Need more help with Bernina - feed dogs won't come back up.

When I started to do some piecing, the bottom thread got picked up and
created a jam. At least I think that's what happen. So I took the
piece out and took out the bobbin - removed a small piece of thread
and some dust bunnies. I lowered the feed dogs to do that. Now the
feed dogs won't come back up.

Anyone have a clue what I did - or how I can fix it?

This is the same machine that had the instant reverse bottom break in
March. The dealer had to order a whole new face plate -- and was nice
enough to replace the motor that had been whining -- (another dealer
had been ignoring me when I kept reporting it -- neither dealer is
where the machine was purchased). It took 2 months to fix because of
problems getting the right part from Bernina and I've only had it back
just over a month.

Help me -- any suggestions appreciated.

I don't know about the Bernina- but on my Viking even when you put the
feed dogs to the up position- they don't actually GO up until you start
stitching, then they stay up. Hope it's as simple as that.

Kim is right. My Bernina won't let the feed dogs back up after cleaning
until you actually start stitching. Made my heart stop beating the first
time I dropped them for cleaning and then they wouldn't go back up. They
just thunk back into place when you start going. I hope. Polly

Yes Kim, Polly is right...you need to turn on the machine and take a
stitch.

After posting I continued to fool around with it. I nudged the
feeddogs slightly and they popped up into place. I have some things I
need to finish before I dare push the drop feed dog lever again and
then I'll watch to see what happens. Yep - my heart was ready to stop
too - especially since the machine had just spent two months in the
shop.

Thanks for the information and support.

Its those times when you need to finish for deadlines that it is
handy to have a back up machine. Just a simple mechanical machine
will get you through emergencies. I had a problem years ago 2 weeks
before Christmas and no back up machine. I am really well covered now
though : )
If you machine takes 2 months in the shop you definitly need a spare.

I LOVE old but good machines. My FW just keeps humming along. My
"main" machine is a Bernina 817, with eight "fancy" stitches, and one of
the few items DH doesn't have to worry about me being tempted by is the
new sewing machines! (And the Bernina 817 MQs like a dream ... the only
problem is the dunce operator.)

My main machine is my Pfaff 7570 purchased several years ago. I wasn't in
the market for a new machine but I happened to accompany a coworker to the
machine store to pick up one of her machines which was in for normal
maintenance. I walked out with the Pfaff! I told her never to take me to
pick up her car from the shop!

Anyway, my spare is my Singer Futura, purchased in 1972. Still sews like a
charm. I like this one especially since you can rewind bobbins right in the
machine! It's nice to have an extra machine that can be used for a second
project that may be in the works.

Then I have my 1948 FW which I really haven't fiddled with yet, but it looks
like it hasn't been used much, but I do want to get time to play with this.
I also have a 1952 Singer from my MIL who passed away last year. It looks
like a FW but is in a table. I haven't used it yet. It's stored in our
spare room in the basement right now waiting to have the cabinet refinished.
I did recently purchase fabric to redo the sewing bench though.

DH recently bought a cheapie machine that rewinds bobbins right in the
case, too, and says he loves it. I'm baffled at that concept. Why is
it better to stop stitching, remove what you're working on, and rewind
the bobbin, than to have a bobbin winding WHILE you sew so when the
existing bobbin runs out, you can leave your work in place, pop a new
bobbin in, and continue stitching? I just don't get that.

Cause it's better if you haven't sewn four feet of punctures into delicate
fabric before realizing that the bobbin ran out and now you'll have to
restitch it all over again. BTDT lol

I gotta ask, does the thread that's going onto the bobbin run thru the
needle as well? Sounds like it sure would fray it faster. Does the needle
move up and down while it's filling the bobbin? more wear and tear. If it
doesn't move up and down, you wouldn't really have to remove your work,
right?

I have an old Singer Futura. I used it for over 25 years and filled the
bobbins in the machine. I did take my work out from the needle. I needed
to move a small lever over the bobbin case, but then just stepped on the
pedal. The needle moved up and down but in all the years I used the machine
actively, I never had a problem with the thread fraying.

I can't speak for other machines though, so you make a good point.

Question---Will someone invent a rewind machine for a sewing machine
bobbin? It would work like a video tape rewinder,--a small, independent
"little black box" that you just pop in a spool of thread and a bobbin
and hit the wind button. It should be a big hit--you don't have to pay
me for my idea, just invent the thing and sell me one. Red Queen

When I took that long arm class the teacher had just that for winding
the bobbins. Wonder if you did a check of long arm suppliers if you
could get one?

you have a gadget to do it then you have to have a
space to store the gadget AND allocate brain cells to
remembering where you stored it!!! I need to save every

WHOSE brilliant child was that? Good golly, it's even a Viking

winder is on the fritz, and I have too much to do before August 15th to
let my machine out of my sight to take it in. Charlie's pretty smart,
but at five years of age, I don't think could cobble this together for me.....

Nevermind about that. Let me dig out the old slot-car motors, some gears,
and the soldering iron, and I bet I could put something together that would
wind a bobbin in less than four seconds.

Speaking of slot cars. We bought a set at the neighbor's garage
sale for Shea's bd last month and the 'boys' are having a blast
with it. I wanted them to get it cuz it reminded me of when I was
little and my boy cousins had a set. My sister was allowed to play
with it, but not me. I guess they were afraid I'd break it. I was
littler. I still haven't played with Shea's, but I will!

And as an added bonus, you could always tell when the bobbin spool was

getting low. No more nastly little suprises in the middle of a seam!

I don't care what it looks like or sounds like or smells like if it
works. I'm not even particularly interested in how fast the darn thing
goes. The bobbin winder on my poor Viking is so weak it can only wind
about half a bobbin before it tuckers out and it gets too heavy to spin.

Funny you should mention that idea. I've been asking my clever and
handy husband for some months to do just that -- create a little
stand-alone bobbin winder. Other quilting friends have seconded (and
thirded and so forth) my idea. He promises me that a prototype will
be on the way soon. Planning to nag, oops, remind him until he gives
it a try. I'll keep the group posted on his progress.
