I'm looking for counted cross stitch graphs and or kits that are related
to Catholicism. These could be on the sacraments, saints, popes, the
Vatican etc. I would appreciate any sources anyone could give me.
Thanks, Melissa in South Carolina

erm, my second posting of the day (:=

I have a book of patterns - the Omnibook of Inspirations (I think)
- it's an omnibook of something, anyway. It has *loads* of
religion-related projects in it....including the last supper,
Lord's Prayer, and many many more stitched prayers. I will take
another look at the book over the weekend if you like and send you
more details of the particular things in it. I believe I saw some
stuff relating to Catholicism, because I'm sure there's some
pictures of the Virgin Mary in it...

Let me know if you want details of how to buy - like ISBN, or
whatever..(I'm pretty sure it's a US publication, because the
price printed on the front was in dollars (:=

Through the help of another rctn'r (thanks Beth!) I was able to
purchase 'Our Lady of Fatima" and "Our Lady of Guadalupe". Both are
lovely -- the charts are by Morning Star Designs, 2207 Concord Pike
#393, Wilmington DE 19803, phone 302-529-1118.

You can order them yourself or through you local shop (I ordered
through my shop and they were very quick to fill the order).

Melissa, I don't have anything or remember seeing anything specifically
Catholic, but there are a lot of Christian designs out there that should
be acceptable to Catholics - a lot of biblical quotes, etc. I know
there's a stained glass design - Cathedral something, I think - that has
the Virgin and Child that looks Catholic. I have a "Lord's Prayer
Sampler" that has a lot of traditional Christian symbols (some on the
sampler, and 15 small designs appropriate for ornaments, all done in
shades of gold and blending filament). The designs are familiar to me as
Catholic symbols (IHS, Alpha and Omega, Chi Rho, Lamb of God, Cross and
Lily, lots of crosses, Holy Spirit as Dove, etc.), but I think many
Protestant denominations also use these symbols. The version of the
Lord's Prayer is the one I was taught, except that it says "Which art in
Heaven," where I learned "Who art in Heaven," which would be easy to
change, if you wanted to. The chart is put out by "Margaret & Margaret
Inc." and designed by Margaret McKee. Their address is 19 Hillside Drive,
Covington, KY 41015. I know I've seen a chart they put out which is all
different cross ornaments, done in colors and blending filaments, and I
think they also have a chart which is all Christian symbols. According
to the back of my chart, they also have other charts with names that seem
like they would be Christian-themed: Doxology, Many mansions, Good
Shepherd, etc. If you find any specific Catholic designs, please post the
information, because I'd be interested in them, as well. One of my
friends just entered the seminary, and we're all looking for good gift
ideas for him.

Melissa,
I've got books with small designs that can be used on vestmensts, linenes
and stole. there are various cross and symbols, but nothing bigger.

I would also be interested in some of the ones you are looking for.

I did recently see a pattern of Madonna and child in the Eastern tradtion
style, but I don't have and info on the compnay or designer.

Check out http://www.gostitch.com/

Click on 'Cross Stitch Leaflets', and they have a section on
Religion, with many nice charts (including the Last Supper).

Melissa:

Was at my favorite needlework shop the other night and saw a pattern by
La Broderie that made think of your message. It is called Cross and Crown.
While it is not a classic pattern which your mail message seemed to
indicate,it did catch my attention. It is a band sampler that includes a
saying about a priest, bishop and king and how the all benefit from the
stitcher needle.

There is also a pattern that I picked up about 3 years ago in Pennsylvania
that simply says "Holy, Holy, Holy", done in the old fashioned Fraktur
(old German) lettering. If you are interested in details - designer and
company (The designer is from Lancaster PA.) - I can "dig it out".

At the moment I'm charting a band sampler to be given as a gift to a
young friend when she graduates from high school. I'd like to include a
Bible verse or a traditional sampler verse on it, but I'd like to be
something special to the young lady (who is Catholic). Does anyone have
any suggestions for verses dealing with the Virgin Mary, or perhaps
common prayers of intercession or something like that? I'm generic
Protestant, so this is out of my usual realm of knowledge, and I'd
appreciate some suggestions. Thanks,

the Magnificat - there are some great verses in there.

"My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord and my spirit exults in
God, my savior."

Mary says this in response to being chosen to bear God's Son.

Someone will have to help out with the proper reference.

I instantly thought of the Magnificat also, before I even saw
Kristin's answer. I've loved it ever since I was a little girl in
Catholic school (40 years ago, egads!) -- beautiful language,
beautiful thoughts!

For the record, the words I learned are "My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour". Kristin's version is
probably from a newer version of the bible :-) -- sounds more like
language one would use today -- but the one I learned shows the origin
of the name "Magnificat".

As I recall, it goes on something like "For He Who is mighty has done
great things for me, and holy is His name. And His mercy is from
generation to generation, to them who fear Him." Etc. -- memory gets
fuzzy; I should look it up!

Actually, I should note that the more obvious and common prayer that
certainly fits your request is the "Hail Mary" -- an everyday Catholic
prayer:

Hail Mary, full of grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners,
Now, and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Chris

Kristin, that's a wonderful suggestion. The magnificat can be found in
the Gospel of Luke chapter 1 verses 46-55.>
