Howdy!
Well, Shake it up, Baby....
Twist & Shout.....!!!!!!!!!
Sent the hand-quilted Broken Star quilt off to my mom, today.
This is a 3-generation effort, which I've mentioned before...but still
going to mention again. ;-)
My mom bought this quilt kit several years ago, the one w/ the
cotton Percale! fabric. She started piecing it, got hung up on the
instructions, so she sent it to one of her aunts in Illinois (Mom lives
in s. Tx., down by Carolyn-in-Harlingen). My great aunt, Carrie Mae
McCorkle, finished piecing it in 1986. It's beautiful, 3 shades of
blue. The Broken Star is a stunning pattern!!
So, anyway, this February, my mom mentioned to me that she
had it, and had found someone to big-machine quilt it, but she
didn't really want to do that......I am such a sucker: "Send it to me,
I'll quilt it." She made me promise to send it back to her,
so, I got the top, supplied batt and backing fabric, and hand-quilted
this beautiful top which became that d@mn thing before I was finished <g>:
it's just difficult to hand-quilt cotton percale; think of the difference
between
quilting muslin and quilting your bedsheets!!
Anyway, it's quilted. When Carolyn-from-Harlingen was here, she
quilted some of it, to try out hand-quilting w/ a hoop (she's a natural!).
Took pictures, wrote on the back of the quilt all the details of its
making,
put it into a plastic bag, & off it went to Mom. I know she'll love it.
The guys here didn't want me to send it...but Mom knows where I live,
and she would come after it;
do we really want my Mad Mom up here, guys?
I also have specified that this beauty comes back to me when
Mom's done w/ it. ;-) Got my name on it.
The best part, tho', is that this has been a family effort. Aunt
Carrie Mae died several years ago, but her sisters (my grandma and
Aunt Leola) are still in Illinois, & will receive pictures. We're a
family
of quilters. I love that!
Thanks for listening, folks.
Ragmop (finished a couple of baby quilts, some crafts projects,
and started another quilt since I started quilting
the Broken Star)

Love that family project! Someday I'll finish the quilt top my grandmother
made me when I was a baby...she hand-pieced the top (in a pattern of her own
design I've not seen anywhere before, not even in those block collection
books), and sewed the borders on by machine with her 1920 Singer treadle
(which I also inherited).

Hi Ragmop!
The quilt sounds like a beauty! Any chance we'll get a look at one of those
pictures you took? I would have wanted to keep it too, if I were you, but
Ragma doesn't sound like someone I'd want comin' after me!! :-)) Big ol'
T&S happy dance coming your way from rainy KY! Shake it up, Baby now.....

Sound great Ragmop.... I'd love to have a family of quilters but I am the
first.

Now that I think about it, my mom, who is very creative (drawing, painting,
dried flower compositions, embroidery), used to piece scraps together to make
bed coverings, but she never quilted them.

Maybe that's where I got it from after all!

I made one of those for my bed when I was like 16, all hand sewn because we
never had a sewing machine- not because I was born in a third world country,
mind me, we had a reasonable income, it is that my mom didn't think it was
necessary, like the automatic washer, or the microwave... or the TV (they
finally got one when my brother turned 12 and I thank them for that because as
a result I read a lot)

Yeah, my folks are pretty unusual.. and me too, I guess

Ragmop, what an absolute gift to each of you. My most treasured gift is
one made by my great aunt. The quilt graces my bed and the memories it
brings in sleeping underneath it are incredible. And my daughter will get
the quilt when it is time to pass the blessing on (yep, she's already loudly
voiced her 'inheritance' of it.). Just thinking how grateful I am to have
quilting as a part of my life. Pat
