Hi everyone

Just wanted to see if there were any others currently working on the
"Earthdancer" design. I've only just begun this one and can't put it
down (except to read the newgroup of course!!). I'm a bit nervous about
the beading on it though, haven't done that before.

I started beading recently - and it's really not that hard at all, a
few tips...

You may prefer to wash your project before beading, some beads don't
take well to washing.

I have tried two methods for stitching and prefer this one:

using two strands of thread - colour matching the beads so as to blend
in, stitch through the hole in the bead. Then come back up where you
started the first stitch and this time stich around the bead - so that
one strand lies on either sidfe of the bead. This helps it stand up
better. - well so I read somewhere and it seems that way to me when I
compared it to the through the middle only method.

>Perth,

How's thta cold weather going? I heard on the radio that you had the
coldest day on record? We have had rain rain and for a change more
rain. Which, of course, means more time inside stitching or reading
this NG!

Hi Michelle

Thanks for the advice on the beading. I'm so happy with this project
that I sat up till 2:30 this morning stitching!! Needless to say, I
have a sore neck and shoulders right now but can't wait to pick it up
again. Addicted totally! You mentioned the weather in Perth going down
to an all time low. That was quite funny for me because I've just moved
here from Tasmania so it was no shock to my system, but you should have
heard everyone else, they couldn't stop talking about it. Whereabouts
in Aus are you?

Hi
Glad to see some others are working on this Earthdancer. You seem to all
be in Australia, and here I am doing my thing in Michigan. I too can;t
seem to put it down. I have wanted to do it ever since I saw it and then
when I found it in a local store I thought...FATE...now I have to do it.

I am hopng to get it done for my daughter, who is a native American
(adopted) for atleast Christmas.....I think she will like it.

How far are you? I have quite a lot of the head and hair done. Don't
know how she ever brushes all that hair.

Thanks for the advice on the beading, when I get there I will have it
licked...ha ha.

Well, what luck! I hadn't read rctn in a while because I was in a
stitching funk and it was too depressing but I recently returned from a 2
week "vacation" (2 weddings with way to much time sitting in the car in
btween to call it a real vacation) and now I'm all rejuvenated and
actually excited about stitching.

I'm almost done with the wedding gift for the "second" bride and groom and
for the "first" bride and groom (my sister and dh) I will be stitching
Earthdancer!

I gave them a stack of patterns to choose from for their gift and since he
is half chippewa I was 99% sure they would choose her when I put her in
the stack, but I wanted to give them the choice.

So now I'm hoping to trade tips with someone/anyone! For beads - I've
found the best way to keep them from tipping over is to use one strand of
thread and go through each bead twice making a cross (for me this works
better than using 2 strands going through the bead once and then "around"
the bead). Hopefully someone out there can give me input on the
ultrasuede issue:

from my "old rctn" days I remember reading about problems people had with
the ultrasuede "fringe" and when I picked up the pattern, my shop owner
told me to make sure I check with her if/when I do it because a lot people
have had problems with the fabric tearing, etc. and she actually
recommends using a perle cotton instead

Anyone out there who's actually worked with ultrusueade have any thoughts
they're willing to share?

Thanks! (and it's "nice" to see the bickering still going on - it feels
like "home")

Beth O. happy to be happy about stitching again

Earthdancer is a beautiful picture, I left the ultra suede until the very
last but it took no time at all to stitch. I didn't have any problems with
fabric tearing, I used a 28-ct evenweave and just pulled the ultra suede
through very gently. If you're worried about the tearing, maybe using
shorter lengths might make a difference? Although using the perle may make
it easier it really wouldn't have the same impact effect as the suede - the
fringing is the thing people comment on the most :)

Nicola,

I did Earthdancer a couple of years ago and had no trouble at all with
the suede either. It just looks soooo good with the suede. You just
need to take it slow and easy. It is worth the effort. Trust us on
this one.

Beth,

I did Earthdancer when she first came out. I had no trouble with the ultra
suede. I was very careful to keep the tension loose and kept the ultra
suede from twisting. It took some time, but the results are well worth it.
Perle Cotton would just NOT do the trick.

Only one thing I would change if I were to do it again: I normally work in
hand, but I believe I would put Earthdancer in a frame to do the dream
catcher and possibly even the fringe on her dress. It was very hard to keep
the tension loose enough so that when the fabric was stretched in framing,
there wouldn't be a little hole were the thread came through, and also keep
it tight enough so that when it was framed the thread wouldn't sag. Mine
turned out pretty well. I do have a few holes where the Ultra Suede and
Bravo come through the fabric, but they are so small no one notices but me.

Deffinately go for the Ultra Suede!

SNIP (stuff from a few of us about suede and Earthdancer)

suggestions:

1. take your time
2. make sure that the suede lies flat (did I use the correct one? it is
"lay"? or "lie"?)

conclusion:
Earthdancer is beautiful.

Hi Lisa

I'm currently working on the Earthdancer for my sister. I'm almost
finished, but still trying to decide to do an over one face & hands or
not. I'm also going to stitch on real porcupine quills instead of the
white suede. The only challenge is looking for the road
kill and extracting the quills. I've seen quills used and it is really
breathtaking.

