I'm a lurker who has exhausted all means to locate a kimono quilt block
pattern and hope someone here may be albe to help. I am looking for 2 quilt
block patterns (to use my wonderful collection of Japanes fabrics). The two
I am looking for are l)Kimono Doll pattern. It is seen in several quilting
magazines in theadvertisements for Sanshi quilt store in Australia. I have
emailed them in an effort to purchase this pattern without success. This
block is paper pieced and the women has "pieced" hair. I already have the
Amy Myoraku pattern which is almost identical except that it is not paper
pieced and her pattern has a girl with bangs. If anyone knows where I can
purchase the Sanchi pattern, please let me know.

2)The other kimono block may not be for sale. I saw it months ago in
quilting magazines. There was a full page ad for a sewing machine/quilting
machine (can't remember) and on the back wall was a wall hanging and the
kimonos has a 3-D obi).

I would so appreaciate any ideas/help. Thanks much

Kathy

Sorry I can't help with the blocks, but I can dig out a kimono wall
hanging idea for you if you like.

Also, now you've 'come out', you can't go back to lurking! It isn't
allowed! You have to tell us your chocolate preferences, marital
status, number of kids, general location, shoe size, QI team... ;D

Welcome to the best cyber quilt frame ever. Pull up a seat and join in!

Hi Kate,

Milk chocolate, no dark chocolate allowed. I'm married with 2 kids, one 20
and one 25, both still in college. One QI - a maltese with attitude! I'm
in Austin, Texas has have been quilting for almost 15 years. You'd think
I'd be a great quilter by now, but it's slow going :P. The important thing
is that quilting is definitely my creative outlet, my joy. I spend 1-3
hours a day piecing or hand quilting. I'm just now getting the hang of
machine quilting and love it!

The kimono quilt is an effort to get in touch with my roots, mother was
Japanese American. So I'd very much love to have a copy of your pattern.
Don't know if you can email it or if you need my snail mail. If you have to
mail it, I'd love to reciprocate with fat fourth in you choice of
colors/pattern. My pleasure.

Nice to meet ya'll. I'll be back.

There are two cute kimono samplers made with the same two blocks -- a front
view kimono block and a back view kimono block, both of which are sort of
3-d, in the book "Fantastic Fabric Folding" by Rebecca Wats. The back view
kimono block has a cute folded bow or fan for the back of the obi.

I like the book a lot. She does these kind of "fabric origami" folded
blocks that can be sewn right in like a regular pieced block, as well as
some folded pieces that get appliqued on. I did some of the folded flower
blocks -- they were simple and very pretty. The kimono blocks look very
straightforward as well. Anyway, hope that helps.

Hi Kathy,
Here's a link I found to a neat kimono quilt.
http://www.quiltknit.com/patterns/oriental2.htm It is the first pattern
listed on the page.

I've never ordered from this site, but I've heard good things about it.

Hope this is what you were looking for.

I'll scan it from the book, and send you the details. It will make
quite a large attachment file or two!

I've been sewing clothes since I was about 8, but only quilting a year.
You can see some of my stuff, including the kitties and the son, if you

Hi Kathy,
I have just been to the Sashi site.
http://www.sanshi.com.au/
Is it the pattern of the three kimono dolls you wanted. Would you like me to
ring them and try to get it for you? I am willing to give it my best shot.
Cheers,

I tried to send you it, but it couldn't get through - the mail server
didn't recognize your address. Can you email me with a workable one,
and I'll try again. When it comes, it's called Kimono wall hanging: 7
jpeg attachments! It's BIG and it's genuine! ;D

Speaking of kimonos, Vicki Portman and I went to a meeting of the local
quilters' group last night, and heard Susan Briscoe talk about her time
in Japan. I enjoyed it very much.

Not much about quilts except at the very end. For the most part she was
talking about Japanese dress and fabrics. She showed lots of slides of
modern Japanese people in kimonos for coming of age events, weddings,
and so on. There were some really cute ones of little kiddies. She gave
detailed explanations of the different styles of kimonos, the
hierarchies of what fabrics and styles of decoration were very formal,
formal, informal, and which were suitable for young people, married
people, different seasons, and so on. She also explained the
construction of the kimonos and the method of manufacture and dying of
different fabrics. There was a series of slides about the clothing worm
for kendo, which includes sashiko, and another series about clothes worn
in the past, by samurai, farmers, and so on.

