I don't use a database, I just use a spreadsheet, but the idea is the same. My
spreadsheet is a simple Lotus 123 worksheet with the following columns:

1. A small column in which I place an "X" if I have made the pattern.
2. The publisher (a lot of my patterns are from magazines)
3. The volume/issue number/date
4. The type of pattern (e.g., afghan, doily, etc.)
5. The type of yarn or thread needed (e.g., Thread - 10, WW, etc.)
6. The number of colors needed
7. Any notes about the pattern (in this field I put related patterns - e.g., if

the pattern for a dishcloth was published as part of a kitchen set, I might
right see also placemat, coaster, napkin ring)

I sort the spreadsheet first by pattern type, then by type of yarn, then by
name. I have found that this system works really well for me. I found that
without it, I would be sorting through all of my magazines never able to find
the specific pattern I wanted.

While I'm on the subject of spreadsheets, I also have other spreadsheets that
are tabs behind the pattern index. I have one for Exchanges, one for other
projects and gifts, and one where I keep track of yarn costs in different mail
order catalogs (I don't have a source for non-specialty yarns near me).

On these, I keep track of any notes I have about specific patterns, the dates I

made the pattern, the yarn and colors I used, the hook, and the person that I
gave it to.

So maybe I'm anal about some things...:)
