Ok..don't laugh at me......this has got my dander up! I meticulously
wind my floss on plastic bobbins and keep them in numerical order in
plastic rectangular containers. Everything in its place...right?
hahaha
Ok...here's the trouble....how the heck do you label your bobbins?
(floss numbers)...I've tried Magic markers....self adhesive labels
(which dry up and fall off)...self made labels, taped with adhesive (dry
and fall off too)...Now, as you can guess I have several boxes
containing bobbins without their numbers...and a whole slew of labels
floating on the bottoms of these containers....God help me if I upset
them before relabelling. Any tips people?

What about either the Micro Pigma pens or the fine tip Sharpie? Both are
supposed to be permanent. You mentioned Magic markers but didn't say
what the problem was with those. HTH.

I've created my own self sticker and print them on the computer. The stickers
are so small that fits perfect between the two cut on the bobbins.

Here's an idea mentioned from a friend to cut the number for the floss wrapping
that already have the number and tape it onto your bobbin.

Faye,
I don't write on my bobbins at all because I found the same thing as you
- the ink rubs off. In some of my boxes, a lined chart was supplied for
me to write the number and color of each bobbin and in the smaller box
I just purchased, I made my own chart (no chart was supplied). I also
take the label of the floss and hold it with my finger on the bobbin and
then wrap the floss over it - this holds the label in place. For some
of the older versions of my floss the label is hidden but at least not
lost and will easily slide out if I need it to. I also have the chart
as back up. However, for the newer versions of floss, the label is very
long (in fact, I've had to cut it a little) and it allows the number to
stick out of the side very nicely so you can still see it.

HTH,
Nicole

I just write the floss number in ink in the corner. It has worked for me for
over 10 years. I don't have any that have faded or rubbed off.

I have two different methods:

First, I just used a Sharpie fine-point marker to mark the number and
brand on the end.

Second, I have cut the numbers off of the skeins and taped them to the
end with scotch tape. This method is easier to read, but the tape stops
sticking after a while. I am still working on this method.

I'm a newbie to the floss-storage thing, but I do like the bobbins. I
can never get the floss to come out right from the skeins and they get
all messed up.

LOL. If only I were that organized! Most of mine are labelled in the middle,
although some are labelled on the side. However, when I kit projects up,
bobbins, skeins, and spools all get merrily tossed into ziplock baggies, and
there's no careful picking of corners when I pull them out of *there*. :)

Hi Faye;
I too use the plastic bobbins and I have found using the little price
tag stickers you can buy at Staples or a like store glued to just the
corner works for me. I do replace the sticker everytime the bobbin is
emptied though so that may be why I've never had a problem with the
stickers coming loose. I cut those little stickers in half so only the
nubbin edge is covered.

I take the number from the skein, cut it down as close as i can, but still
leaving it in its circular "Wrap" shape and slip it over the end of the bobbin.
It is generally a very snug fit and I haven't had any fall off yet

I too, have had good luck with the extra fine point Sharpies. Sometimes, when
the bobbin is very nubby, I've used a piece of correction tape (yes, I still
use my typewriter!), and written on top of it.

I would not recommend the paint markers, Angela. I used them to decorate a
small bobbin box I was filling for my daughter, and they peeled right off!

I have found a great solution for this problem. Nordic Needle carries
wonderful little labels. They have all the DMC numbers printed on them and
they fit any bobbin or bag. The labels are so cheap (only a few bucks) that I
have bought a few sheets of these labels so I have some for my DMC colors that
I have double bobbins for. The labels have stuck on my plastic or cardboard
bobbins for years and haven't fallen off.
Just thought I would throw my two cents in.

Faye,

I use the same system and I use a Sharpie permanent marker directly on the
plastic bobbin. I keep one handy. If I notice the color start to fade, usually
when I use the bobbin, I refresh the number, It dries quickly and is relatively
permanent. I don't use the labels for the very reason you mention. Some one I
know suggested putting the DMC label thru the hole that you use for a bobbin
winder. I'd still be afraid of it coming off. HTH.

