Quilt Stores FAQ - South West United States

ARIZONA

Store Name: Pine Country Quilt
Address: 1 Riordan Road, Flagstaff
Phone Number: (602) 779-2194
Comments: This is
a small store. Has some fabrics, books, nice thimbles, etc. Also has
some antiques
and crafts. Not the best quilt store, but has some interesting things.
(come in on the 17, when
you get into town go 1 1/2 blocks past McDonalds and
Riordan is on the left.)

Name: The Country Mouse
Address: Main Street, Florence
Comments: Florence is not so
big that you'd have trouble finding this place. It is
housed in an old
drugstore that was refurbished for James Garner and Sally Fields to
shoot the movie
"Murphy's Romance." The supplies are good and the owner is a very
active quilter who even goes to the Quilt Mart in Houston.

Name: The Country Corner
Address: 383 S. Hill St., Globe
Phone Number: (602)425-8208
Comments: This is also
an antique store and sort-of hardware place. They have a
terrific variety of good quilting
cottons and quilting supplies. Globe is somewhat
southeast of Phoenix; northeast of Tucson.

Store Name: The Quilted Apple
Address: 3043 N. 24th St., Phoenix
Phone Number: (602) 956-0904
Comments: They have lots of fabric,
sometimes too much to choose from. They are
helpful but not very intimate
if you're not a regular. On 24th St. between Thomas &
Osborn on the east side of the road.
Comments: Lauren Sinema (sp?) is part
owner of the shop. She has several applique
books out, the latest
being "Applique, Applique, Applique." If you stop by in the
afternoon, you
might get to meet her. She teaches a lot of the classes there. She will
autograph your book if you have
one - and all of Laurene's books they sell in the shop
are autographed.

Store Name: The Quilt Crossing
Address: 207 N. Cortez, Prescott
Phone Number: (602) 776-1823
Comments: This is a very small shop but it has some unusual fabrics and pat- terns.
(N on Hwy 69, as soon as you get into the center of town you'll see an old fashioned
town square with the court house in the middle. Turn right on Cortez, pass Willis and
it's on the right, two doors down from Murphy's restaurant)

Store Name: Remnant Patch
Address: 16121 So. Country Club, Sahuarita
Phone Number: (602) 602-648-3729 (Josette), (602) 602-648-1533 (Phyllis)
Hours: 9-5 weekdays, Sat 9-12; summers open Fri & Mon 9-5 or by appt.
Comments: This place is actually a double-wide trailer out in the country. To reach it
you take the Helmet Peak exit off I-19 (about 5 miles north of Green Valley and 20
miles south of Tucson) and head west (up over the interstate to the left) and go about
two miles to Country Club Road. Just around the corner is a rickety sign that says
"Remnant Patch." The reason all of the quilters in Arizona go there is that Phyllis, the
owner, has a deal with RJR and she buys bolt ends by the thousands of pounds. While
she does not have every color or pattern, she gets big pieces of many RJR fabrics for
which we'd pay $7 or $8 in town. She charges $3.39 a yard! Phyllis has been in the
midst of an out-of-state move but plans to keep the store open. I'd recommend
calling her or Josette before you go.

Store Name: Quilter's Ranch
Address: 107 E. Baseline Rd., Tempe
Phone Number: (602) 838-8350
Comments: They have wonderful quilts hanging on all the walls. They will spend
hours helping you if that's what you need. Everyone is very sincere and pleasant.
(They also have some crafts for sale.) (Just outside Phoenix on the S/E corner of
Baseline & Mill Ave.)

Store Name: The Quilt Basket
Address: 6538 E. Tanque Verde Road, Tucson
Phone Number: 602-722-8810
Comments: This is a very classy quilting shop. A former employee who still teaches
classes there is Mary Dillon, who wrote the Cathedral Window Quilt book several
years ago, also has a book of southwestern designs out, and is 1993 Tucson Quilt
Guild President. Their fabric selection is exquisite but not cheap. They have the latest
in supplies and books. They also have classes on a variety of subjects with great
teachers. I have seen them spend a lot of time with women who were trying to find
just-right colors/ patterns for that special project.