After the slideshow Susan showed us a large range of kimonos and other
items of Japanese textiles. Most of these were handed round the class
for us to fondle and inspect, and some were modelled by class members.
Susan herself was wearing a kimono and obi (a wide stiff sash) with tabi
(socks) and sandals (I can't remember the name of the sandals!).

Finally, she showed us a small number of quilts and items of clothing
she had made using Japanese fabrics, and it was interesting to see how
she fused Japanese materials and sensibilities with the Western
tradition of patchwork and quilting.

Tomorrow she is giving an all-day sashiko workshop, which unfortunately
neither Vicki nor I can attend. But if you ever get the opportunity to
hear Susan speak, I can certainly say it's fascinating.

Oh my goodness - that's the one!!!! You are a genius - I have spent days
looking online (obviously not very effectively) and came up with a number of
blocks but not this one.

Still looking for the 3D one but several of you have mentioned a book which
I've ordered online.

Many thanks everyone.

Ruth, you are a doll. I'm actually looking for several of their patterns -
the kimono doll pattern and the geisha doll pattern. I think the geisha is
just an enlarged version of the kimono one. If you could give them a ring
about the patterns, I'd be very grateful.

Tia Mary,

When I went to the link on your message, the free kimono pattern is one of
the two that I was looking for. This is the Sanshi pattern I wanted. If
you go to the Sanshi website, they sell the pattern, I just can't seem to
buy it! They have a lot of lovely oriental patterns, and fabrics - seem to
be on holiday or something right now.

The other kimono I'd like to find is the one that appears in a sewing
machine ad - it is a pieced wallhanging with the kimonos only, no
women/girls. But the obi/sash seems to be folded in a 3D pattern. I've
orded a book someone here recommended that may have this pattern in it.

Thanks again,

Kathy (I think I need to have new signon as there are already several
kathy's)

Tried to write off NG but they keep coming back to me not deliverable.
Sorry Kathy, did you want the kits or the pattern?
The kit for the Geisha Doll is $20AUD and the chart $9 AUD
The three Kimono Dolls are $30 AUD and $11 AUD.
According to the web site you can order from overseas, but I will get on to
them on Monday and let you know.
Very hot here with lots of fires around our Capital. My daughter went off

Hi Kathy,
I have e mailed Sue Leighton White and received no answer.
I have rung her and her answering machine directed me to leave my name and
number, sadly said machine gave me no assurance that she would ring me in
return. As she has not rung me( Western Australia is 3 hours behind us, I
think) I have sent her another e mail.
Sorry I have no good news, but we continue the fight!

Hi Kathy
Still can't get your e mail address to work for me.
Received this from Sanshi today.
""I was on holiday leaving the business unmanned from mid December to mid
January, whilst I took my family back to England.
Apart from that we are an active business, working from home. We aim to
process all orders the same day, and achieve this most of the time. Plus,
we answer the phone, and reply to emails.
We have installed a new phone, which initially had teething problems. Or, I
may have accidently erased an email from you. But I am unable to understand
why I have heard nothing. When did you ring and email?
I hope that, having established contact, we can proceed to help you.
Sincerely,
Sue Leighton-White.

If you still need me to contact her again I will do so, but she seems to be
back in business now.

Hi Ruth,

I think the difficulty in my email is that the email is dimple.US not
dimple.net. I heard from Sanshi last night in an email and they do indeed
seem to be back in business. Thank you for your trouble. I'll post a photo
when I finally get my project done.

Hello Kathy:

Yes, I am writing to you 10 years after your post requesting a pattern for a kimono quilt that is 3D. I am looking at a picture of this pattern in an ad for Husqvarna sewing machine in the Nov 2001 issue of Quilters Newsletter.

The designer is Nancy Odom. She sells the pattern on her website. Just type her name into the search engine.

I figured I'd send you this info since you have a Japanese heritage and may be still interested in this type of design.

Good luck,

Terry from Michigan
