Through the ANG-list I've learned about a wonderful exhibit of Chinese
embroidery at the University of California at Los Angeles, in the Fowler
Museum. Peg has given me permission to post her message here:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Fowler Museum at UCLA has an exhibit of the Threads of
Light - Chinese embroidery from Suzhou - those who made the "double
sided
embroidery" famous. They have expanded from the traditional long and
short,
laid side by side stitches to 40 different ones - including "random
stitch
technique". The first room includes their SERI institute stitchers
pieces -
including as you walk in a double sided silk gauze stitchery of
butterflies
about 4' high by 5' long, practice pieces showing the efeect of stitch
direction on 3 apples, a hand with many, many overlays of color. The
2nd
room contains the photographs of Robert Glen Ketchum, nationally
acclaimed
photographer, with the silk pieces interpreting his works. These are
breathtaking, with the silk embroidery reflecting the light and the
effect of pines in the fog with dew drops on their leaves. This exhibit
cannot be described but it is not to be missed. It is here in Los
Angeles
until September 5 and will go back to Suzhou - not to be shown elsewhere
in
the US. If you get out here this summer, do plan to go. It is open
Wed -
Sun from noon to 5pm , Thursday until 8, closed Mon and Tues. Admission
is
free and parking is $5. It is off Sunset Blvd, north end of UCLA
campus, at
Royce Drive - parking lots 4 and 5. Need more info ? e-mail me
privately.
