Hi All

My sister lives in Virginia and during a recent chat about needlework stores
she mentioned that she would like to visit "Needlewoman East" in Falls
Church, which is quite some distance from her.

Has any one visited here? Opinions all welcome....

Hi JoD and all
This is Norman from Newport News and I can tell you that a visit to this
store is well worth it. Yesterday we stopped in there and they seem to have
the most complete sets of threads, of all types and their patterns are easy
to search thru, since they have them separated in magazine holders. They
ladies that run it and volunteer there are very friendly and helpful.
Although they did not have the necklace backing I needed nor the pattern I
am looking for, to do a hat for a policeman friend of ours.

Another place we stopped at was in Fredericksburg, about 40 miles down I95.
Fredericksburg's downtown, by itself, is a nice place to since it is old
time, has lots of unique antique and unusual shops, including Everything
Cross Stitch on Caroline St. This shop owner ordered the necklace backing I
needed and had some very unusual patterns and kits, that Needlewomen's East
did not have. One of the shops in Fredericksburg, is the Cat Shop, across
the street from Everything Cross Stitch, and it has every imaginable item
made about cats, from socks to lawn sprinklers to jewelry and even a CD
holder. Also visit the ice cream shop, it is great! Another good store, for
those of you with little kids, was the train store, also on Caroline Street,
who had lots of BRIO trains and some garden type also.

We intend to take another weekend trip and explore Fredericksburg again in
more detail. There are other shops in the area that I want to explore, like
in Occoquan, which is near Fredericksburg and there are more stitching shops
in Fredericksburg. Also, while around Washington, we stopped in to see
Quilters Unlimited quilt show and it was worth the $5 to get in. The quilts
by the members were fantastic. I had never expected to see the uniqueness of
the way these people put pieces of material together with the unusual
threads we all use. They use material to paint pictures, besides from
geometric shapes. I even bought a pattern, to do a 3 dimensional quilt with
elephants, because it was so unusual and unique (like I need another hobby
or project).

Well used up all my letters. Have to go search for police officer patterns.
While at CATs in Charleston, S. C., I had the vendor who makes up the
buttons, make me a gun with a boat on it. He works for the local shipyard as
security and shoots for a hobby. Last nite I borrowed two bullets, he uses,
so that I could photocopy the bottom of them and use the photocopy as
letters in the saying I am going to put on the hat. Like "Watch out, Brian
has you in his sights!" And use the gun for part of the "B" in his name and
the bullet design for the "sights" lettering. They kept our daughter, while
we were in Charleston and we got his wife a necklace, but I wanted to make
something for her husband, to thank him also.

Norman

Before we go on a trip, I log onto CameoRoze's Stitcher's Studio and print
out the list of shops for that state or the ones we are traveling thru. She
updates the list with the shops that have closed or opened and lists their
hours and what type of items they specialize in.

I second that, very friendly and helpful. It isn't a very large shop
but they have a good selection of charts.

I didn't find the needlework shop in Occoquan, but it's a pretty place
to visit. There's a nice quilting shop, down by the river.

And to you, Joanne, I bet I had further to travel to Falls Church than
your sister does - I live in Cambridgeshire, in the UK! ;)

The shop that used to be in Occoquan closed about 4 years ago. No idea if
another place has opened since then

Needlewoman East does have a good selection of charts, but their emphasis in on
needlepoint. Lots of canvases and yummy fibers.

If your sister is travelling a long way, then she should also plan to check out
In Stitches on Route 1 in Alexandria and the Scarlet Thread in Fairfax.

Donna -

I am traveling to Virginia Beach next month to see my mother (I live in Des
Moines, Iowa). Does your sister have any suggestions for the VA Beach area. We
go several times a year, and I have found some great little shops on my own -
but as always I am looking for suggestions or praises.

Norman,

We're in Poquoson. :) Made a trip down to VABeach this morning to From the
Heart. We stopped on the way to DC a month ago <or more> in that little town of
Occoquan and KNOW it's a must go back to sort of town. Did they have a XS store
in there? We just stopped at the tourist info building and kept on going into
the DC area.

My Cross-stitch Guide isn't available right now. I do remember that a few
years back there was one in Lynnhaven. My son went there, and bought me some
nice kits for Christmas. When I lived in Va Beach, that whole area was
undeveloped; that was thirty years ago, so I know I would get lost!.
I just remembered Barb's Index was on the web, so I cut and pasted the shops
listed. Sorry it is long!

I live in the Hampton Roads area and think you should check out The Village
Stitchery in Newport News (757 - 599-0101, one in Williamsburg is the
Stitching Well of Haus Tirol (757) 220-0313, one in Hampton, Needleworks,
(757) 851-1117, From the Heart, (757)523-0177 and The Hook and I (757)

for just threads. All stores have large selections and their salespersons
are very helpful.

Thank you so much for the information. I have been to'From The Heart' - I found
it by accident last September - it is only a couple miles from my mother's
house - it was a wonderful little shop. On the advice of another post I saw, I
went to the CameoRoze's Stitcher's Studio website and printed the list of
Virginia shops. My DH is an avid golfer, so I will be trying to go to as many
shops as I can while he is on the course. :-) My mother and I are planning a
trip to Williamsburg - so I will have to check out that shop as well. Maybe I
should pack an extra suitcase....

Thank you for the list of shops. You mentioned some I didn't have on my
list....so I am happy to have a few more places to look for while my DH is
golfing - it is amazing how far he will travel for a good course :-) - little
does he know we might have to add a suitcase on the way home to carry my stash.

There is also one I have been to in Gloucester. I found it in the phone
book. It was in a private home, with a small section seperated for the shop!
This was only about four years back!

No, but there is a shop a little further up Rt 1 in Alexandria called "In
Stitches" and if you want to go to Manassas there is "Old Town Needlecrafts."

Sadly, this shop is out of business, after the Pentagon got hit, business took
a dive and she just couldn't afford to stay in business anymore.

The same is apparently true for the Occoquan shop.

Donna,

I really don't think this is a true statement. The shop is pretty much
50/50. However, the bulk of the XS charts are in magazine boxes on a book
case. They are easier to store in less space than canvases.

That's what I heard recently. Nimble Needles closed recently. I started
shopping there 23 years ago when I worked in Crystal City (Arlington) and they
had just opened.

To me, it seems their emphasis in on needlepoint. They don't get a ton of new
charts or kits. Of course they will order anything for you, but I frequently
don't know what I'm looking for until I see it!

Kris,
You going to the pentagon? We're stationed at Langley currently. Just got here
this spring.
I don't know if anyone mentioned the store, "From the Heart" in Virginia Beach.
It's my current fave LNS since it's really the only with cross stitch that i've
found so far. There is a nice NP store in Newport News.

And, I don't remember now who mentioned it... but Gloucester had a LNS? I've
not ventured that direction yet. DH looked at a house out there when he came
house hunting, but it's quite the drive from there to the base.

I live near From the Heart store and I love it. I was just in there the
other day too. They carrry all kinds of great things. I get into so much
trouble there. I dont really shop anywhere else. There used to be a store
that had some crosstitch stuff in virginia beach called the Hook and I.
They didnt have alot of stuff there. If anyone would like to get together
sometime to stitch I would love to. you can email me.
