I'm guessing this is a ring of say 6 chain sts, slip st'd closed, and then you
are told to make a number greater than 6 other stitches around the ring?
Crochet as you normally would, except instead of sticking the hook thru a
specific chain, just go thru the ring, picking up the first loop and finish the
stitch as you usually would. Basically you are doing regular stitches, other
than you are thrusting the hook thru the ring, rather than thru a previous
stitch.
I hope this makes sense!

They're both worked the same. Treat the chain stitched ring just as you
would a plastic ring.
Thread held out at the back of the ring. Put the hook through the ring
(front to back). Yarn over. Pull through to the front and top of the
ring. Yarn over and pull through both loops for a single crochet -
which is the usual coarse for the first row.
Continue the number of times as directed by pattern. Or, if filling a
plastic ring, keep single crocheting until the ring is full.
If you didn't understand this, ask again. :-)
