need poly batting advice

I haven't been reading the newsgroup regularly as my life has been in
a turmoil lately. But now I need your advice.

This next year I will be making more than the average number of
charity quilts. In the past I have always used cotton batting but this
time I think a polyester batting would be better. Most of these quilts
will be traveling out of the country in suitcases. With the stricter
weight requirements on luggage, the less a quilt weighs the better
plus a polyester batting would dry easier. I plan to experiment with
several brands of batting and then order it by the roll.

Since I have always liked the Quilters Dream cottons I thought I would
try their polyester. I know the low loft batting hardly feels like
there is any batting in the quilt. Would a mid-loft give the feel of a
quilt without any extra bulk for the suitcase? Has anyone tried their
new Earth-friendly "Dream Green" made from recycled plastic bottles?

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Susan, I frequently change my mind mid-sentence but my absolute love just
now is Mountain Mist Gold. It's a 50-50. It behaves beautifully when
quilting, doesn't need much pin basting, washes huggy. Before you buy
massive quantities of batting, do try a crib-size of the Gold and see how
you like it. Polly

If I'm making a quilt via machine for a charity auction or just to try
out a new-to-me technique I use whatever low-loft poly batting happens
to be on sale. (Yeah, I'm cheap!) If I'm making a quilt completely
by hand to keep or give to family I use Quilter's Dream. The mid-loft
poly gives the feel and weight of a lot-loft cheaper poly, is great to
work with, and gives a very old-fashioned look and feel to a quilt.
You might want to buy a small hunk of it and make a couple of pillow
covers, place mats, tote bags, etc. to try it out before you commit to
it for something large.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have used a Mountain Mist on my
miniatures but must check if it is "gold".