CALIFORNIA, NORTHERN

Name: New Pieces
Specialty: Quilting fabric, supplies, and classes
Address: 1597 Solano Ave. Albany
Phone Number: (510) 527-6779
Hours: 10-6 Mon-Sat, 12-5 Sunday
Comments: Great selection of quilting fabrics and supplies, though the store is a bit
constrained by its size. Has a large gallery/classroom with quilt shows that change
monthly and usually feature contemporary "art" quilters. Also sponsors monthly
chamber music concerts. Has a play area for chil- dren. Good, varied classes in all
kinds of techniques and design areas. Knowledgeable staff (all quilters) who are very
helpful. Large selection of books. Emphasis on art quilting rather than traditional,
though of course they serve all quilters.
Comments: a quilt shop/chamber music store. Interesting selections of fab- rics, nice
music and they always have an exhibit of quilts going on. On Friday nights they have
chamber music concerts in the quilt exhibit room.
Comments: I went to New Pieces in Berkeley for the first time. Those in the know
told me that a woman that works there, I think named Lily (short, gray haired) is the
best at helping you match fabric for your projects. It is small, stuffed to the gills with
fabric, and had different fabrics than Quilting Bee. They put different fabrics on sale
all the time, and they aren't discontinued fabrics. They also put books on sale for no
apparent reason, and I saw 1992 quilting books on sale at 25% off! While I was there,
in the back room there was a quilt display by one artist (it's a gallery too), and a bunch
of women were back there working on AIDS baby quilts. It is a very nice place.
Comments: get off at downtown Berkeley BART, transfer to F bus going North (or
take F bus from East Bay terminal in SF).

Name: Kasuri Dyeworks
Specialty: Japanese cottons
Address: 1959 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley (near UC Berkeley)
Phone Number: (510) 841-4509
Hours: Tues-Sat 11-6, closed Sun and Mon.
Comments: Expensive but well worth it. Get off at Berkeley (downtown) BART,
walk North a few blocks on Shattuck, it's between University Avenue and Hearst.
One of the best selections of authentic Japanese fabrics in the country, including
antiques, hand-dyed, silks etc... Cheapest are new cottons, but they're also beautiful.
Roberta Horton and Mary Mashuta shop here.
Comments: It is a great place (though the fabric isn't cheap!). Over the years they've
gotten more quilter-oriented as quilting has become more popular. They have
hundreds of fabrics of different types, all the classical Japanese stuff, as well as old
kimono, dyeing supplies, and beautiful wooden boxes and such.
Comments: Take University Avenue exit from I-80 (available east or west- bound),
head east (toward UC Berkeley, toward the hills). Go up University about 2.5 miles to
Shattuck (cross-street before Shattuck is Milvia) (you're about 2 blocks away from
campus at this point), turn left on Shattuck. Kasuri is in this first block of Shattuck,
on the right (east) side, almost at the far end of the block.

Name: Stone Mountain and Daughters
Address: on Shattuck and Dwight, Berkeley
Hours: open days and Saturdays, they close somewhat early (like 5 or 6) and are closed
on Sundays.
Comments: ~ 1/2 mile from Chez Panisse
Comments: A very good variety, originally a quilting store but now also a general
fabric store specializing in natural fabrics. Good prices, good quality. Get off at
downtown Berkeley BART and walk South on Shattuck half a dozen blocks, it's
between Haste and Dwight.

Name: Sweet Potatoes
Address: 1716 4th Street, Berkeley
Phone Number: 510-527-5852
Hours: Mon-Sat 10-5, Sun 12-5
Comments: This is a discount outlet for children's clothes, and they sell left-over
fabric from the clothes lines, at LOW prices. I have found some wild, bold prints.
Maybe half of it is cotton knits. Not a big selection and one must drop in periodically
to find treasures, but for non-tradition- al cottons, it is worth a visit.

Name: The Needle's Eye
Address: 2435 So. Winchester Blvd., Campbell
Phone Number: 408-866-1181
Hours: M-Sat 10-5:30, Sun 12-4
Comments: Very nice selection of current fabrics (not many calicos, etc.). Good
selection of books and patterns. Also carries crossstitch books, pat- terns, and
supplies. Usual classes offered. We have a quilting bee on Friday mornings (10 - 1)
where we are working on quilts for the American Museum of Quilts and Textiles in
San Jose. Anyone who like to quilt can join in. (This just not benefit the shop -- she
just provides us with the space (and some coffee).)

