Why is it that almost no one asked me for a quilt last year, and now
just within the span of time since Christmas the entire family plus
some has asked about my making them one?

Admitedly, due to injuries sustained a year ago this last December, I
wasn't in much shape to do a lot of things for most of last year.

But good heavens! I have had a full gamut of requests. From an older
friend who sometimes watches my 11 year old DD courteously asking if I
could make "something simple and durable for the kids when they are
watching TV" to my 2 year old DGD coming up and handing me her doll
and saying "My gamma, baby code, need banky, make?"

I have one daughter asking for a storm at sea with a lot of teal in
it, and another asking about a sunshine and shadows quilt. At least
the one who wants sunshine and shadows is willing to try making it
with my help. She is not a patient person though, I will probably end
up doing a fair bit of it. The gf wants "anything you want to do" as
long as it is in batiks, or maybe animal skin prints, or maybe....etc.
My DH has started hinting that we need another quilt on our bed.
Maybe thats a good idea, keeping the old one on the bottom would keep
the new one from being shreded by his toenails. Then there is the
friend who timidly asked if I could make something goth for her.

After completeing my nine hundreth sketch, I had planned on picking up
the fabric for the quilt the Aunties asked me to do (I'm sticking to
the violets and pansies idea and incorporating some suggestions from
here into it). I s'pose that one could go on my bed after it has been
vetted by them, though it is so NOT what I usually fancy. I think the
'banky' for the 'code baby' is going to the top of the list at present
though. After that, between the time and budget constraints, I
think I will have all my quilting time absorbed for the next looong
while. The family needs some new clothes and I have been planning on
making a hefty order to Dharma come tax return time to fulfill that
need. I think I may be sewing nonstop for a while here.

I guess when it rains it pours.

Definately do the banky for the code baby first. Most return for your
investment! My DD#2 and Spike and Giles all love their little dolly quilts! It
was fun to try out techniques on them, too, and use up lots of perfectly good,
but little, scraps.

For the one who wants batiks or animal prints, show her this:
http://griffinsflight.com/Quilting/xena1.jpg It's not done yet, still needs
borders, and will have giraffe flannel on the back, but it has both batiks and
animal prints! <G>

Oh, and when you come up with an idea for the goth one, let me know!

I agree. That "code baby" is your Great Grand-daughter or son, don't you
know! :-)

My DGD is 2 1/2. She goes with me to the LQS and always gets some fabric.
She is the proud owner of 4 yards of pastel plaid flannel because I caught
her hugging the bolt with all her might saying "Nanny make bankie, pease?".
I was just going to sandwich two pieces of flannel, birth it rather than
bind it, and then quilt it just a little. I did get to wash the fabric and
then cut it in half, but DGD took it over and is now the proud owner of not
one but two flannel blankets. She doesn't realize that I never actually
made anything out of them - she just knows she got the "bankie" she needed!

Since the Buggin likes pink, I'd been thinking of putting together
some blocks leftover from DD#3's interlaced star quilt. But the
chance to try out some new patterns is almost overwhelmingly tempting.
She does have more than one dolly......and that new sock monkey
obviously needs a banky too! *chuckle*

I showed it to her and she thinks it's cool! (I think it's pretty
nifty myself (G)) But she has changed her mind again. Now she is
thinking along the lines of kimono blocks with all different kimonos.
I don't think I have to worry about her making up her mind anytime
soon! By the time she does, I will probably have made her something
and be ready for a new project!

I have gotten a couple of emails about that. I'm going to sort them
out (as soon as the web gives back my webmail) and maybe start a whole
nother thread on that subject. More interest there than I thought!

I have a sock monkey that could use a banky. Want me to send the
dimensions? Up until recently Bob was wearing some clothes that belong to
Theresa (of Theresa and/or Tim) so they wouldn't get lost. Bob is a 4' tall
sock monkey. (AlsoKim's seen him I think) He sits in the glider rocker in
my room and watches over me at night. Most people think he's evil but I
think he's way cool!

Many Bob's are evil. You have to be very careful. They act all
normal around outsiders, but you can't turn your back on them for
a minute!

He looks just like the sock monkeys that are made out of the gray socks with
red heels and toes, only in a 4' variety. If I ever get a web page, I'll
post a picture of him.

I had an idea once to have a picture of Zena taken next to him for a size
comparison thing, since everyone knows what size (normal) sock monkeys are.
It would make her look even tinier! I just never got around to doing it.
And then there's the keychain sock monkeys which would make her look like a
Mastiff!

I had some blocks left from a workshop (and which I was never going to make
into a quilt), so I made some quilted placemats with them. Good chance to
practice different quilting techniques (learned why you don't closely
stipple quilt just a section of a quilt, for example!). I kept finding them
gone from the kitchen counter. Finally found them in the baby doll cradle,
where my 3YO granddaughter had tucked her "babies" in with their own
"quilts." I did the obvious: gave them to her!

Yep! AlsoKim brought over one of those wardrobe boxes that I'm going to see
if they will all fit into. I've got 5 really big bears (not near the size
of the Sock Monkey), I don't even know how many little ones anymore, a
couple of velvet frogs (Tad P. Frog and Polly Wog), an Orca, a Beluga whale,
an Elephant, a Hippo, a Lion, a St. Bernard who is good size, a Tigger (go
figure...he's been helping me get my feet unswollen at night as he's propped
up under the blankets so I can put my feet up on him...a pillow just wasn't
enough on it's own), a Penguin named Linus, and I don't even know how many
more. Lots! Mr.Icky used to get me a new stuffed animal for Christmas,
usually a bear but sometimes not. All the Christmas ones have Christmasy
names. Last years got named Bailey (George Bailey in "It's A Wonderful
Life.") and he has the coolest feet!

King, after Stephen King. Those not in the know will think you named him
after King Kong, so he has an insider joke already built in :)

You know, I think Slap is growing on me...Someone offer a really great name
quick! I can't have a monkey named Slap...it will give people odd ideas
about my sense of humor.

Tigg (ok, so my sense of humor is odd, but Slap Monkey, everyone will guess
at his middle name!)
