orca
colors in "hand-dyed" fabrics are relatively new, and have
revolutionized (well, almost) applique where flowers were almost
always done in solid colors. Plaids were the rage a few (10?) years
ago. Jinny Beyer converted many quilters to "border" prints.

have been a few times that I wanted stripes or borders. Now, I'll remember

under the mistaken impression that I would ever actually DO a watercolor
quilt. HA! Once I figured that just wasn't going to happen I had to come
up with something else to do with them. I've seen lots of different
variations on the "bugs in a bottle" theme, canned fruits and veggies,
little girl stuff, little boy stuff, etc.. I think a bottle quilt might be
the ticket, making the jars and bottles different heights, widths, maybe
even come up with a way to make some look like perfume and/or Genie bottles
to carry through the the scent of flowers theme.
At one time I did cut about a gazillion and eleven 2" strips from all my
florals in anticipation of using Deanna Spingola's method of strip piecing
a watercolor quilt but instead took all those, sewed into groups of three
and cut into 5" rail fence blocks. I made a lap size quilt out of about
1/5 of those blocks for "one of the best friends I've never met" (we have a
lot of those thanks to the Internet, don't we?) with the clumsy name "My
dreams of making a watercolor quilt ran smack dab into a rail fence". I
have enough blocks to do another lap size and a big one for my own bed,
tentatively named "Ditto" and "Son of". : )
I've got pictures of that one that I'll share once I get "a round tuit"
along with the others. It's my personal opinion that it's the most
GORGEOUS thing I've ever done so I MUST make sure EVERYONE knows it! <BG>
I need to take more pics of my last year's efforts as well but the weather
isn't cooperating. If it's not raining (like now) the wind is blowing and
just when I've got a quilt clamped to my fence with the binder clips and I
think I can get it to smile (say Parmesano!) it flops over the fence so
it's hanging backing side out on my neighbor's side of the fence. GRRRRR.