Name: Quilter's Paradise
Specialty: fabrics, classes
Address: 339 Pollasky, Clovis
Phone Number: (209)297-7817
Hours: Mon & Fri, 10-8; Rest of week, 10-5; closed Sun
Comments: The bad thing is most of the classes I would really like to take are during
the day, although they do have some on Saturdays. Also, if I haven't been able to get
in during regular hours, they have been known to open the shop for me after hours if
they are there for a class or sewing night.
Comments: This shop has the largest, most wonderful selection of fabric I've ever
seen, along with books, magazines and helpful advice. This shop is one of the best in
the United States, according to several well known quil- ters. It is located just outside
of Fresno, California (central California)

Name: Whiffle Tree Quilts
Specialty: quilt supplies, classes
Address: 10261 S. De Anza Blvd., Cupertino
Phone Number: 408-255-5270
Hours: 10-6 M-F, 10-5 Sat
Comments: This is smaller than Quilting Bee, but it is also right next to a Florentine
Restaurant, so come at lunchtime!
Comments: 10 year anniversary sale, June 10, 1992, 10-4: 30% off fabric, notions,
patterns; 10% off books, fur. July 13-8, 1992 3 classes for $50 or $20 apiece; $25 all
day machine quilting workshop.

Name: Pincushion
Specialty: quilt fabrics
Address: University Mall, Davis
Hours: open every day
Comments: This is a tiny store with a huge selection of cottons, lots of Jinny Beyer
and Hoffmann. Better selection of brights and darks, and poorer selection of pastels,
than Fabricland in Woodland. They charge about 1/3 more than Fabricland and are
much more precise about cutting yardage (Fab- ricland gives you 1/2 to 1 inch over
when you ask for 1/2 yard; Pincushion gives you 1/8 to 1/4 inch over, if that). They
have limited trims and tools, and no buttons. Their cross-stitch pattern selection is
much bet- ter, but charge too much for floss. No batting or extra-wide fabric for
backing visible, but they might have it in a back room. No dress fabrics. This store is
very hard to visit without buying anything: the sheer quanti- ty in such a small space
makes you feel like bolts are leaping into your arms right and left. Give 10% discount
to quilt club members, but you have to mention it -- they don't ask. Near UC Davis,
west of Sacramento, about 10 miles due south of Woodland.

Name: SAS Fabrics
Specialty: fabric by the pound
Address: corner of Hawthorne Blvd. and (maybe) 138th St., Hawthorne
Phone Number: 310-978-8985
Comments: If you are coming to visit the SOUTH bay area, it is a big place,
absolutely FULL of 'stuff', some fabrics really neat and some really not, but you have
to go a-lookin' and a-pickin'. I found some decent fabric which I used for the
backings of the two tie-quilts (card tricks) I made for my two grandchildren last
Christmas time. One novelty was all the different neck scarves sold, all types of color
combinations, stars 'n' stripes, batik/tie-dyed look, purple, red, blue, white with
black, waving American flag-looking scarves, etc.

Name: The Unique Needle
Address: 539 Blossom Way, Hayward
Phone Number: 415-727-9130
Comments: She does have a mailing list, altho all I've gotten is a once-a- year
announcement of her beginning heirloom sewing class. I took that one last year and it
was excellent, I was wishing she'd have an intermediate class this year. (I should call
and ask her, she'd probably start one -- the beginning class had just three students!)...
Very good value and she's a nice person to know. However, the "shop" is just in her
living room so don't expect a huge variety of fabric ...

