I was at Michaels today and they are discontinuing 36 DMC colors. Does
anyone know if they are being discontinued by DMC or just Michaels?

The colors are:
370,371,372,523,580,581,730-734,829-834,891-893,900,917,919,921,992,3705,3706,3708,3763,

3802,3805,3813,3814,3817,3819 and 3829.

I'm hoping that it is just Michaels that is discontinuing these colors
(it wouldn't surprise me) but I want to make
sure that I'm not caught short. I still regret not getting the 413-415
grays that were changed by DMC - blue elephants just don't work for me
unless they're in a baby gift!!

Thanks for any info anyone can provide. I emailed DMC as well, but
probably won't hear for a day or two.

Jane, I don't know the answer to your question, but would like to.

Rather than bombard DMC with this question numerous times, would you
please relay to us the response you get from them?

Thanks,

Barbara

Hi, Jane.

Did you find out any more info on those colors. I work at our local
Michael's part-time and noticed that a bunch of colors were in the clearance
bin for 15 cents each. There was also some metallic thread and pearl cotton
thread in there as well.

Joan :)

Last I heard, just Micheals is not selling the colors - they have only
so much space alloted. However, I still got one of each when in there
today, as the choices for floss in this town are Micheals vs JoAnns.
I'd be surprised if DMC is stopping the colors as some of them are
pretty new (3800 range).

Hi Jane,
When I went to Michaels today, all of the numbers you listed were crossed off
the bins, and of course the bins were empty. I had asked Michaels a month or
so back when they were going to get the newest DMC colors, and the person told
me that Michaels was discontinuing some shades to make room for the new. This
doesn't make a whole bunch of sense, but then...... I was able to purchase the
892 and 3705 that I needed at another fabric store.

They are probably being discontinued by Michael's since DMC says in their ads
that they "never" discontinue colors.

Another stupid decision by Michaels! ::::sigh::::

Does anyone know if this is only in the US Michaels or are the Canadian
stores also doing the same?
Many thanks

What is it with them? They opened a new store here last summer and for a
while they had an adequate selection of needlework stuff. Now they have not
restocked anything, thrown the last row of DMC thread into bins and seem to
be discontinuing it, have not restocked either fabric or Mill Hill beads
since long before Christmas. Not that I want to be critical, but how many
artificial flower arrangements can they actually sell and stay in business?
I hate the thought of ordering everything but between that place and Wally
World, there is no other choice.

I was in Michael's today and noticed the "discontinued" DMC. They had it
for 15 cents. BUT they also had other needlework stuff. They had some
Kreinik also on sale for something like $1.19.

I have noticed our supply of needlework stuff going way downhill too. I
agree with you, Nan. I can't see artificial flowers keeping a business
alive!!

Just an FYI they had all their needlework and latch rugs 30% off ....

They also, for the second time in 3 weeks, charged me two times for the same
item (or should I say they TRIED to) ....

Wal-Mart by me lowered DMC prices to 18 cents per skein ....

Gosh! I sound like the town crier. Should go! Everyone have a great
evening ....

Hi All,

I received a reply from DMC, today, that these colors are not being
discontinued. It seems that Michaels is discontinuing these 36 colors to make
room for the 36 new colors without having to add any additional shelf space.

I'll still take advantage of their 40% Off Coupons (a full set of 6 sizes of
scroll rods, spreaders & knobs for $38 is a good deal!) but I wouldn't shop
there for anything else unless it's a "Steal".

We have 3 Michaels in our area, my DH went for some frames that were on sale, of
course they didn't have any. When he asked about a raincheck they said they
don't give rainchecks. We went to one of the other 2 stores, they also were out
of the frames (their shipment had not arrived yet) but were willing to give him
a raincheck. Wouldn't you think that the policy would be the same across the
board, company-wide!

Like I said, I'll take advantage of a good deal, but my LNS will get all of my
framing, fabric, chart & specialty thread business!

Just my 2 cents...

Still think that's not quite right. I have a partial skein of DMC
(definitely...I lost the numbered band, though) that is probably pretty
old...and doesn't come close to *any* of the samples in my chart. Dunno
what it's supposed to be. Doesn't matter much, it's cozy in it's little
home...and I'll use it when I get the urge (don't remember the color
off-hand, since it's been a while since I've seen it).

I was not in my Michaels' but a near by one and they are clearing out their
Kreinik, too. Most were $1-1.50. They seemed to be keeping the gold, silvers. I
liked they selection, but wondered with the line of books they carried why they
would have four shades of blue blending filament.

Their Zwiegart was cleaned out too. And although they were not clearance, most
of the Mill Hill beads (but not every color) were 99c.

Shawn,

As much as I hate to say it, but my LNS told me that the
demand for cross stitch is not great right now and a lot of places are
getting out of it. Like Wal-mart, they carry the regular DMC threads,
but getting out of the books and kits. I talked to the women that
worked in the craft area in my local store and she said that Wal-mart
is getting out of cross stitch. As far as Michaels, well I don't go
to them for craft stuff, so I have no idea what they are doing. I did
go to a Ben Franklins a while back and they had all there cross stitch
stuff on sale with the floss out in a main isle with a sale sign on
it. 10 cents a skein. Cheap. Sorta sad if you ask me. I guess
people have gotten other hobbies and can't make time to do the
wonderful world of cross stitch anymore. Lets hope that people pick
it back up soon.

At one point, DMC changed a whole range of the colors (wasn't it in the
blue/grey range?) Anyway, if you have a really old skein of one of these, the
number will still exist, but the color will look different.

99 cents WOW we pay the equivalent to 2 dollars a pack here in UK. I
wished I could have got my hands on some of those.

They still had Zwiegart at the Michaels' near me so I snapped up some
linen and lugana, some of the 15 cent floss, and used the 40% coupon to
get Santa of the Forest.

I do support our LNS, but I wouldn't have been able to justify (ahem)
these purchases so soon after the holidays if it weren't for the big
savings.

Speaking of Discontinues - I'll be making one more big batch of fabric for
Firefly Fairies and Emma's Garden, then "that's all folks!" :) The Clorox is
starting to bother me. So if you want one, speak now, or forever hold your
needles :)

*** You are making me incredibly jealous! The last Kreinik I purchased here
cost me $8.00 (nearly $12.00 US at current x-rates) and Mill Hill Beads were
$6.00.

Sorry to come in late on this but I'm behind on my reading....

I was in Ben Franklin yesterday, and the stitch area was well-stocked
and floss was the regular price of $.28/skein. No sign of them
getting out of the business.

Yikes, Lisa-Marie! I'm sure glad I don't live in Tassie. :-o (The LNS is a
bit dearer than Lincraft and Myer but even so we still only pay $5.80 or so
for the Kreinik braids and $3.25 for Mill Hill beads.) Do you indulge in
mail-order a lot?

Hi Josephine
Until recently and the arrival of the Internet in my home, I used to just
drool over the beautiful charts that I wanted to do and then just put them
down and pick up something cheaper and simpler. I've now discovered mail
order and also have come into contact with some lovely people in the USA who
have offered to do my shopping for me there. :0) And also, with my model
stitching, I can receive my pay in cash or stash at wholesale rates which
will help immensely too!
