>DMC vs Anchor?

hi,
Personally I think the colors of ANCHOR are much brighter... they are
shinier, and don't tangle as much... but cannot get it here where I live...
have managed to buy some on ebay... and I really like it.. I still use DMC,
probably always will.. also use the GAST threads..and DMC flower thread too...
but I do like the ANCHOR..jmho,LL

Hi Barb:

I have used both, but prefer DMC because of its availability and cost. My
local needlework shop is only open 20 hours per week, none of them at night.
If I run out of a color on Saturday afternoon, it would be Tuesday, at the
earliest that I could buy more. I would have to drive DH to work at 6:00 AM
(20 miles ones way) so I could have the car, then drive at 10:00 AM (25
miles one way) to the local needlework shop.

The local WalMart is open 24 hours a day and sells DMC for half what my
local needlework shop charges for Anchor. For awhile, I used to use Anchor
white as it appeared to me to be whiter than DMC white, but now DMC has a
whiter white so I don't bother with the Anchor. I understand why a shop
that sells Anchor only would want all their models done using Anchor. Many
people want to do their cross stitch using the exact same fabric and floss
as was used on the model in the store. Also, when a stitcher runs to the
shop for a skein or two of Anchor, they are apt to come home with many other
items.

Yes! I've used both, and prefer the Anchor. The Anchor seems to
tangle less and seems less fuzzy than the DMC. My LNS sells DMC and
Anchor for the same price, so cost is not an issue. I'm sloooowly
using up my DMC and converting to Anchor.

I think Anchor has a more upscale image, because you can't get it at Walmart or
places like that. They only sell to small shops. I do know they have some
pretty colors! Brighter than DMC, to my eyes anyway.

Barbara,

My LNS runs a series of notebook courses, one of which deals with threads.
During each class they provide a number of different brands of a particular
type of thread. We have covered cotton floss, flower thread, rayon, silk,
metallics, wool, perle cotton and this past month overdyes.

When we did the comparison for floss, I found I did like the Anchor better,
because it did not knot as much for me. I have a friend however who feels DMC
knots less then Anchor.

When we did overdyes, we were told that of the eight we used, 7 where made from
Anchor. This was because the makers feel it holds the dye better.

The overdyes we used were Needle Necessites, Gentle Arts Sampler Threads, Weeks
Dye Works, Leah's, Sweet Child of Mine Petals, Minnamurra (Australian) and Old
Sampler Threads. Leah's was the only one to use DMC.

Hope this helps.

I've only ever used DMC, mostly because it is easier to find and cheaper. I
don't blame an LNS for only carrying Anchor, as the big craft stores sell DMC
so cheap and the small store couldn't afford to keep up with them. I'd
probably try Anchor if I could find it<G>

Do people seem to prefer the look of one of these stitched examples over the
other?

Anchor black seems to cover better too - w/less fraying.

Gee, Candy...now you've peaked my interest..I've used sampler threads &
Needle Necc. & Week's, but I've never heard of the others..am especially
interested in Old Sampler Threads as I do mainly samplers. What did you
think of these others in comparison to Weeks, Sampler threads & NN? Any
comments on the colors? I really really enjoy using the overdyes and am
subbing them for reg. floss whenever possible. Your thoughts would
really be appreciated if you can spare the time. Oh, yes, any ideas of
where to buy these online??

Thank-you, Pam in CA xxxxx/

I think they are both quality product. They are a little different in
their color lines. The Anchor black seems to cover better than DMC. I
use both and prefer Anchor, but only by a small margin. Some designs
are designed with DMC and the Anchor conversion may not look right and
some are designed with Anchor........I did the Wisteria in DMC and it
hangs on my LNS shop wall, and now I going to do it for me with Anchor
and we will compare the two. The violets and blues are really nice in
DMC and equally nice but a little different in Anchor. DMC is
generally easier and cheaper to get in the states.

But does it have black in it? My LNS has two bookmarks, one done in
DMC and one Anchor, you can tell by looking at the blacks.....Anchor
is blacker.

I have used both Anchor and DMC. I haven't been able to tell much difference
between the two. I do like Anchor Black better. I use mainly DMC because of
availablty.