Name: Cotton Patch
Specialty: Quilting fabric, supplies, and classes
Address: 1025 Brown Ave., Lafayette
Phone Number: (510) 284-1177
Hours: in the 10-6 range, daily
Comments: They just opened a store in Antioch, California, for which I don't have the
address. Very large fabric selection, including a whole room of just solids, as well as
some Japanese and unusual fabrics. My favorite place to buy fabrics for a whole quilt
at one time, since the selection is so good. Large book and periodical selection; all the
latest supplies and doodads. Friendly staff, some more knowlegable than others.
Somewhat craft- oriented (rather than being oriented towards "art" quilting). Lots of
classes, though I haven't taken any there. Has a play area for children.
Comments: huge selection of fabrics, they also are affiliated with C&T pub- lishing
so they have lots of books

Comments: my personal favorite
Comments: Best Quilt shop in South Bay
Comments: This is a great shop!
Comments: lots and lots of fabric, large book section, all the quilting supplies
Comments: That is a great store!!! It has a better fabric selection than any of the
quilting stores in upper Westchester County - although the prices were higher (some
of the fabric was up to $1/yd more at the Quilting Bee than in NY).
Comments: Quilting Bee has moved from Los Altos to a new space on Castro Street
in Mountain View. Still as nice as ever - the classroom space looks to be larger.
Comments: GREAT fabric selection, helpful salespeople, lots of books and classes.
Sales about every couple of months. 25% off anything in the store (except the high
end sewing machines) on your birthday.
I believe the store is owned by Diane Leone, author of a bunch of quilting books. Her
quilts (among others) are on display, and are fantastic! TQB sells machines also:

Comments: (2 blocks from Berkeley) ... one of my favorite old hangouts, and even
though they're not specifically a quilt shop they do have a good selection, it's worth
checking out if you have time.
Comments: Good quality natural fabrics, interesting book selection, great notions.
From downtown Berkeley BART, take 51 bus going South, or take it going North

Comments: (near Union Square in downtown SF) ... a 4-story extravaganza of fabric
well worth a trip to the city. Not all quilting stuff, of course. One floor of wool, etc.;
Britex Fabrics is great - a skinny building with four floors of fabrics. The best part is
the remnants floor.
Comments: The best part is the remnants floor, 1/3 off pieces up to 4-5 yds.
Outrageously expensive, with the occasional find, all great quality. Right near Union
Square, any bus to downtown or Powell St BART.

Name: Far Out Fabrics
Address: on Haight near Ashbury, San Francisco
Hours: open days and Saturdays, till 6, closed on Sundays.
Comments: If you can make it to San Francisco, don't miss Far Out Fabrics (yes, it
opened in the 60's) one of my all-time favorites.
Comments: Wonderful natural fabrics for general sewing, a great collection of prints
and solids for quilting, the store of choice for theater/costume supplies. Good
selection of notions and trims, and check out Mendel's, the art store in front, for dyes,
fabric paints, and misc supplies. Good prices in general. From any downtown BART
(up to Civic Center), take the 7 Haight.

Name: Satin Moon
Address: on Clement between 1st and 2nd Avenue, San Francisco

Comments: The favorite shop of the Sewing Workshop people. Great selection of
beautiful classics, like Italian wool gabardine, at corresponding prices. More
interesting and current colors than usual, good selection of solids, great notions. Small
and crowded, as good as the NY garment district. From downtown SF, take the 38
Geary, walk one block North.

underwear on the planet if I ever make all of mine ... everything in the store is 20%
off ... Kathie stuck to patterns for her little girl, who will soon make the "best
dressed" list.... She also sells everything mail order and will order anything she

Comments: Northwest corner of Newell and S. Main, the Newell Promenade Shop-
ping Center. It is nice, very big and open. A large selection of plaids (a la Horton,
although not her line) that were 60" wide. Also, they have precut fat quarters of every
bolt on the shelf, displayed on a tiny shelf directly under the bolts. Another plus is the
large space for classes. The newsletter that they were giving out said that the space is
available not only for classes, but also for private use. For example, if you want to
baste a large quilt and need a place to lay it out, call them up. Or if a group of quilters
want to hold some private quilting function, give them a call. It wasn't clear from the
newsletter what charge, if any, there would be for the space. I do hope that they get
blinds for the windows, though, as some of the shelves were in direct sunlight. They
have the 'solid' whites and beiges on those shelves currently. The ceilings are high and
all the wall space is hung with quilts showing off the classes they have sched- uled.
To get there, take the So. Main Exit off of 680 (going north or south). Turn north
(left) on So. Main and left on Newell street. Turn into the second driveway on the
right. They are in the back of a little shop- ping center on the Northwest corner of the
intersection of Newell and Main.
Comments: Owners are Janey Edwards and Roxie Wood. Has traditional-type
quilting fabrics and all Mission Valley plaids. Also has large selection of fat quarters,
available where the bolts are stored. they have a large selection of books and is a
bright, airy store, not cramped and no tripping over bolts like some (however they're
new).
Comments: oooh, oooh, this store is fantastic! It's large, open, lots and lots of fabric.
They have the bolts on shelves that have a small shelf un- derneath -- all of fat
quarters of the fabric that's on that shelf! If you were ever shy wanting fat quarters of
a zillion different fabrics, but hate to ask the store to cut them, this is a wonderful
solution. Just scoop 'em up and head to the cash register.
Comments: This is a wonderful store! My credit card is still recovering from fabric
purchase meltdown!

