Here's an idea mentioned from a friend to cut the number for the floss wrapping
that already have the number and tape it onto your bobbin.

Before you buy.
I have two different methods:
First, I just used a Sharpie fine-point marker to mark the number and
brand on the end.
Second, I have cut the numbers off of the skeins and taped them to the
end with scotch tape. This method is easier to read, but the tape stops
sticking after a while. I am still working on this method.
I'm a newbie to the floss-storage thing, but I do like the bobbins. I
can never get the floss to come out right from the skeins and they get
all messed up.

LOL. If only I were that organized! Most of mine are labelled in the middle,
although some are labelled on the side. However, when I kit projects up,
bobbins, skeins, and spools all get merrily tossed into ziplock baggies, and
there's no careful picking of corners when I pull them out of *there*. :)

I would not recommend the paint markers, Angela. I used them to decorate a
small bobbin box I was filling for my daughter, and they peeled right off!

Faye,
I use the same system and I use a Sharpie permanent marker directly on the
plastic bobbin. I keep one handy. If I notice the color start to fade, usually
when I use the bobbin, I refresh the number, It dries quickly and is relatively
permanent. I don't use the labels for the very reason you mention. Some one I
know suggested putting the DMC label thru the hole that you use for a bobbin
winder. I'd still be afraid of it coming off. HTH.
Lollee
Metal stamps or dies are used for punching numbers on to steel and are sharp
enough to do a nice job on plastic. Do not put the number (1) to close to
the edge of the bobbin or you may crack the bobbin if you hit it too hard.
Takes about two minutes to select the numbers and tape them together. You
could also tape on a bit of cardboard to make it easier to hold the dies
together and in line. Takes longer to tear everything apart after you find
that you have on number upside down.
Metal stamps or dies are available at most well stocked tool outlets. You
can buy a character set or a numeral set or both if you need to stamp DMC,
ANCHOR, J&C.
An alternative is to use an electric engraving tool. That is if you have a
steady enough hand.
Then again if you have already purchased everything that humans have ever
made and have money to burn take a thousand bobbins and you color chart down
to your local Trophy shop and have them engraved. They might even fill in
the numbers with a product called Monofill if you talk nice. You should get
a price break on quantity.
End of hassel.....
Don't backstitch to e-mail just stitchit.

I can't help but think that you 'floss winding, bobbin labelers' would
have a lot more stitchin' time if you just popped the unopened skein of
floss into a snack size baggie. Cut the corner off for ventilation,
label them with easy to write on stickers and store them in shoe box
size containers! You also have a great place to store those usable
pieces that make bobbins look like colorful balls of spaghetti!
It is time for that debate again, isn't it? ;-)

I'm a bag type myself [Floss-Away, in a plastic shoebox. I don't have
much of a collection yet :-)]. I've dealt with bobbins when organizing
stuff from felt applique kits, and decided I don't have the patience
for the winding and unwinding.

Hi Kim
I store a complete set of DMC with multiples of a lot of colors using
this method. I put all skeins of the same color in one bag. When I set
up my storage system several years ago I wrote all the DMC #s on small
stickers and applied them to the upper left hand corner, just below the
closure. You could probably do this with your computer. I arranged them
numerically in 4 Holiday brand, shoe box size, plastic containers. I
lined the bottom of the boxes with Rubbermaid anti slip liner to keep
the baggies from shifting. I snipped the corners from the baggies for
ventilation. (I believed Sharon G. suggested pulling your floss from the
baggie through this hole but I've never tried it.) If you stitch on a
regular bases, long term storage in plastic shouldn't be a problem. Any
reusable pieces of floss I fold to the approximate length of the baggie
and pop it back with the skein. I never have any trouble with tangles
and the nicest thing about this type of storage is that you avoid the
horrible kinks you get with floss wound onto bobbins. After all, what is
nicer than pulling a nice smoooooth length of floss from a skein!;-) I'm
not trying to convert you, just sharing what works for me! :-)

I'm a bag type myself. One bag per color [I have some bags with two
skeins, plus extra lengths], and I don't have much of a tangling
problem [I try to put the floss in the bags neatly, which may or may
not be helping]. I line them up in numerical order in a plastic
shoebox [I only have DMC at this point, aside from one baggie of
miscellaneous fibers].

Okay Mavia, you have my curiosity piqued. Do you put one skein per
bag? Do you have trouble with tangles? How do you keep them organized?
Do you put the snack sized baggies in larger ones in groupings
according to their color or maybe their numbers? If you give me
satisfactory answers to these questions I just may be a convert. My
main problem when I don't put them on bobbins seems to be tangles.
Thanks in advance.

I've given up on plastic bobbins for just that reason!! Now I have printed
off a bobbin template from "Cross Stitch Rules ok" onto card so I'm never
without bobbins or the means to mark them.
I don't use a pen or anything to write the floss number as I'm dubious about
the ink being absorbed by the floss - I simply use a bit of double sided
tape to attach the sleeve of the floss with the number on onto the bobbin;
yes you could use the same method with plastic ones too.
One thing I DO get frustrated with - Which end is the "right" end to unwind
a new floss so it doesn't tangle? Any magic answers to that one??????
Maria
I bet my mom would like this! Can you tell us where to get the template?
BTW, Mom labels her (plastic) bobbins with a black Sharpie. No problems so far.

Depends if the Floss in the USA is packaged in the same way as the
floss in the UK.
In the UK there are 2 paper bands. A short one and a longer one with
the Number on.
The short one is nearer the end than the longer - I put a knitting
needle thro this end being careful to make sure that it goes thro all the
loops.
I then pull off the long band, keeping the floss on the needle. Then I
carefully start pulling the short band down to the same end as the long
one. Again carefully checking that the loops are correctly separated.
Once this has been done there is a floss end at the opposite end to
the knitting needle. I unwind it from that end, by hand, keeping the
floss in a circle.
I have no problems with tangles unless the wife starts nagging me!

The Floss-Away bags have a white area you can write the number on. :-)
For "normal" bags, stickers on the outside or an index card [or piece
of] with the number written on it and slipped into the bag should
work.

Try De-Solv-It to get those stickers off. Citrusy kinda oily stuff,
findable in the cleaning supplies section [at least here in
California]. It works incredibly well! Apply reasonable dose, let sit
for a while [I usually give it about 10-15 minutes], then the gunk

I use paper, but I sometimes I use two for the stiffness. They are
inexpensive enough, considering they don't need to be replaced everytime you
run out of floss...

LOL, Lisa! I have 5 of those mounted on my wall, 1 color per drawer,
and I *still* have a huge bag full of floss that doesn't have a spot.
I'll either need 3 more cabinets, or I'll have to double up colors in
the drawer :-P Maybe I can find drawer dividers......
