Yesterday I had the urge to clean out my kitchen drawers. While I was going
through the one next to the stove, I found something I vaguely remembered,
but can't identify. It's an orange plastic stick, about 5 1/2" long. It
seems sturdy, has a slight hook to the end (but not hook-y enough to crochet
with) and it has "Oxmoor House" stamped on the flat part at the opposite end
of the stick from the hook.

I know Oxmoor House published crafting books, and I have a vague
recollection that this might have been some kind of premium for subscribing
to something, but I don't know for sure. I also can't figure how it got
into a drawer of kichen implements, because I'd bet it's a crafting tool of
some kind. DH initially thought it might be for carving or cleaning out
pumpkins, but that doesn't seem quite right. It might be good for opening
up seams and giving them a little press.

I've posted a couple pictures on a web album. Here's the link, in the
folder marked "tool":

http://picasaweb.google.com/I.E.Zawil

Does anybody know what it's for?

Thanks!

It is a citrus peeler. It cuts the peel so you can peel the fruit
easily. I have a couple of them because I don't have any fingernails
to peel the fruit.

Wow that was fast! And that does sound correct, and is why it was in the
kitchen!

I have one of those. It was a gift from Betterwear. It is for peeling
oranges.
You cut down the orange in segments with the flat end, then insert the
hook end and ease the peel away.

I have two of them from Oxmoor. They stay in the sewing room in a mug with
assorted other things for turning, pulling, pushing and poking. Mostly I
use it when I've backed an appliqu and need to ease the seams out flat so
the backside doesn't show. Didn't know it could peel an orange; I'll have
to try that. Polly

I thought it was just the opposite - you score the peeling with the pointed
hook end and pry the peel off with the flat end. At least, that's how I was
taught to use the Tupperware version many years ago.

Thanks all! I'm debating whether to take it down to the sewing room to use
the way Polly suggested, or try it the next time I have some citrus in the
house!

Before reading the answers I thought it might have been one of those
letter openers mentioned in another thread. It looks like it might
serve as one anyway. Our citrus peeler is much smaller; it's a ring
thingy with a small blade sticking out. You put it on your finger
like a ring and run it around the orange or whatever. DW swears by
it. I have fat fingers, so I swear AT it.

That was the party where I got lucky at the games and came home with
the orange peeler, the egg seperator, the sugar scoop, and the cake
server. My mom didn't speak to me for a week, and then when I went to
college and they went to Colorado she absconded with all my

Either a lemon cake or an orange cake. I have a wonderful Lemon Sour Cream
Pound Cake recipe, however, that particular recipe doesn't need the eggs
separated.

Indeed, a citrus peeler ... if you have the time for such doings.
Gifted by the Tupperware hostess at one of those in-home parties.
I have several, from back when all my friends & neighbors had the
party & I showed up to increase the numbers for their prize. <G>
(& if they scrimped on the refreshments we didn't go back, & my
best friend wouldn't order anything <g>)
Oxmoor House also gave them away as a Free Gift!! Wouldn't that
make you order a half-dozen Exciting books? ! ?!!!!!

Why don't we have in-home quilt stuff parties ala Tupperware?
Any excuse to look at fabric & books & tools, and eat.
We could bring our laptops and place online orders.

Howdy!

It's a recipe for keeping kids busy.

EVERY mom knows that if you have those goofy plastic things
from the Tupperware party all jangling around in the bottom of a
purse or bag, you've got the makings to keep a little kid occupied
for at least an hour. Scoops, scrapers (no sharp edges, it's Tupperware!),
mini-containers, lids, cups, capsules, funnels, molds, keepers,
shakers, and my favorite: the lettuce corer. Oh, yeah, I have one left,
after people "stole" some others from my kitchen! <g>
Mix some or all together, pour into a totebag, serve immediately.

& a huge tote full of plastic gadgets

My favorite Tupper thingy was a teeny plastic bowl with a teeny
burpable lid on a little keychain. Just about big enough to hold 2
airtight aspirin. Or a fairy-size jello mold. It was also a gift, from
the last T-party I ever attended. Don't know what happened to it.
Maybe my nisse swiped it.

It's a neat little thingie that is designed to peel citrus fruits, and
they really do work! You can use the sharp pointy end to score the
peel and then pull it off yourself. Or, use the pointy end to score
the peel in a little circle at the stem end, pull off that little bit,
and then stick the long curved part inbetween the fruit and the peel
to loosen the skin that way. I happen to have two of them (freebies
at the State Fair years ago), and one is in the kitchen. The other --
ahem -- is with the sewing doodads and is a good thing to poke out
corners (doesn't leave a mark like a pencil does!) and all sorts of
other wierd things. Keep it!

Because there isn't enough chocolate in the WORLD to host such a
soiree.

> We could bring our laptops and place online orders.

Then what would be the point of the party? With T-ware, the idea is
for the hostess to sell stuff - not have guests buy it online from
elsewhere. Have the party, sure, but it wouldn't be a la T-ware
without a hostess-profit motive. ;-)

We used those for peeling oranges. The hooked end was to break the skin and
the flat end was to strip the skin back from the fruit. Hope this helps.

One of my favorite oddball kitchen tools is my hard-boiled egg slicer -- a
plastic base with an egg-shaped concavity, with a hinged top with a row of
wires, so when you close the top it makes egg slices. It's so much easier
than the messy process of slicing or chopping hard boiled eggs with a knife,
and if you mix the slices into a salad (like tuna salad) the slices are thin
enough to dice themselves, so to speak.