Name: Fabricland
Specialty: calicos
Address: Raley's shopping center, Woodland
Hours: open every day
Comments: Take route 5 to Woodland, get off at Main St., take Main St. to the west
end of town. Fabricland is at the westmost end of the shopping center there. This store
has an amazing supply of calicos, about 1/2 of the supply of dress fabrics. A good
range of just about every color. Also has lots of lovely silks, wools (in winter), and
polyester. Also home dec- oration, fake furs, enormous rolls of quilt battings, craft
supplies. Fair on books. Generally the sales people are helpful and friendly. Beware of
weekend sales and immense crowds! Woodland is in an area containing 5 dif- ferent
quilt clubs, so look also in the paper for exhibitions. Near Sacra- mento. A sewing
machine store is a couple of stores away; also at least 2 teachers in storefronts
elsewhere in town.

better selection of fabrics and carries lots of quilting stuff (books, patterns, etc.)
They've got classes, too.
Comments: It's definitely a chain. Also located at Santa Anita Mall, Arcadia (near

installation jobs, etc. Two story building, 6,625 sq. ft. Big downstairs area, display
lobby, side rooms for classes. Separate small rooms upstairs display different finished
products or supplies, all for sale: 1. doilies and dolls and more, 2. Various holidays 3.
potpourri and candles 4. Tea room, serve tea and fresh cookies 5. hair styling room! (I
didn't see this) 6. original designer clothing, jewelry and accessories 7. Village
Crafters room for demos 8. various classrooms. I walked in on a wood carving class!
They have to charge for newsletter - mailing list is 20,000! One last thing: men's and
ladies rooms on both floors!
Comments: A must see store! This is my "dream store" - the Nordstrom's of quilt
stores. You must see this store to believe it! It's not just a quilt store. It's a place to get
inspired and let your creative juices be stirred! They have classes, and part of the
upstairs you will see samples of their classes, it's so much fun too see! They also have
a wholesale warehouse(?) I'm not sure because I don't have a resale license, I just saw
it on the flyer. They also have a wonderful calendar that I buy every year. Their block
of the month patterns are wonderful applique blocks. The calendar also includes the
patterns.
Comments: Wonderful shop - lots of fabric and lots of blocks & quilts on display for
inspiration.
Comments: I love the place - you can wander around in there for hours! (Not to
mention spend many $$$ :-) ) The staff was always very helpful and friendly, and in
no way did I ever feel uncomfortable.

Comments: they're in Torrance, I was just there last week. They have every- thing

etc. You can really get some good deals there. I usually go once a month or so.

Name: Fabric Barn
Address: 3111 E. Anaheim, Long Beach
Phone Number: 310-498-0285
Comments: They have an average supply of fabric, but it's heavily discount- ed,
which is the nice part. You can save an average of $2.00 a yard off of Hoffmans. They
don't carry a full range of every fabric or color, but you can find some really good
bargains. They also carry a lot of ribbon and trim at very good prices as well.

Name: Africa By the Yard

Comments: While I haven't been to the store, they come to a lot of the quilt shows
that I attend and the fabric is wonderful. I always make a point of looking for them
and I've never gone away without buying something that I loved.
Comments: This guy has wonderful fabric. I bought some pieces from him last year at
the Pacific International Quilt Festival. I think he will ship stuff, too. He goes over to
Africa once or twice a year and buys some really beautiful, high quality fabrics. I only
wished I had more $$ be- cause I could only afford a couple of different pieces.

