I signed up for a trade in an online fiber art swap group and now I'm
sweating it out over making Christmas decorations with inchies. Now
people are really gaga over these little one-inch-square quilted
things. But I'm having a hard time wrapping my brain around the
appeal. And I'm having a hard time making them look anything other
than pathetic. I quilted them and edged them and threw them away. I
glitter glued the edges, and threw them away. I dipped them in paint.
And threw them away. I really can't see anything cute to do with these
things.

This is just a moan. I finally put three on a ribbon and added some
bells. I'll figure out the other three this afternoon. My poor swap
partner. She's going to be disappointed. I better include some
chocolate in the package.

O.k., would you tell me what these are? I haven't heard of them. I
bet the ones you made are just fine and you are your worse critic.
From what I've seen of your work, I can't imagine them not being
wonderful! Donna

How about fussy cutting a small print Christmas fabric? Like maybe a little
candy cane and then decorate the candy cane with something sparkly like trim
or thread. I'm afraid I'm not much good at ideas, either.

Good luck with your inchies...

Sunny,

I can only commiserate. I haven't heard of them either but:

Creative as I know I am, these are some of the main reasons I don't go
in for RRs of any kind.
Don't feel too bad. (I've been hearing that a lot from others
lately). Recently I've been discovering a lot of things I thought I
wanted to do and just cannot for whatever reasons.

I recently borrowed a book on inchies from a guild member and actually
thought they might be fun to do. For inspiration you could check out
"Inchie Quilts" by Nadine Ruggles if you haven't seen it already.

Sunny, I agree with you.....I've come to realize that I do not have to
jump onto the bandwagon for every quilting craze that comes along.
E.g., fabric postcards. Don't howl, anyone; I just have other quilted
things I want to make. (And I though I've avidly sewn along with four
of Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville mysteries, I did not rush to make
"Christmas Lights" (a three-parter in Quiltmaker) and I haven't pulled
fabrics for the upcoming online "Carolina Christmas." And the sun
still rises in the east and sets in the west.

Whew, it's over. I appreciate all the advice and suggestions. I
finally gave up on making them look like the suggestion given on the
swap page and went with something pretty weird. I'll post pics
tomorrow. No energy today. Suffice it to say there is more metal wire
than fabric in these ornaments. And the inchies are simple muslin
squares. Much easier. So they're finished, and I won't sign on for any
more inchie swaps. I just had no idea how uninspired I could be. Nann,
I do like art quilts and I'm learning a lot about surface design. On a
slightly larger scale. Some things are just not for everybody and
inchies are not for me.

Photos tomorrow,

EVERYBODY I know sent me links to "Inchies" when they first heard about
them. "You make miniatures, you'll LOVE this".

No, I won't. That's 1/4 quilting and 3/4 artist. I don't have the artist
gene. I think they are really neat, I just don't have the vision.
