While I agree that Crazy Ladies and Friends is a lovely quilt shop (I
*love* their coordinated fat quarter packets), Mary Ellen Hopkins is no
longer working their. The Crazy Ladies are fun too though.

Two other L.A. area quilt shops: TreadleArt near the corner of Pacific
Coast Highway and Narbonne Ave. in Lomita, CA. and also: Sew Fun located
at the intersection of Prairie Ave. and Redondo Beach Blvd. in Torrance,
CA. These two shops are less than 5 miles apart. TreadleArt has just
about every quilting notion that is available (I think), not to mention
at least 1000 bolts of fabric, quilting/sewing/etc books, video rentals,
patterns and really neato stuff. Sew Fun, on the other hand, has the
most wonderful fabric selection I have ever seen. Maybe it is just that
the buyer and I have similar tastes in fabric, but I have never gone in
there without buying at *least* several fat quarters.

Jeanne is right, it's a great shop - but a note to say that Mary Ellen
Hopkins no longer owns it. I shopped there a few weeks ago and the new
owner was very nice and helpful and is stocking lots of new fabric
there since my last visit (I live in No. CA but always go visit Crazy
Ladies when I'm in Santa Monica).

TreadleArt alone is worth the drive to L.A. And they do mail order too.
:)

BTW if you ever get up to Santa Rosa, the other TreadleArt store there is
even bigger! I have a good friend who lives near there and she teases me
that I come not to see her, but to go fabric shopping. ;)

These shops are great, but if you're in the neighborhood you should
check out McGuire's Quilt & Needlework which is at 520 Santa Monica
Blvd, Santa Monica and Luella's Quilt Basket which is on Sepulveda Blvd
in Manhatan Beach. McGuires is about 10 blocks from Crazy Ladies and
Luella's is about 5 miles from Sew Fun (and on the way if you're coming
from Santa Monica).

If you'd like more detailed information about these shops (or others in
the Southern California area, please feel free to drop me a note.

Ah-hah. That explains a few things. I dropped into Crazy Ladies
last weekend while we were in Santa Monica. I didn't see ANY special
groupings of Mary Ellen Hopkins fabrics (the clerk said "Oh they're
all blended in with the others..." when I asked) and I didn't see any
of the quilts I knew from her books or TV shows. In fact I didn't get
the very best impression of the place - none of that wild energy she
seems to give off.

I am a bit surprised they didn't mention she's no longer an owner. I
asked if she was around to sign a book I'd brought, and they said "Oh,
she's not around, I think she's on the road..." and that was that!

Oh well. Live and learn. I did buy a little fabric there, but none
was by MEH. BTW I was even less impressed by McGuire's - very little
fabric, and a man at a desk in the back taking no interest in the
customers. Pretty sad to let a quilter who is LOOKING to bring home
fabric souvenirs walk out without a purchase!