Phone number: (909) 985-9000
Hours: Mon-Sat. 9:30-5; closed Sunday
Comments: "The biggest quilt store in Southern California."
Comments: I don't know about the claim of the 'biggest' but they do have a bigger
selection of fabrics than most - maybe even bigger than the Piece- Makers at Costa
Mesa. They have a lot of Hoffmans (both prints and hand painted) fabrics, a nice
collection of Japanese, plaids, current fashion fabrics such as the Baltimore Beauties,
Victorian Wheeling, Aunt Gracie's scrap bag, etc. They have a pretty good selection
of books, notions, doll/ quilt/mini-quilt/clothing patterns as well. Best of all, they
have one of those VIP cards that entitles one to $25 worth of free store merchandise
whenever $250 is spent.
Directions: exit Central Ave. off 10. Head towards the mountain (and past the
Monclair plaza), turn right at Arrow, it's in a small shopping plaza with Sears

adding to their selection. They also carry a good selection of discounted fabrics, some
up to 50% off. They offer classes and the two ladies who own the shop are always
very friendly and helpful.
Comments: Large supply of fabrics and books. Really friendly staff. A bit unusual,
but you get your choice of a free charm square with purchase. Di- rections from
Pasadena: 210 West, exit at Ocean View Blvd, take a left at off ramp. Go down Ocean
View until it intersects with Honolulu, take a right. The shop is about 2 blocks from

Hours: Wed.-Sat. 10am-6pm, Sun. 11am-4pm
Comments: This is a new store and as a result has only about 50-70 bolts of fabric.
BUT, the fabric they carry is _WONDERFUL_. Beautiful Hoffmans, Nancy Crow,
Jinney Beyer, VIP, and others. The prices are very reasonable. They carry quilting
supplies, mats, thread, pens, etc. They also display quilts, and they are beautiful. The
owner took the time to give me a tour and tell me about all the quilts she was
displaying. She doesn't mind children looking and touching things. She also has a
puzzle exchange (bring a puzzle and take one home) and has a puzzle in progress on
the table for SO's, children, etc.

Comments: Great little shop with 30% off of fabrics, including Hoffmans. Those fly
out of the store, the owner (a guy) tells me! They have the entire Jinny Beyer line too.
Comments: about 10 minutes away from QIAD. Very different shop, all 100% cotton
fabrics and the entire Jinny Beyer line as well as the best selec- tion of solids and
white and ecru tone-on-tones I've seen around.

Comments: If any of you are traveling to LA or San Diego this summer, and can
manage to get to San Marcos (it is about an 75 minutes or so from Los Angeles and
30-45 minutes from San Diego, be sure and make this shop a stop. For one thing, it is
much like going to a quilt show -- there must be 30-50 quilts on display at all times.
For another, El hangs out there a bunch and you can meet her and even get her to sign
one of her books if you bring it along or buy one there. She's a neat lady.

COLORADO

Name: Betsy
Specialty: natural fabrics
Address: Broadway, Boulder
Comments: on Broadway between Pearl and Spruce (i.e., about two blocks from
Elfriede's). They carry all-natural fabrics - well, they fudge and carry rayon, too,
because it's derived from cellulose. A great selection of cot- tons, especially. Not
quilting cottons, but just fabulous colorful, high- quality, cool fabrics.

Name: Elfriede's Fine Fabrics
Address: 1936 14th, Boulder
Phone Number: 303-447-0132
Comments: very highly recommended
Comments: on 14th between Walnut and Pearl (just off the pedestrian mall
downtown). They have an amazing selection of wools, silks, and other fab- rics that
were a bit much for my (grad student) budget, but were luscious to look at.

Name: Denver Fabrics
Address: 2309 Federal Boulevard, Denver
Phone Number: 303-934-7415
Hours: open Easter Sunday
Comments: One block south of Evans. I really liked Denver Fabrics. They had
everything under one roof - upholstery, cottons, calicos, silks, wools, outdoor fabrics,
notions, books, you name it. The selection was good, service friendly, and prices very
reasonable.

Name: Great American Quilt Factory
Specialty: quilt fabrics
Address: 8970 E. Hamden Avenue, Denver

Comments: a quilt fabric store and not as grand as the name suggests. They had a big
selection of calicos and cottons but I guess our tastes didn't click.

