First Quilting Book

Hello Everybody
My name is Sadia and I live in Atlanta. I moved to America last year and
since then I have been watching "Simply Quilts" on HGTV. I can sew well,
I've never done any quilting, but now I just can't wait to start something.
For the past couple of months I've been trying to get me a book but I don't
know what to look for in one, I just cannot choose one. PLEASE HELP ME. Tell
me which book I should buy and I'll really appreciate any other suggestions

Welcome. I suggest that you go to the library and check out their
supply. Don't forget about inter-library loans!! Then you may have a
better idea about what you like and want to purchase.
That said, there are a few books which I see recommended often. The
Quilter's Complete Guide by Marianne Fons and Liz Porter and Quilts!
Quilts! Quilts! by Laura Nownes. My favorite quilt shop is
recommending Carol Doak's new book--Your First Quilt Book or It Should
Be (title is not exact, Carol Doak what is your book called?).
Since you have been watching Simply Quilts you may want to consider
some of the books from that show's host.

Dear Sadia,
You may want to start with basics including equipment and materials,
etc. I started with You Can Be a Super Quilter, by Carla Hassel, and
then went to her book Super Quilter II. She even has a shopping list
to tear out and take to your quilt store with you and practice projects
that helps you to master the skills as you go along.

My advice is to borrow before you buy!
The Atlanta/Fulton County Library System has dozens
of quilting books. Go to the nearest branch, or to
the main library, and find the 746's (that's the
Dewey number for patchwork).
Two of the more complete instruction books
are Liz Fons & Marianne Porter's Quilter's Complete
Guide and Diana McClun and Laura _____'s Quilts
Quilts Quilts. The library will have both of them.
Remember, every dollar you *don't* spend on
books is a dollar you *can* spend on fabric!

Great advice, Nann - support your local library. I love going in there
and picking out about 8 quilt books, then realizing I don't have to pay
for them! (And picking up four more!) When I find one I *love*, I go buy
it.
Sadia - if you are not in Fulton County, there are other great local
libraries here.

And we got another one.... :)
Well it depends on what you are looking for. Hand work, piecing ,applique
machine quilting...
My suggestion would be to get the down to the library and check out the
ones that are there. If there are any you really like then you can buy
it.

I also recently caught the quilting bug! I bought *five* different books
but by far I have enjoyed "The Joy of Quilting" the most. Each book was
good in it's own way - but the pictures and text combination in the "Joy"
book really worked for me. The patterns they feature range in complexity
and
give instructions/yardages for each in quilt in wall size, crib size, twin
bed..
etc. I jumped right in with a star of diamonds from seven different
fabrics.
The book is very clear.
The introduction includes very detailed info on necessary tools,
workspace ideas, color and compostion, cutting techniques. The pictures
came in *very* handy for the cutting - often I have to "see" what they
mean.
It is a GREAT book for beginners!!
I kept the other books for reference but I find the "Joy" book gets the
most use!!!
Of course this is highly subjective. Everyone has different tastes and
learning methods.
If you have access to a library or good book store spend a while in the
quilting section, open a few books and see what appeals to you.

Brief discussions of the basics - good book for it's size.
The projects just didn't appeal to me - although they are very nice. I just
tend to like to get in way over my head and do something complex the
first time out. I think it would be a nice intro for someone who isn't as
loony as me! :)
More Quick Rotary Cutter Quilts - Pam Bono Designs ISBN 0-8487-1512-8
(hardcover) 1514-4 (soft)
160 pages
Good explantory sections - and has a section on chain piecing and other
techniques not in "Joy" also has a mail order resource list.
I loved the designs in this book - but the assembly instructions weren't as
clear to me as "Joy".
Mostly text descriptions on what you should be doing, good illustrations of
the pieces.
I am looking forward to tackling these designs after I get a little more
experience.
Quick Quilting - Kim Ritter ISBN 0-8442-2656-4 (soft cover)
128 pages
Good explanatory sections on technique, fabric etc.. The designs are pretty
interesting. I didn't really follow the instructions readily, a lot of
re-reading. Good
variation of projects - kitchen items, jewelry roll, crazy quilting, wall
hanging and bed quilts -
oh and pillows too.
I'm sure I'll enjoy this one more as my experience grows.
The last book I bought is upstairs and I'm too pooped to get it - It's a
watercolor quilt book.
Good discussions on what fabrics/values/colors make good candidates for a
watercolor quilt. Again it's a bit advanced - but oh so beautiful to page
through.

easy to understand and I found myself hook. I made 3 queens, 1 full and 4
twins so far. Of course I do not do hand quilting because I have shoulder
