I've heard that there are a couple of database programs for keeping
track of cross stitch floss and charts, etc. Where can I download them
from and what do people recommend?

I have seen one at www.downloads.com called Floss Minder. I have not
downloaded it and used so beyond saying it is there, I can't help much.

Hi -
I recently went on a quest for just such a program.

As a needlework designer, I needed a program with maximum
flexibility (ie: tracking threads other than the "old standards")

The one I decided on was Cross Magic, which can be reached here:

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/ModelSystems/crossmagic.
htm

Because the URL is long, you might want to cut and paste it into
your browser, making sure that it ends in - .htm

I've been very happy with it although I'm trying to convince
them to tweake it a little bit and market a version for
Needlepointers! <g>

I have "Organized Expressions," which you can read about in considerable
detail at:

http://www.lns-software.com/needleworkers/

I like the inventory feature for threads and beads. Entering your stash is
very simple, and the program includes a wide variety of threads from 20-25
manufacturers. There is also a feature where you can type in the materials
you need for a new project (for example, the DMC floss numbers), and the
program will tell you what you have and what you don't. I had a printing
problem at first, but that was due to the weird colour scheme I was using on
my computer -- not to the software!

I tried using the charts/projects database, and found it too rigid (the
information categories weren't ones in which I was interested); so for
projects, I went back to a database I had created for myself in Microsoft
Access.

Someone else who posts in this newsgroup has tried Organized Expressions and
didn't care for it. But it meets my needs, as far as thread/bead inventory
is concerned. I looked at Cross Magic (mentioned by another poster) on the
Web, and that one looked pretty good, too.

I use CrossMagic. I've also got Organized Expressions, and don't care for
it as much. There's pros and cons to each, depending on what you want. For
me, I wanted something that would check my inventory against a chart's
thread requirements and give me a list of what I needed to purchase. The
version of OE I have didn't do that... but I have the first version of it,
so maybe it's been improved. Also, I don't like the fact that you have to
pay for each new update to OE, (such as the new DMC colours)... CrossMagic
allows you to modify your inventory and add any type of thread/bead/colour
that isn't already there. I think OE would do themselves some good if they
would offer a free demo version too.... I only paid $10 for my OE, I would
have been really disappointed if I'd paid the full price ($40 Cdn)
I believe others have already supplied the websites for both programs.

I would like to recommend Cross Magic - I use it myself and it is really
good and easy to use. And covers almost everything to do with stash!!! Very
handy

I am using CrossMagic and finding it very convenient. Unfortunately I
can't remember where I downloaded it from :/. I would imagine doing a
search with CrossMagic should get you there. I used the free demo
first to see if it would work for me then I registered it. So far am
very pleased with it. The only thing is, I can now see at a glance how
bad my UFO list is :).

Be very careful of CrossMagic. I paid for the program yesterday. Their
Read Me file states you will receive your registration code to unlock
the program within 24 hours. I still have not received it.

I ordered CrossMagic a couple of months ago and am very pleased with
it. It looks like you made the same mistake that I did, I ordered it on
a Friday evening here in the US and didn't get my registration code
until Sunday evening. It turns out that the guy that wrote CrossMagic
lives in New Zealand and doesn't sit at his computer 24 hours a day,
seven days a week, just waiting for orders to come in. For some strange
reason the guy wants weekends away from his office! :-) The time
difference between the US and New Zealand doesn't help either.

Anyway, don't worry, there are plenty of satisfied CrossMagic users here
in this newsgroup. I'm sure you will get your registration code soon.

Sarah.

Hi Michele,

I'm very sorry for the delay in getting your CrossMagic registration
code to you. Sarah was correct in saying that I normally can't process
registration orders over weekends (thanks, Sarah!), however I do keep an
eye on this newsgroup and that's how I saw your message. As soon as I
saw that you were concerned about the delay I jumped in my car and drove
around to the office so I could process your order; hopefully you should
now have your registraion code.

