I am going to also use some of the craft ideas with DD (2.5), so I
anticipate the new kitchen ending thoroughly trashed some days, but I
really don't mind. The important thing is for them to have fun and be
creative!! I told DS that is he wanted to have a rock collection,
great...then suggested that he might want to use the different rocks to
make pictures, or he could paint them, or whatever...he's still thinking
about it.
Another thing I thought of was marble painting - drop a marble into a
small amount of poster paint, place a sheet of paper in a deep (at least
1") box lid, spoon out marble onto the paper and tilt lid to get
differen designs - multiple colors can be used....
wahoo!! great ideas coming, please don't stop!!
Larisa, who is giving serious thought to the quilt blocks from the
stories he will read this summer - he's currently caught up in "The
Magic TreeHouse" series (thanks mom!!). I bet he would love to make
blocks from the different ones we have read to him - he is starting to
read some of them to us now <grin>.
How about making useful items for outdoors, like bird houses or bird
baths. For my church fair one year I made a dozen bird baths and they
sold out immediately. Buy a terracotta flower pot with a matching
"glazed" drip plate. Decorate the pot with rub on decals or paint. Seal
the pot with outdoor mod podge or terracotta pot sealer. Turn the pot
upside down and secure the plate on top with green florist sticky stuff
(I don't remember what this is called), or glue it down. Fill with water
and place in the garden. The whole bird bath is about a foot high but
it could vary by the size of the flower pot. You must use a glazed drip
plate or it won't hold water.
Or just fill a glazed drip pan with lots of clean pebbles, water, and a
large flat rock in the center for butterflies to sunbathe on or drink
from.
We've also decorated fist sized smooth rocks with rub on stencils of
bugs and butterflies to place around the garden, they should be sealed
with mod podge or spray sealant. I think they would make cute grandma
gifts.
Buy a package of catnip seeds and plant them outside, in the fall dry
the catnip then make mice from your scrap bin and fill with catnip. If
you can't plant outside, just buy a package of it at Wal-Mart and sew
into mice. Also cute gifts.
Go online and find recipe for home made dog biscuits. Really easy to
make and bake and wrap in a scrap material "ribbon" to give to friends
with pups.
Take a walk around your area and identify a few trees or plants, then
find them in a tree and plant ID book. Don't tell your son that you did
this, then show him the pics in the book you'd like him to find and take
him for a walk in the same area. He will be very excited when he finds
the tree or leaves or plant. Try to find and identify Poison Ivy. This
is one activity my son absolutely loved and still does to this day. His
degree is in Environmental Conservation, and he has taken many herbalism
classes also. Maybe your son could explore nature with a notepad and
draw a little picture of each thing he has learned to ID. Pressing
herbs, flowers and leaves is fun too.
Gee, it makes me wish I had a little kid to go exploring with again. My
closest niece isn't even one yet, but her time is coming.

Another one that is quick & fun is the Kleenex holders, I made one with
Dustin, with pieces that were already cut up, and it only took him 10
minutes to make a super cool Kleenex holder!
I also did the rock candy experiment with the boys, it was fun to check the
progress out every day!
lastly, I bought the little flower kits at Target at the Dollar spot (or
whatever it is called)
they included a pellet that when put in water becomes a bunch of soil,
seeds, and a darn cute tiny flower pot. DS could even decorate the flower
pot with paint....anyways, I hope you guys have lots of fun.
keep us posted
hugs,
Teri

Also, remember to go to the library, especially for story telling time!
look out at your local bookstores to see if they have kids events also.
Lemonade stands are fun also!!!
