Sandra - I have never heard of this, but it sounds very interesting. I'll
keep reading postings to see if someone has an answer. I am curious as to
what it looks like.

Sandra:

These handstitched (long-armed cross stitch) rugs are indeed beautiful and
have a very long history. I have a friend who is very interested in them,
has studied older examples at the V&A Museum and is stitching one himself.
If you would like to correspond with him, his name is Leon Conrad and his
e-mail address is: 10075...@compuserve.com

Sandra - looked at the site. I think I have found something I would be very
interested in. Do you know if any of the materials are available in Canada?
I have never seen anything like this. Thanks

You can buy kits to make them online in the UK:

http://www.webshops.co.uk/shops/Claire_Fain/index2.htm

(click on Browse for Rugs then Anaci rug kits)

I bought 'Jaquelina' a few weeks ago but haven't tried it out
yet!

If you'd like more info on these rugs, look for a copy of Portuguese
Needlepoint Rugs by Patricia Stone. Check oop book sources like
www.bookfinder.com.

Book contains history, designs, and stitch instructions including doing the
long armed cross stitch on the diagonal and around curves really fascinating.

Mary Hickmott did an article on it in her last magazine.

Sandra,
I am slowly recalling a magazine article about these rugs that I read within
the last year in an Interweave Press publication, probably Piecework. I
have to go through my back issues to find it, but I'll get the info to you
when I do. I would love to find out more about these rugs too. The article
had some history in it and I believe a small project based on the stitch,
but I'm not positive about that.

Thanks for bringing this subject to our attention and making more of us
aware of the resources that do exist.

One of the needlecraft magazines (a UK one I think) had an article on
Araiolos rugs in the past few months. If you're interested, let me know and
I'll try to figure out which magazine and month. I believe they also had
kits available.

I found the article in Piecework's September/October 1999 issue. It
includes some history and some information on contemporary Arraiolos
embroiderers and a small coaster sized sampler that provides an opportunity
to become familiar with the stitch's directional variations. Not a
particularly exciting little project, but directional variations are
diagrammed. It doesn't include any information about working around curves.

This is probably all information that is included in the book you mentioned,
but I know I always like to see as much as I can about things I'm interested
in.

If you find any other resources, please share them with us. This is such a
beautiful style of embroidery.

Happy stitching,
Nanette

Posting for Louise. I know this is a shot in the dark as your post is 21 years old, but I bought Jaquelina - probably around the same time that you did, but have only just got around to stitching it. I find I am a couple of meters short of the red wool, and this seems almost impossible to get hold of anywhere anymore. I don't suppose you, or anyone else can spare me a few lenghts of the red? Happy to pay. Marjan