Once again, please accept my applogy for the delay. I will be taking
steps that should allow me to process orders from my home.

Kindest regards
Murray Moffatt

I have purchased soooo much stuff on the Internet over the past several years
that I NEVER EXPECT anything on weekends unless it's an automated service.

I downloaded your program the day before yesterday, and am just starting to use
it. The only things I've done so far is enter the information for one pattern,
and my floss - of which by putting them into this program I found out that I
didn't have near as much as I thought. I have a whole lot of duplicates, but I
am still missing 235 different colors :-( I just have to get to Beverly's
before their prices go up so I can get those 235.

So far your program has been very easy to use, so I'm sure that will be
registering it - by you posting this response to Michele, you have made me feel
VERY good about wanting to register it.

I got my code about 26 hours after. Not sure if they are just slow or
there are a lot of us registering at once :).

Hi Sherri,

I'm glad that you like CrossMagic so far, I look forward to receiving
your registration sometime soon!

I'm now all set up to process CrossMagic registrations from home, so
people that order over the weekend should get a better response from now
on. Unfortunately the registration process still relies on me manually
handling things, so if I go away for the weekend then people will still
have to wait for my return on Sunday evening. The company we use to
handle the actual order taking and credit card processing, DigiBuy, do
offer an automated service, but I'm a little bit scared of things going
wrong and me not knowing about it until people start complaining.

Murray

Hi Gussy,

I was slow, sorry! I normally average about 2 orders per week, and
since the orders normally arrive on a working day I can get a reply back
to the person within 10 or so hours. However this weekend I've received
four orders, so someone must have been talking to their friends about
CrossMagic! :-)

Hi Lisa-Marie,

Thank you for your kind words, I do try my best to provide a good
service because I know that many people get nervous when they order
things over the Internet. It's always nice when people notice this and
say nice things! :-)

Fortunately today's America's Cup race was postponed, otherwise I would
have been watching the race on TV and I would have missed Michele's
message.

I wasn't complaining honest, I was actually tickled pink it came that
fast. I'm loving the program, and moved it from one puter to another
with no problems. As I said in an earlier post the only problem is now
I can see at a glance exactly how many UFOs I have. My conscience is
actually pricking me now when I start looking at new charts :).

Seeing the service you provide makes me sorry that my sister just bought
me Organized Expressions as a gift. I would have preferred to deal with
you. Your dedication is amazing!

I was horrified when I saw this message by Michele - as I am another very
happy customer of Murrays.

I think the correct thing would have been to state that this, as far as you
knew, had only happened to you - but I guess with Murray replying to you
and all the other posters it proves that the service is exellent.

Glad to see that Crossmagic is getting overseas Murray.

I have read through the 21 previous messages in this thread and as a
result am considering registering Cross Magic.

First I have a question which might have an obvious answer to someone
else...

a while ago I was under the impression that I had a list (inc.
conversions) of all the DMC threads but apparently they bought out some
new ones - when one of the companies decides to do this will I be able
to get an update for Cross Magic?

Thanks in anticipation of all your help.

After having decided it would be too much work, I passed on this the first time
I looked a while ago, even though I thought it looked the best. After hearing
all of these posts and seeing how Murray cares and responds (on his day off!) I
just downloaded it and registered! Now here's my question, - how do you
recommend putting kits into the software? The rest is a given, but I have a
shelf full of kits and need them on there too. TIA!

I created a new Material Type called Extras. One of the many odd things I
have in there is Kit - Fabric and Threads. Also have things like Charm
Pack - All Charms; Thread Pack - All Specialty Threads. It's not so much for
a 'what to buy list', as for a 'what I already have' reminder, and for when
I don't want to create a whole new Material when I'll only ever have one of
that type. It's worked pretty well for me over the last 18 months.

When I have finished the kit (yeah, like that happens) I actually enter
thread, bead, etc. details if I can.
