I am sitting here, plotting. I think I can turn out a quite nice dololly using
one of those needlethreaders that we all have and can never find, plus some of
my EXTENSIVE beading stash...

Ok, I'm gonna try. If I'm wildly successful, I'll blow my horn all over the
n/g. If not, I'll humbly order one of the overpriced ones and sit quietly
by...

How is dololly pronounced? Is is dew-lolly or dough-lolly? Something
else? How about the lolly part? lolly as in lollypop or as in lowly?

I was told dew-lolly(pop).

dough, and yes, lollypop.

someone mentioned using needle threaders? The wire is probably too
fine. Let us know if you find a brand that makes it work, though. :-)

I used the cheapo one that comes in the cheapo pack o'needles from TSWLTH, and
it worked fine. I think anything much thicker wouldn't go through my teeny
tiny stitches!!

My DH made me two. One for cross stitch and one for tapestry.
He turned up two wooden handles and glued needles in at the point end.
A small needle for the cross stitch and a larger needle for the
tapestry.

Can email a picture if anyone wants it.

So, how do you use those? Do you have to thread the needle eye with the thread
you're trying to drag back?

You insert the needle eye under the stitches that you are going to draw
the thread. Then put the loose thread through the needle eye and pull it
back. If it is very short thread end a needle threader can be employed
in getting it through the needle eye.

One thing that sort of gets me is the pronunciation. Personally I say
DO-lolly but I've heard a lot of do-LOLly recently. Can anyone from
the American South (where supposedly this term originated) help?

OK, that's what I thought. I don't get why, if the thread is long enough to
get into a needle, one wouldn't just use a needle. And, the needle threader is
so icky looking, I like using the one I did with the purty beads....

LOL...ok, different strokes, obviously!

Because it might not be long enough to make the "turn" for the needle.
With the design just mentioned it just pulls back through.

What a great idea!

Lara who is all thumbs and toes trying to use her new DoLolly - but it is pretty

I dunno...I think if it was that short, I couldn't get it threaded to begin
with! I like the little "wire" that I have on mine, cause I just thread it
through, swoop up the thread and yank...

Alison,

I have only heard it referred to as the DEW lolly (as in pop) here in
Southeast TX. Guess it is related to the dohickey (which is pronounced DEW
hickey) thing that I grew up with it. <G>

Cheers, Pam

I just put my needle under the necessary stitches and then thread it.
However, it is difficult to pull the needle through under these
conditions if you're using a frame/hoop.
