I keep reading about something called blocking. What is this? Why is it
done? And how fdo you do it?

Blocking is basically squaring things up. If you work with canvas in a hoop or
by hand it will distort out of true - and so you need to block it to return it
to it's original squareness.
Usually it's done by spraying lightly with water, stretching and pinning it
onto a board to get it back square. Leave it to dry and it should be OK. If
it's badly out of line then probably professional help would be needed via a
professional framer - (they have all the gizmos to do it with)
Many books will have a section on how to do this, usually to be found under
finishing techniques.
