from my LQS. (You want to see a project that used scraps from
back to front and everywhere in between, check out the "Butt Ugly" quilt on
the page titled "Sisters quilts".

That's what happens to me! I have all these beautiful fabrics and I don't want
to use them up. I keep hanging on to the last little itty bitty piece because I
just might need it for something. I even went out and bought a replacement for
one of my favorite purples.

However I'm happy to annouce that my Valentine's quilt was made totally from my
stash. Didn't buy a single piece for it except the batting.

Hi, Carolyn. I'm a scrap quilt maker as well. I've got enough stash that I
can even do my quilts in color themes without having to buy more fabric. The
only serious fabric buying I do is for the backing. I love scrap quilts!!!!

What type of pattern did you use for a Valentine Quilt?

I had a bunch of 6.5" red ninepatches from an exchange last year (red print
with red solid). I that same exchange I also got a 6.5" sample of each red
print and each red solid. Then I had some WOW and COC FQ's [HA! I love it! More
codespeak!] from a different exchange. So I arranged the the ninepatches into a
checkerboard with the WOW's. It started big but I cut it down to just 5 blocks
square. Then out of the print fabrics, I appliqued a heart onto each WOW
square. I bordered it in dark blue. It's ready now to sandwich and quilt. I'm
going to use it to practice my hand quilting before I tackle my niece's wedding
gift.

Two questions,
1. When/how do we get to see a picture of it?
2. What "wedding gift"? (tell us about it!)

Mudkat, nebby as usual, in PA where I think I've had enough snow
this year, thank you.

All my quilts have to use fabric from the stash, with very few exceptions.
When I buy, I just buy what I like for no other reason. Once it's in the
stash, it then qualifies as potential piecing material. Not logical, but
that's my rules for the game: make something pleasing out of what I've got.
And running out of something encourages creativity.

My next big purchase for myself is going to be a scanner. Then I'll tackle a
website (which I think AOL will give me). Meanwhile I'll have to go the
old-fashioned way and take a photo of it and send it to either Marissa or Magic
Mike. But either way, it's not really finished yet. It's still just a top.

Barb, it sounds wonderful. Did you just think this up yourself? I'm so
jealous of all you creative people.

Elaine (who like Mudkat) has seen enough snow this year. I do think there is
more snow out there than I have seen in years.

Barb,
It sounds wonderful! Hearts are on my to-do list.
I made a quilt last summer from my stash. One of the fabrics was even from the
guild rummage sale. Irish chain. Took about 6yds.
When I was done I went out and bought 8 yds of new fabrics to celebrate. No
wonder my stash is growing!

I love scraps also... I don't like the repetition of the same fabrics over and
over, and I could not make the same block so many times either!

Hi everyone..
I'm pleased to say that all seven of the quilt tops I made for Christmas
presents were made from my 'library' of fabric. I'm hoping to do something
similar to make some interesting back art for the same quilts thus hopefully
finally eventually...making something of a dent in my library for some new
replacements to find room on the self. Then only batting and thread will be
the new purchases...wil keep you informed if I manage to live up to the
commitment I have made.
