I just finished the Peacock Tapestry (over 400 hours, and found the
charting almost flawless. Be careful, however, because some of the
symbols in the tree and leaves are nearly identical and very close
together.

400 HOURS!!! i think i'd need much more than that! wow, that's for
ever in my speed.. what I've not figured out, is, and this shows
me as a real beginner, only 8 big projects, is when you put the
beads on, there's about 288, right?, well, do you do it on one
thread, or each one individually??Also, do you recommend a scroll
frame, or hoop, as it's so large? I got a huge frame for it, and
later projects, but if it takes so long to do, will get in the way.
Thanks, Lyen

To Lyen:

For the tapestry project, I used an 8" or 9" wooden hoop. This did not
cause any problem until I got toward the bottom of the project. On much
of that work, I was able to turn the pattern and project upside down
because of the border symmetry. As for the beads, I used a single thread
running continuously. Surprisingly, the bead attachment did not take too
long. I double looped the beads to secure them more tightly. I have a
night job where I have several hours at a time to cross stitch, and that
helps cut down on the hours. The 400 + hours (I used the timer/lap
setting on my watch) included only actual cross stitch time; it did not
include other prep time. Dennis

Thanks for the info. I much prefer the hoop, to a frame, can hold
it closer, better control. I shall try to experiment with a
large one like yours. I am glad to know the thread for beads
can be one, as i don't much like fiddling bits! Are you doing any
other TW projects?LYEN

I'm working on this too. It was supposed to be this year's project,
but I'm only 1/3 way through. (Still I had the excuse I've been on
holiday, and done lots of other embroidery, including cross-stitch
round robins,... :)

400 hours does seem an under-estimate to me. I did quite a lot last
Christmas holidays, and expect to get more done these holidays. I'm
leaving the beads and gold thread right till the end, so I'll let
someone else tell you how to stitch them. I'm using an 18cm hoop, and
just moving it around as I need to - works for me. Also, I'm
completing every stitch as I go, rather than working across in rows.
But then there aren't very many places you could work in rows!

I am considering doing the Teresa Wentzler project about English Country
Garden (or something like that name). I'll put it off for a while until I
recover from the Peacock Tapestry! Right now I'm working on a couple
Wildlife of Wyoming series and the Amid Amish Life pattern. Dennis

I recently purchased a Teresa Wentzler pattern called "English Garden
Sampler" (or something similar) that has two peacocks, an alphabet and
a gate (over 1), some trees and bushes, a fountain, and a wonderful
border with lots of beading and satin stitch stuff.

Is this the pattern you are discussing?? Does she have another pattern
with peacocks in it??

I have several Teresa Wentzler patterns in my collection. Does anyone know
of any more??

I have the following (from memory - names might be wrong):

6 rocking horses (I remember "Misty" was one)
4 carousel horses ("Winter", "Spring", "Summer", "Fall")
"The Carousel" (pink and white carousel - cover shows it on brown linen)
"The Castle" (green dragon wrapped around pink castle)
"The Unicorn" (white Unicorn looking into window - on black linen)
"Magical Night" (Women in sleigh pulled by 2 pegasus (pegasii??))
"Fantasy Sampler" (maiden playing music, dragon, unicorn, alphabet, etc)
"English Garden Sampler" (peacocks in garden, alphabet, see above)

To Dennis What is the TW garden like?? I've never heard of that?
Does it have fauna? What is in the birds you are doing? local
birds, or exotic?

We are discussing the TW Peacock Tapestry, a peacock on a branch
over a meadow, in a pear tree. beads all around, in the border.
I have the fantasy sampler, too. not done yet. LOVE it. also the
caslte. Do you have the castle sampler? minstrels on the bottom,
and castle in a frame, alphabet around?

Congratulations! I am about halfway finished with her Castle Sampler, and
I would also like to do the Peacock Tapestry. A question for anyone out
there... I saw a bellpull of fruits done by her in an edition of "Just Cross
Stitch" in an asverstisement section. I have never seen it in stores, though.
Has anyone on the newsgroup done this?

I am currently working on the bellpull. I don't have much time
to devote to it right now (mostly during my lunch hour). It is very
beautiful, but extremely time consuming! I suppose it's like most of her
other designs: tons of blends that take a long time to sort out, and you
only need them for a few stitches at a time. I can't predict when I'll
actually finish the thing, but I'm sure it will be well worth the
effort! I'm thinking of finishing one of the six squares and then
working on another project, then going back to the bellpull.

I'm a big TW fan myself. I haven't done the Fruit Bellpull yet myself but have
seen it stitched twice at a shop I sub at sometimes and can hardly wait. The
shading is some of the most exquiste I've ever seen and nearly every stitch
is blended colors. The design was orginally published in the "Just Cross-
Stitch" magazine (in several issues needless to say) and had several problems,
I understand. Just Cross-Stitch then published it (with corrections) in leaflet
form which should be available at most stores. I prefer to buy the leaflet and
kit it myself to ensure good floss and fabric. Good luck finding the leaflet.
If you can't find it, email me at my husband's address and I'll find out what my
shop owner would charge to send it to you. Be warned that there are some
48 colors (combined into almost 100 symbols) to achieve the subtle tones.
This is my first post so if it's screwy please be kind.
Keep on stitching,
Carol

My goodness! 100 symbols! Eeeekkkk. I could see that I would have my work
cut out for me. It does sound like the leaflet or kit is the way to go --
rather than try to hunt down back issues of Just Cross-Stitch. I probably
have projects lined up until the turn-of-the-century, or even later.

Thanks for the info.

I need new instructions for mind. My paper where it was folded is frail and I can not read it. Plus I can not find peacock thread any where.

You can purchase the chart at patternsonline.com. It will probably cost $7-8; it is the updated computerized version. The symbols might be somewhat different from the hand drawn chart.

Also, if you’re on Facebook, you can join the Teresa Wentzler Cross Stitch SAL; several people in that group are working on Peacock Tapestry.

I'm stuck on the tree because the directions say when "sideways triangle" appears beside one color or two colors bracketed together, stitch bottom half cross with colors listed and stitch top half cross using one strand 453 ? Thanks for mentioning the FB group too - I looked them up.

I haven’t stitched this design myself, and I don’t own the chart. Have you asked anyone in the Facebook group for help? It sounds as though you stitch just the bottom leg with the blended threads but use only a single strand of 453; other than that, I haven’t a clue.

I’ve looked longingly at the chart, but with some eye issues and my age taken into consideration, I doubt stitching it will happen.
