Today I receive an invitation to join the Historic Needlework Guild,
which was founded by Debbie Novak the former editor of Cross Stitch
Sampler. I would be interested in joining but was wondering if
anyone out there was already a member and whether or not they were
satisfied with the newsletter and projects offered.

For those of you who haven't heard of this group, the invitation says
that the newsletter features needlework techniques such as: cross
stitch, samplers, reticella, stumpwork, whitework, tambour, crewel,
pulled thread, drawn thread and more. Also some of the designers are
the same as those from CSS: C.A. Wells, Linda Barry, and Barbara
Jackson. Other benefits are: opportunity to attend seminars in the
US and abroad to study, visit and learn more about historic
needlework. Also special pricing on fabric, books, kits and fibers
offered through the newsletter to reproduce historic pieces.
Opportunity to purchase limited edition kits and designs from the
Guild. Annual membership is $25 a year or $45 for two years. The
newsletter is 16 pages long and comes out 4 times a year (June,
September, December, and March). Apparentely $1 from each membership
fee is donated to a designated museum or historic site. The ssite for
1996 is Historic Deerfield in Deerfield, MA.

The address is:
Historic Needlework Guild
P.O. Box 718
Ingomar, Pa 15127

This is a new venture, just starting out. I could be wrong, but I don't
believe the first newsletter has yet been published.

This is my impression also, and Debbie had started signing up people to
be on a mailing list for this new venture last year at the Austin SoCS.
It sounds like it could be a nice venture - I always did enjoy CSS
magazine, and Debbie does a nice Sampler Gathering weekend in the
Brandywine valley area twice a year (sometimes in PA, and sometines in
DE). I'm n the mailing list for this, too, and if you write to the
address that Sandy indicated in her original post, Debbie will send you
the news about both the gathering events, as well as the "guild newsletter".

Thanks bunches for posting about this, Sandra. Let us know what the
newsletter is like when you get your first copy.

Sorry, everyone, but I haven't decided whether or not to subscribe
yet, $25 is a lot for just 4 newsletters, even though it does have
designs by Linda Barry, Barbara Jackson, etc. I am very tempted but
my husband and I are buying a house, so we are really being tight with
our budget. I may try and subscribe next month but will have to wait
and see. If I do subscribe I will be happy to let everyone know.

I do know that someone who reads the newsgroup e-mailed me to say
she/he had subscribed to the guild. The email address didn't give a
full name so I don't know who it was and I didn't recognize the alias.
It might have been a lurker. Maybe they would be kind enough to
share with us when they get their first newsletter.
