As a person of Dutch decent I am looking for any designs, especially samplers,
that are dutch in origin.

I would appreciate it if you could give me any suggestions about where to find
these designs.

Thanks
Maggie

Maggie,

I believe The Essamplaire has one ... I cannot remember the name of it but
if you check their web site -- the alphabet is influenced by dutch as well.
I know because this week when I was at Woodlawn, my instructor Elaine showed
me this particular sampler because of the fact it was dutch influenced
(someone had worked it and it was displayed there). She carries this
sampler in her shop www.heartscontent.com and if you write her and ask
about it, I'm sure she can tell you more. She does mailorder so if you
cannot find it at your local shop you can purchase it from Elaine.

At any rate, what I remember about it is the coloring and the size. It
seemed large and beautiful, with muted colors -- I remember apricot tones
and greens, and the piece worked at Woodlawn was done with a "tea stained"
background and it was lovely.

There is a book on Dutch Samplers called _Merklappen uit de lage landen_
by Joke Visser. ISBN 90 6113 689 X. It has quite a few samplers from
many different parts of Holland and also patterns for those samplers.
As you might guess from the title it is written in Nederlandsch but the
pictures are great. I got mine from Betty Feinstein but you might check
Amazon Books also.

Our local library has a book of designs from Dutch samplers. It is
hardcover, several hundred pages, and filled with charts of motifs and
photos of old Dutch samplers. It may be exactly what you're looking for.
The book looks old, so is likely out of print, but someone here may
recognize it and be able to give you the exact title and author.

If not, e-mail me and I'll get title and author for you next time I go
to the library.

I have a hardback book entitled: Embroidery Motifs from old Dutch Samplers,
published by Chas. Scribners's Sons. NY 1974 SBN 07134 28759 It was
originally published in the UK by BT BAtsford Ltd, 4 Fitzharding St, London
W1 Library of Congress Catalog Card #73-13367 SBN684-136678-3. It is
excellent and I've used motifs again and again. All are charted in black &
white with a common color-symbol reference. Explanations are given for the
symbolism of each motif. They are catagorized according to basic areas,
ie: flowers, household items, biblical motifs, etc. and each chapter has a
historical reference to samplers whose small details are photographed. The
book was compiled by Albarta Meulenbelt-Nieuwburg & translated by Patricia
Wardle & Gillian Downing. I hope you can locate this book. I find it an
invaluable source of inspiration. Good luck.

Maggie,

The book "101 Best Loved Designs from Cross Stitch & Country Crafts" contains the
design for the "Dutch Sampler" that was originally published in the Fall 1992 issue of
"Treasures in Needlework" and it is a very beautiful sampler. You should be able to find a
copy of this book at a good, large bookstore and see if you like the design. This sampler
was designed by Sandra Orton but according to the magazine article it is part of a series of
carefully researched sampler designs. BTW, the article recommends "Embroidery Motifs
from Old Dutch Samplers" by Meulenbelt-Nieuwburg that someone else suggested to you.

Good Luck,

Maggie,

There are a number of RCTN posters living in the
Netherlands. Two in particular may be able to
help you. I will try contacting them for you in
the next couple of days. BTW Lanarte is a Dutch
company. Also Pako, though I do not think that
this company is available outside of Holland.
Also Thea Governeur is a transplanted Cloggie, so
some of their designs may be appropriate.

You might like to look at the Eva Rosenstand kits. I believe the
company is based in Denmark, but lots of the designs seem appropriate
to the Netherlands (windmills, etc. -- there's even a big city view of
Amsterdam in 1650).

Their catalog has an address and phone number in the Netherlands:

My Dutch isn't very good, but I think this lady is saying "If it is
Dutch patterns you are looking for, I think I can help. But I must have a
clear idea of what you are looking for. I have patterns from The Netherlands.

I stitched the Dutch Sampler back in 1992 when it appeared in TIN
and gave it to my mother as a gift
She treasures it, I covet it and try to spirit it out of her house every time I visit
It is beautiful and an excellent representation of Dutch stichery.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions

FYI - if any of you can reach the Portland, Oregon area, Acorns & Threads
is having a trunk show of The Essamplaire from March 31-May 2. They are
also having Earth Threads from March 31-April 11, so the first two weeks
in April will be a great time to visit there. Roz has promised *at least
20 or more models from each designer to be on display. It will be a
feast for the eyes and the imagination.* (from her special flyer I
received in yesterday's mail)
See you there...

Translation:

If you're looking at dutch charts, maybe I can help you,
but I have to know what you are looking for.
I have charts from Holland,
Petra

There are a number of books about Dutch samplers, a.o. the book already
mentioned to you from Alberta Meulenbelt-Nieuwburg. In Holland we also do
have books from Joke Visser, with charts from about 25 old Dutch samplers.
Also Permin has some kits with Dutch samplers. So if there is anything you
specifically want, please let me know.

I recently purchased an excellent copy of this book from Bette Feinstein for
much less than Amazon's price to me, which was over $200. I've been looking
for this one for a while.

This terrific book has recently been reprinted. I carry it in my catalog.
E-mail me for more information. I also have reproduced a Dutch sampler
originally made by Trinie Pieters in 1706. It is now in the collection of the
