On a recent trip to the Kuna Indians in Panama, I purchase some squares
with which to make quilts which had been hand-embroidered. The colors are
vibrant, cotton, and also appliqued with many different colors together.
I think they have not been pre-washed. What is the solution density of
vinegar to water, salt to water (or whatever will set the colors). I
would like to make a quilt using these four inch blocks if I can figure
out how to insure that the colors will not run.

Any help would be appreciated.

Forget the salt or vinegar and look up Dharma Trading to get some
synthropol and retayne. When I last called to place an order I spoke
with Lisa who is a quilter and hand dyes fabrics. She will have tons of
info for you and is very talkative. She will be able to direct you to
the proper products to truly set the dyes in the embroidery.

I usually add about a cup of salt to the low setting on my washing machine
and use comfortable warm/hot water. Let it soak until the water cools,
agitating every so often, then rinse in cold water until it runs clear.

/Good luck. Bobbye

I want to second Gale's advice. I just recently got a newsletter from
our local extension service. They conducted some tests to determine the
best density of vinegar or salt to water to set colors, and found that
the best density simply didn't do any harm. Others caused more color to
run. :-/
