In southern New Jersey, Michael's is known as "Craft & Floral Warehouse"
with mostly hardlines of crafts and some softlines.

Just pulled the Michaels' ad out of the pile of old newspapers awaiting
recycling. It lists no fewer than twenty Michaels' stores in the greater
bay area. None of them, unfortunately, in San Francisco proper.
However, they do give an 800 number, "for nearest location and store
hours, call 1-800-MICHAELS (1-800-642-4235)."
Maybe they could help?
Welcome to the Bay Area! Sorry I can't help you with SF stuff, but this might help - it's from an email I got
when asking about needlework shops:
>> Then, there is my favorite, The Running Stitch, in Cupertino. It's on
>> Steven's Creek Blvd. (Take the 85 south exit off of 280) 20670 Steven's
>> Creek Blvd. Turn to the left and go about 6 blocks. The shop is
>> difficult to see, since it's around the corner and hidden from the street.
>> There is a big chain store, I think a Mervyn's and it's in that strip mall
>> which is on the right. She usually has a wide variety of both fiber and
>> fabric. Huge selection of charts. Carries supplies for both cross stitch
>> and needlepoint. Their telephone number is 408-257-2720
I know there is a Michaels in Pleasant Hill (in the East Bay - kind of near Sunvalley Mall in Concord) - so
there should be one somewhere near you. Have you checked the phone books from Daly City or further down the
peninsula?
Please let me know if there is anything more I can help with. I've been a Bay Area resident for all my life
(31+ years).

Just a minor correction it's the Running Thread....and I agree it is
a very nice store. The people are friendly and helpful. Another store
that is in Sunnyvale behind McWhorter's at the corner of El Camino and
Sunnyvale-Saratoga Rd. is Carolea's Knitche. She has a variety of
canvas, floss and charts. Those are the only 2 stores that I frequent.
There is another in San Jose on Los Gatos Blvd called The Markings but I
don't go there much...out of my way. But for you travelling fom
Concord....Cupertino is quite a ways....do you work down this way?
take care,

Keep looking in the phone book, and try some of the outlying cities.
You may to drive a bit. If there are no big stores in SF, there are
certainally many in the rest of the Bay Area. I know for a fact that
there is a Ben Franklin's in San Rafael, and TWO Michaels in Fremont.
Micheline Beeson
"Blesses are those who can laugh at themselves, for they shall always be amused."
The 415 area code also includes a large section of Marin county, north
of the City (that's where you go when you drive north across the Golden
Gate Bridge :-) 510 is the area code for the East Bay, including
Berkeley and Oakland (you drive across the Bay Bridge to get to the East
Bay--did you know there are TWO beautiful bridges in San Francisco?
:-)). I don't shop at chain stores over there, but they probably have
their share.
The closest Michael's that I know of is the one in San Mateo, south of
the City and near the San Mateo Bridge, where highways 92 and 101 meet.
There may be another one in Marin, however. New York Fabrics is another
large chain that has mostly fabric but also has some needlework items
like floss, their closest store in in Colma, south of SF (but closer
than San Mateo). Hancock's is the third large chain in the area, but
the only one I have visited is very far south in Santa Clara--an hour's
drive from SF. Again, there may be a Hancock's in Marin. It is similar
to New York Fabrics, mostly fabric with notions and a few needlework items.
There are small stores that have some needlework supplies in the City,
but the large chains are outside the City. Rents are just too high in SF
itself. But heck, who wants to shop at large chain stores anyway! :-)
If you want the names of small but wonderful needlework shops on the
Peninsula, let me know :-)

Hi, Suzanne, and welcome to San Francisco!
The nearest Michael's to SF is on Delaware St. in San Mateo. You take
Hiway 92 west from Hiway 101 South, then take the Delaware St. exit,
which literally lands you in the Michael's parking lot. It takes about
half an hour to get there from SF, but you may find other things that
interest you in the area. The San Mateo County Expo Center (read
fairground) is a few blocks down Delaware and often has interesting
exhibits, craft shows, etc. on weekends.
There is a New York Fabrics (related to JoAnne's) in the Metro Center
in Colma.
I have been told there is a needlework shop near Union Square, but I
don't get downtown much.
The Hobby Co. is two stores on Geary Blvd and about 16th Ave. The
needlework shop is small but worth checking. The main store can
probably supply any other craft vice you & yours may have ( I get
dollhouse stuff there)
If I think of anything else I'll let you know.

You forgot about House of Fabrics in Westlake.

Right, thanks,Denise! Also, I just thought of YarnCrafter at Tanforan
Mall. (Sneath Lane exit from Hwy 280, corner of Sneath Lane and El
Camino Real, San Bruno) They have a bunch of stuff in there, though
I don't go there often.

My favorite store!
Denise
For fibers, go to Straw Into Gold, in Berkeley (on San Pablo, as I remember).
You won't believe your eyes! I couldn't decide if I was in heaven (oh, so many
absolutely wonderful yarns, threads, books, tools) or hell (oh, I can't even
begin to afford all the things I have to get). I don't remember any silk
ribbon, but lots of other stuff, including perle cotton (in several weights and
bazillion colors) by the ounce. Check it out.
Robin P. pan...@clp2.clpgh.org
there really isn't much....
However...the Needlepoint Inc. store on Union Square is
wonderful...expensive...but full of great supplies and kits....
there will soon be a Pearls craft supply on Market street between Fifth and
Sixth...if it's like the one in Boston, I'll be in "Hog Heaven"....

Can't help with craft shops, but I can help with that other necessity to
proper stitching - CHOCOLATE.
Living in San Francisco you have access to the best boxed chocolates in
the country (if not the world) -- See's Candies. I know they have a shop
at San Francisco International Airport, and I'm sure they have some others
in that area. Do buy a box of them. I particularly recommend their milk
chocolate bordeaux. Get a nice 2-lb box assortment of milk chocolates
with different fillings. You'll never be able to eat Russell Stovers
again!
I just brought a 1-lb box home with me from Seattle.
I wish they would open some stores on the east coast, but I know they
wont' because they make the stuff in Culver City CA and it wouldn't be
fresh if they shipped it to stores out here. :( I guess I'll just have
to be content with mail order.
Regards,
Joe
I hate to tell you all what local phone book means in California....I once
ordered a complete set of 415 yellow pages (that was before the 415/510)
split...there were 10 books plus you still needed the 708 North bay) and
707(South bay)books. There are more now. This is a VERY B I G place. Now you
need the books from 510(East Bay) and there are a bunch of them. Even where I
live I get two sets from PacBell as we are in an area that is very confusing. I
feel very sorry for small shops as the yellow pages are your best advertizing
spots and expensive and to get good coverage around here it must be a goodly
percentage of the national debt to pay for the ads. The book for San Francisco
covers just The City. You need the books for all the penisula cities.
There are a lot of good craft stores here but when one is asking for places
you have to be very specific as to location. You can rack up a lot of mileage
trying to find some of these places!
;-)!!!

Actually, they make the chocolate near the airport, too. The factory is
on El Camino Real and Spruce, in South San Francisco. My husband's aunt
used to work there and bring home free samples. Too bad I didn't know him
before she left.

Also, I thought it neat when I saw a See's store in the City; then I saw
another; then, I found one in the shopping center near me; in the mall;
etc., etc. They're all over the place!! So far, I've only eaten a 1lb.
box during the past month. And, I've started running again. Yes, there is
a correlation between the two. (And I don't mean running to the nearest
See's store, either!).
Thanks for all your input about SF!

I visit South San Francisco yearly, and there is a store called New York
Fabrics which carries craft materials including crosstitch patterns and
Aida. Hope this Helps.