Why not take the professional route? Purchase some small (1/8 inch) metal
stamps or die set. Take a half day off from stitching. Use masking tape and
tape three of the dies tightly together in a row. IE. 6+0+4.
Using a small hammer, take the taped togther die set and PERMANENTLY stamp
a few bobbins with the same number, then proceed on to the next number that
you want. When you are done you could take any fine tip ball point pen and
fill in the number indentation. You can also fill in the indentation with
colored candle wax, just rub it across the number and it will fill it in,
rub off excess wax with finger, cloth can take wax with it. Beastly numbers
numbers like 666 will require three sets but they are cheap and last for
years.

Metal stamps or dies are used for punching numbers on to steel and are sharp
enough to do a nice job on plastic. Do not put the number (1) to close to
the edge of the bobbin or you may crack the bobbin if you hit it too hard.
Takes about two minutes to select the numbers and tape them together. You
could also tape on a bit of cardboard to make it easier to hold the dies
together and in line. Takes longer to tear everything apart after you find
that you have on number upside down.

Metal stamps or dies are available at most well stocked tool outlets. You
can buy a character set or a numeral set or both if you need to stamp DMC,
ANCHOR, J&C.

An alternative is to use an electric engraving tool. That is if you have a
steady enough hand.

Then again if you have already purchased everything that humans have ever
made and have money to burn take a thousand bobbins and you color chart down
to your local Trophy shop and have them engraved. They might even fill in
the numbers with a product called Monofill if you talk nice. You should get
a price break on quantity.

End of hassel.....

Don't backstitch to e-mail just stitchit.

I tape the number I have cut off the band to the bobbin. I put the tape on
vertically up over the end. The tape goes from middle over the number to the
middle on the back side. None have lossened. I also use Scotch brand.

I use the Sharpie fine point on my bobbins, both cardboard and
plastic, and they've never run. But I have heard others say theirs
did. There are different brands of the plastic bobbins, so that may
be a factor. But here's a suggestion:
AFter you mark the number, let it dry, and dab a bit of clear nail
polish over it before winding your floss.

What about making your own bobbins? You could design a basic bobbin
shape on a computer and include a space to write floss names/numbers.
You could duplicate the shape x number of times and insert a different
name/number on each before printing them out. I guess it depends on how
heavy a paper you could use in the printer, but you could always make a
'doubled' design that could be folded and glued after cutting it out.
You could also print out a page of them and not cut them out, but attach
a sample of the appropriate floss to each color and use it for a
reference chart at home or when shopping.

Hope this helps!

I can't help but think that you 'floss winding, bobbin labelers' would
have a lot more stitchin' time if you just popped the unopened skein of
floss into a snack size baggie. Cut the corner off for ventilation,
label them with easy to write on stickers and store them in shoe box
size containers! You also have a great place to store those usable
pieces that make bobbins look like colorful balls of spaghetti!

It is time for that debate again, isn't it? ;-)

Long time lurker response. This is the way that I have labelled my plastic
bobbins forever. After winding the floss around the label/bobbin, I
organize them in plastic organizers by manufacturer. Labeling those with
permanent marker is pretty easy. I also use software to keep track of my
floss. THat seems to work for me.

I'm a bag type myself [Floss-Away, in a plastic shoebox. I don't have
much of a collection yet :-)]. I've dealt with bobbins when organizing
stuff from felt applique kits, and decided I don't have the patience

Hi Kim

I store a complete set of DMC with multiples of a lot of colors using
this method. I put all skeins of the same color in one bag. When I set
up my storage system several years ago I wrote all the DMC #s on small
stickers and applied them to the upper left hand corner, just below the
closure. You could probably do this with your computer. I arranged them
numerically in 4 Holiday brand, shoe box size, plastic containers. I
lined the bottom of the boxes with Rubbermaid anti slip liner to keep
the baggies from shifting. I snipped the corners from the baggies for
ventilation. (I believed Sharon G. suggested pulling your floss from the
baggie through this hole but I've never tried it.) If you stitch on a
regular bases, long term storage in plastic shouldn't be a problem. Any
reusable pieces of floss I fold to the approximate length of the baggie
and pop it back with the skein. I never have any trouble with tangles
and the nicest thing about this type of storage is that you avoid the
horrible kinks you get with floss wound onto bobbins. After all, what is
nicer than pulling a nice smoooooth length of floss from a skein!;-) I'm
not trying to convert you, just sharing what works for me! :-)

