The dictionary defines 'ecru' as the colour of unbleached linen.
However there are also brownish linens sold under names such as
'natural' and 'raw linen'. So when a design calls for unbleached linen
what colour is the right one?

Very good question. Wish I knew the answer.

Well,
The unbleached, unspun raw flaw that I have here at the house (it was my
great-grandmother's!) is a lovely color (DMC 612 is REAL close to the color
of what I managed to hand spin). Though it varies a couple of shades lighter
and darker then that within the lot I have. I noticed that flax that is Not
as old as mine is more of a silvery gray color, though since I don't have
any of that here - I can't compare it to the DMC for a better color match
<G>.
When I got this flax from my mom, She wondered why anyone would keep a
whole barrel of human hair! (it does look like a whole clan of blondes lost
their hair into the raw flaw bundles <VBG>.

Forgot to mention in my previous post , that
in Belgium they told us that there were several kinds of Flax=Linen, and
that color [ Cream White To Beige]is determined also by maturity of the
crop , the water in which it was Retted , ans such ` small` facts. mirjam

My best guess would be the natural or raw linen colors. The color of
unbleached flax, the fiber from which linen thread is spun, depends on a lot
of variables like soil conditions, weather, and how the fibers were
processed, bleaching being one of the final steps, but generally, unbleached
(natural or raw) linen would be darker than what is usually labeled as ecru.
Maybe the best thing to do (if possible) is pull the threads you'll be
stitching with and see how they look with the fabric choices you have.

HTH a little.

The color is mostly determined by something we call
ÿffffb4rÿfffff6tning' in swedish. The ecologically grown linen I work
with has a color that varies from golden yellow to shiney
grey. The linen is grown here in Finland (were I also live)
in the regions of Vasa. The company I work for is named: Oy
Nordic Carding Ltd Ab. I'm carding and combing the linen
which is sent to us. If you wish I can send you some
samples of unbleached linen or I can scan them in to my
computer and send you the pictures.

I would love if it could you could send some images or a sample. You
can contact me at murr...@spirit.com.au. I tried your email address,
but it doesn't appear to be valid.

Many thanks for your help, and to everyone else for their very helpful