Name: Lunn Fabrics
Specialty: airbrushed and dyed fabrics
Address: Denver
Comments: The homebase for Debra Lunn and her amazing airbrushed and dyed
fabrics. Her store was quite a revelation to me -- it's a big open space with 4 smaller
"rooms". The front room with the cutting table also has the packets, quarter pieces,
and a great selection of interesting buttons, plus some notions. The second room is
wall to wall BOLTS of fabric, including all the amazing dyed stuff, some excellent
silk screened prints and a very select assortment of printed fabrics -- some wild
prints, lots of black and white prints, and some African stuff too. Oh yes, and dyed
silks too, and scrap bags, and dyed solids. Prices on the multicolored dyed cottons
were about $14-17-20 a yard. It was great to be able to buy just a quarter yard. There
is also a giant classroom -- they had samples for all the upcoming stuff on display,
and that was like a show in itself! There is also a big back room (the dye lab?) and a
small gallery space in front.
Comments: Further back are the airbrushing room, Debra's studio and several other
areas.

Name: The Fig Leaf
Address: 232 E. Monroe Dr., Fort Collins

HAWAII

Note: the last word on each address is the island name.

Name: Dragon Mama Futons and Fabrics
Address: Hilo, Hawaii
Comments: The owner is a Japanese woman who moved to Hawaii from Berkeley,
and I was getting some fabric at the shop one afternoon when she asked me what I was
doing with 1/4 yard bits of all these different fabrics. I told her I make quilts, and we
had a long chat about it. She told me she was getting in some more prints in a few
weeks, and showed me samples of all those lush Asian/Oriental fabrics (she just said
they reminded her of Japanese robes). I was devastated that she wasn't getting them in
until after I was leaving, and mourned that I didn't even need all that much. I offered
to buy parts of her samples, and she wouldn't hear of it -- she spent the next 20
minutes carefully cutting pieces of at least 15 different fabrics and giving them to me.
We parted on terms of mutual admiration, and I am using the fabrics in a scrap
Tumbling Blocks quilt top. The gold is perfect in small amounts this way, and I will
always remember her and her shop; it's better than buying the fabric, really, even
though it would have probably cost less than $10 for the yardage I ended up with.

Name: Calico Cat
Address: Koko Head Ave., Kaimuki, Hawaii, Oahu
Comments: There's Calico Cat, in an area of the city known as Kaimuki. It's on Koko
Head Avenue, just up the hill a bit from Waialae. The Kaimuki area is worth visiting
for the restaurants, of which there are many, and lots of inexpensive bakeries.

Name: Kaimuki Dry Goods
Address: 10th Ave., Hawaii, Oahu
Comments: Seawards of Waialae. A big store, much the same stuff as you would find
in a mainland store, but perhaps some Polynesian prints and Japanese fabrics that
would be interesting.

Name: Musashiya
Address: Ala Moana Shopping Center, Hawaii, Oahu
Comments: A not-too-exciting Japanese run fabric store, with some Japanese fabrics
and notions that might interest you.

NEVADA

Comments: This store is a very progressive and offers classes and Newletter. I first

here. Fabric is about $1/yd cheaper than in my area (Bay Area Northern California).

Name: Cloth Cottage
Address: 221 Vassar, Reno
Phone Number: (702) 348-0086
Hours: 10 - 5:30 Tuesday through Friday
Comments: (Reno has almost *no* craft related shops) The folks there were nice &
helpful and they have a lovely big cat named George. The shop is in a reconditioned
house (there may be an apartment upstairs) and they offer classes. The selection of
fabric was decent and the stock was all well- ordered and clean.

TEXAS

Name: The Quilt Store
Specialty: 100% cotton quilting fabrics
Address: 3309 Hancock Drive, Austin
Phone Number: (512) 453-1145
Hours: 10-5 Monday-Friday, 10-4 Saturday
Comments: This is the only good quilt store in the Austin area. In addition to the
usual brands (Ginny Beyer, Hoffman, Alexander Henry, Terri) they also carry some
great batik and African fabrics. The people there are knowledgable quilters who are
helpful and patient. They will give sugges- tions or simply let you browse as long as
you want.
Comments: There are two quilt stores in Austin. The other is Quilts 'N Things, which
is not worth bothering with. It's tiny and the people are rude. The Quilt Store is quite
good, though. It has the usual quilt store collection of cottons: Jinny Beyer, Hoffman,
etc. And the people are very friendly and helpful. The only real problem is the hours:
no Sunday, no evenings, and closes early on Saturday afternoon.

friendly and helpful. They had lots of classes that really fostered friendship between
people.