Happy stitchin'

I'm a bag type myself. One bag per color [I have some bags with two
skeins, plus extra lengths], and I don't have much of a tangling
problem [I try to put the floss in the bags neatly, which may or may
not be helping]. I line them up in numerical order in a plastic
shoebox [I only have DMC at this point, aside from one baggie of
miscellaneous fibers].

I've given up on plastic bobbins for just that reason!! Now I have printed
off a bobbin template from "Cross Stitch Rules ok" onto card so I'm never
without bobbins or the means to mark them.

I don't use a pen or anything to write the floss number as I'm dubious about
the ink being absorbed by the floss - I simply use a bit of double sided
tape to attach the sleeve of the floss with the number on onto the bobbin;
yes you could use the same method with plastic ones too.

One thing I DO get frustrated with - Which end is the "right" end to unwind
a new floss so it doesn't tangle? Any magic answers to that one??????

I don't use bobbins myself, but while reading this I started wondering if
anyone has ever written floss numbers on paper bobbins, then laminated them
before winding the floss. That would remove the possibility of the numbers
wearing off, and make the paper bobbins stiffer. Would this work? I don't
know, but it's a thought...

I started out as a bobbin winder, then last year tried the baggy
system for most of the year (I didn't dump all my bobbins into bags,
but all new floss went into them, and any floss for any projects I was
working on at the time). I liked being able to put the leftover
pieces back into the baggy without having to wind it on a bobbin, but
overall, it took me longer to find the color I needed (had the bags on
rings) and then find the correct bag to put the skein back in, etc.
I'm back to bobbins now!

Depends if the Floss in the USA is packaged in the same way as the
floss in the UK.
In the UK there are 2 paper bands. A short one and a longer one with
the Number on.
The short one is nearer the end than the longer - I put a knitting
needle thro this end being careful to make sure that it goes thro all the
loops.
I then pull off the long band, keeping the floss on the needle. Then I
carefully start pulling the short band down to the same end as the long
one. Again carefully checking that the loops are correctly separated.
Once this has been done there is a floss end at the opposite end to
the knitting needle. I unwind it from that end, by hand, keeping the
floss in a circle.
I have no problems with tangles unless the wife starts nagging me!

The Floss-Away bags have a white area you can write the number on. :-)

For "normal" bags, stickers on the outside or an index card [or piece
of] with the number written on it and slipped into the bag should
work.

Try De-Solv-It to get those stickers off. Citrusy kinda oily stuff,
findable in the cleaning supplies section [at least here in
California]. It works incredibly well! Apply reasonable dose, let sit
for a while [I usually give it about 10-15 minutes], then the gunk

How about using a plastic and a paper one together? This would give
you the stiffness of the plastic with the ease of writing of the
paper. Just a thought....

I use paper, but I sometimes I use two for the stiffness. They are
inexpensive enough, considering they don't need to be replaced everytime you
run out of floss...

I was using the see-through type of box like you (had to have 4 to hold
all the floss bobbins) .... I had always wanted a way to keep all of the
floss in just one box, but couldn't afford one of the wooden ones like
they advertise in the magazines .... next best thing .... a plastic
gadget box with the mini drawers from Lowes ..... it's great to see all
the floss together ... they fit perfectly and it's so easy to pick out
the colors (just open to see how the colors vary) and it even has a
handle for easy transporting .... cost: $15.00 .... best thing I've
found so far and it fits nicely on my craft room peg board when I'm not
carrying it around the house .....

LOL, Lisa! I have 5 of those mounted on my wall, 1 color per drawer,
and I *still* have a huge bag full of floss that doesn't have a spot.
I'll either need 3 more cabinets, or I'll have to double up colors in
the drawer :-P Maybe I can find drawer dividers......