Thank you everyone for your Earthdancer advice and hints. I feel much
more confident about it now. I'm about 1/3 of the way through and can
hardly wait for my stitching time each day as she is so beautiful. I
know this one is special because I've found I havn't touched my other
UFO's (that I usually rotate) since I started her!

Kathy,

How do you attach the quills to the fabric? I've never seen a
porcupine quill that wasn't still firmly attached to a porcupine so I
don't know anything about their shape except the "long and sharp"
part. Are they hollow, so you can run thread through them? How do you
do it?

I, too am working on Earthdancer, my first (ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHH) on Linen,
and it is lovely. Most of the stitching is done, and I have come upon a
workable way to get the beads on where I do not think they are too floppy.
I did not like the yellow "conchos" on the shoes and skirt, so went to
several stores to shop for tiny shiels, rounds, conchos to glue or sew on,
have beads on strings down from them.
I, too was not too happy about the white fringe, and had not decided what
to do about it. I have some white thin leather I was going to cut in
thinner strips, but DH thought you ladies had a great idea about quills.
To get them off yourself, dog, etc, Mother Earth mag years ago said to cut
the end off, releasing the air in them, and pull out easily as they were
now deflated. Means they must be basically hollow to begin with--also a
good way to harvest from the "road-kill" donor. I figure a good 200 for
fringe use per Earth and Spirit dancer, maybe some to hang from the
feathers and gourds.
No prior experience with quill harvesting or donors, but we plan on
harvesting roadside---- box, pliers, tweezers, maybe scissors also in car
just in case.
Let me know if this will not work, but it sure beats the commercial
prices, and I really need thinner ones than for jewelry. Beading needles
or those long doll needles of the past should ream them out, sew them on.
Good hunting, fellow dancer fans
PS---had already done her face when I read about 1x1--but it is linen, has
any one done 1x1 and is it really different on this one--side view and
all. The hands will stay 2x2.

I plan on buying Earthdancer, but I have no idea why. I'm not really
"into" native american "stuff" and don't know anyone who is (at least
enough that I would make it for them), but something about the picture
grabs me & says "do it, do it, do it".
Does anyone else have this symptom - of wanting to do a project - just
because - without knowing who will end up with it??? I guess I could
donate it for a Friends of the Library auction or raffle. We do have
alot (OK-several) patrons who are of native american heritage & I know
many of them would probably love to own it but don't XS themselves.

Hi,

I know exactly how you feel. I generally go into Fantasy or Medieval
sorts of things, ala TW. However I just bought Earthdancer. I have
absolutely no idea what to do with it. I don't know anyone who uses
this theme in their houses. But it is gorgeous. Oh well I can always
look at the photo.

Yes, YES...Altho it wasn't the Earthdancer for me (picked her up for my DH
who likes American Indian themes, while I usually go for midieval/fantasy
stuff). I saw the Regency Angel at my local shop and before I knew what I
was doing I was walking out the door with her and I'm not one to stitch
angels.

An easier way to acquire quills might be through Tandy Leather stores. It
seems to me I've seen them advertised in their catalogs.

This happened to me too. I saw Earthdancer, and it *almost* got me. I
kept going back to look at it, but never quite got sucked into buying it.
Then one day I walked over to the L&L/BR/TIAG rack and picked up the chart
again and Behind it was Spiritdancer, and it just *spoke* to me. I ended
up buying the chart and the material, went back when I had more money to
buy the fibers and notions, and then went back and bought the 17" Q-snap
frame (I'm still going to have to move it once). Now I just have to get
up the courage to start it.

BTW, when I finally earned my free credit at the store, I went back and
bought Earthdancer after all (but none of the stuff for it yet)

I certainly have Earthdancer in my stash, but the one that got me was
Fairy Flora. Just had to stitch with those colors! At least I got a lot
of mileage out of the project; I loaned her to my local needlework shop
and she generated a lot of sales for them. (Larson Juhl's frame #X1386 is
what I framed her in...take a look anyone who has a framing decision on
this one.) This month, my sister will take the Fairy home with her, for I
think of my lovely sister, the fantasy reader, each time I look at Flora.

Lianne, what is the Regency Angel like? Who is the designer/publisher?

Oh, Yes!! Earthdancer was one of those for me. Absolutely no Native
American connection for me either down here in New Zealand. BTW have you
read the story that goes with Earthdancer on MLI's web site:

Nova, she's a tall, slender angel standing beside what looks like a
window. She has long hair and is wearing an empire style gown and wrap
done with a LOT of metallics. Publisher is MarBek and the designer is
Rebecca Waldrop.

The only thing that I'm not crazy about is the fabric that she is shown
on. Leaflet says that its Light Mocha Belfast linen. It just doesn't seem
like enough contrast to me.

Anyone have alternate suggestions for a background? She's done with a lot
of the 223/224 family and 924 thru 927 family colors.

Help! ;)

With those antique colors, I'd go for either cream, antique white or a
light pastel shade of pink. I happen to love the shades of mocha and light
mocha, but I can understand why you might feel those colors lack contrast.
The values of the threads and the fabric may be too close. So, lighten up
the fabric if you like. I would take the threads with me (or use the
store's skeins to avoid a mix-up) and put them on the fabric as I shopped.

I'm doing spiritdancer on the Prairie Grain linen recommended. I
don't have much creativity for choosing other colors than what's