Name: Kay Fabrics
Specialty: good-quality natural fabrics
Address: Arapaho, Dallas/Richardson
Comments: just west of the Central Expressway. Decent stock of good natural fabrics,
real men's cotton shirtings (not JoAnn/Hancock stuff, I mean sea island cottons for
$32/yard), large party dress fabric selection, and more belt buckles and sequined,
beaded appliques than I'd ever seen, even in Texas. The best wools in town. It's been a
few years, but I do hope they're still there! Good sales on holidays.

Comments: In a darling little house in downtown SA. Many little nooks & crannies
filled with quilty stuff. My favorite shop based on "atmosphere" alone! Very helpful
staff. Good selection of fabric. Quite a lot of kits for small stuffed dolls,
country-type gifty stuff, etc. Neato newsletter published periodically. Many classes
offered: basic quilting, specialty quilts (crazy, lone star), lots of project classes (Santa,
sunflower vest, log cabin wreath, etc.). Fabric coupons offered (accumulate $200 in
regular-priced fabric, get $20 in fabric free). Have several kits of fab- ric they've put
together for various projects. Will mail-order fabric - send them $X, indicate type of

postage, they'll use the remainder for the fabric). Quite a few patterns for clothing.

UTAH

Name: Gentler Times Quilt Shop
Specialty: quilts, handmade crafts
Address: 4880 S. Highland Circle, Holladay
Comments: A quilt store in a neat old house. They sell quilts and other handmade
crafts. There is one room devoted to quilting fabric, but it's small and I didn't find
anything that I hadn't seen in Sandy.

Name: Two Dollar Fabric
Address: 73 W 7200 S, Midvale
Comments: Some interesting things.

Name: Quilter's Patch
Specialty: polyester/cotton sheet scraps
Address: 1632 S. Redwood #A, Salt Lake City
Comments: All they have is scraps cut from sheets. Everything I saw was a
polyester/cotton blend.

Name: Bernina
Specialty: sewing machines
Address: 688 E 9450 S, Sandy
Comments: A Bernina dealer that also has fabric. Not a large selection but I found
some really interesting things. They have a small but very nice department devoted to
quilts. The greatest density of fabric stores I have ever found anywhere in the world is
in Sandy, a small suburb south of Salt Lake City. If you have a car, you can visit at
least five worthwhile stores within a couple of miles of each other.

Name: Cotton Shop
Address: 9441 S 700 E, Sandy
Comments: Sort of a strange place. Some regular quilting fabrics, some cheap flat
folds of more off beat stuff.

Name: Fabric Warehouse
Address: 9251 S 700 E, Sandy
Comments: A branch of Hancock Fabrics, with the usual collection of cottons and
other things.

Name: House of Fabrics
Address: 865 E 9400 S, Sandy
Comments: A regular general purpose fabric store. The prices were very high, but all
fabrics were 30% off; some sale ones were 40 or 50%. I don't know if they always
have the 30% off policy. Without it, their prices are really out of line.

Name: Quilts, Etc.
Address: 11 East Main St. (8691 South at State), Sandy
Phone Number: 801-255-2666
Hours: Tu-Wed-Fri-Sat 10-5, Mon & Thurs 10-9
Comments: A wonderful quilt fabric store with tons of gorgeous fabrics. No bargains,
but lots of great stuff (Hoffmans, Alexander Henry, etc.).
Comments: Very LARGE selection - they have between 6000-7000 bolts of fabric
according to the employees. As usual the yellow and orange sections could use work
but they have stacks and stacks of everything else. They cut fat quarters for the normal
price of a quarter yard of fabric. Definitely worth looking up - especially if you're on
your way to Snowbird or Alta to ski.

Name: Fabric Center
Specialty: flat folds
Address: 1629 W 9000 S, West Jordan
Comments: Strange place. Mostly flat folds, but some of them are interesting.