Hi, Barbara,
I'm so glad to see this post and the replies. I was
beginning to think that I was the only person using Anchor 'cos most peeople
talked about DMC. I've always used Anchor, largely because it doesn't knot
quite so much and I love the colours. I do use other threads from time to
time but always come back to Anchor.

I have used both and like everything else in this group, a lot of why I like
it is personnel preference. I always use Anchor white and black for all
projects. I think that Anchor has a different Pallet than DMC and I prefer
Anchor floss for ALL my TW patterns. Like others, I don't have as much
tangles with Anchor as with DMC. Which one is superior? - probably both.

Hmmm..... after reading all the messages.... I feel that both DMC and Anchor
have their advantage and disadvantage.... I used to see Anchor in
Singapore..... but it seems disappeared or has it not..... maybe i could go
other LNS to check.... and the price.... I am not so sure of the Anchor's
one..... but DMC is definitly more expensive....

Oh... yes.... we have cosmo's in singapore and it is slightly cheaper than
DMC.... and the quality is softer..... and it had a furry effect after your
stitching which don't really quite like...

I ALWAYS use Anchor - have tried DMC, but didn`t like the feel or look of it
so well, personally. Anchor have a bigger range of colours, too.

Further to my note about my preference for "Anchor" - I noticed someone
commented on the fact that the Anchor black is REALLY black. It certainly
is - in fact I very rarely use it as it`s SO black - a clour you very rarely
see in nature! It`s gorgeous if you`re doing a design - say an abstract
sort of design that NEEDS a real black though.

I use Anchor or DMC, depending on what I'm doing. For the more
expensive, time consuming, intricate patterns, I use Anchor. If it's
someting small, like book mark, a bib, etc. I'm trying to use my DMC
up, so tha what I use. Eventually, though, I won't use any DMC. I
prefer Anchor (doesn't knot as easily, colors seem more vibrant,
etc...)

Hi Pat and all-The same is true or so it appears, for their white.....it is a
brilliant white. And although DMC came out with the B5200, I think the Anchor
is still a brighter white. But for me, I am a DMC fan....for some reason the
Anchor tangles more for me -Marie in Pa.

This is one of those "chicken or egg" debates -- some prefer Anchor (like me)
and others prefer DMC. Unfortunately, I live in a cross-stitch wasteland,
neither is readily available to me! Fortunately, I've got the whole Anchor
collection and a good amount of DMC - so whatever I have on hand is what I use!

I am reminded that my mother and grandmother just about worshipped D.M.C.
and my mother felt cheated that it was (in the 50's and 60's ) almost
impossible to find or even afford if we did find it-- When I began to be
able to afford D.M.C threads and floss I was already married and had found
out about catalog shopping..I remember holding my first ball of D.M.C.
thread in my hand, I was holding history ! (I blush to admit that I thought
it was all made in France !) I think mother would have traded her third
born (me) if she could have found any D.M.C. Thread in all of Rochester N.Y.
back in 1958.
It smacked of death bed advice when mom once told me to only use D.M.C. if I
could afford it -that's what grandma used ! (I admit buying knit crosheen
and other brands..)
I remember shopping with mom when I little more than a babe.. perhaps 5 or
6 and she getting very excited to find whole boxes of knit-crosheen at some
store.. and searching for just the right colors for her projects ... I
think, now, that she may have been making things for my eldest sister, who
was newly married. I remember always searching very hard for flosses and
crochet threads and never finding enough for even the smallest projects back
then - and books ? just those small ones that Woolworth carried.. Needlework
was considered ancient nonsense back in the 50's and 60's - something
immigrants and farmer's wives did !
Strangely - or perhaps, not, Anchor is what is almost impossible for me to
get with my one local needlework store is closed (she had started to carry
it just as she closed down.) I had pretty much decided to stick with D.M.C.
anyway. I like Anchor crochet/tatting thread, though, for certain kinds of
crochet and certainly tatting (I am finding tatting very unforgiving when it
comes to thread quality) Anchor is very strong and has good sheen. That is
needed in Filet Crochet - you don't want too much stretch or the picture
will be out of shape and strength is also an advantage. D.M. C. has it's
own Cordonnet which is just as beautiful to work with and I have made at
least one large picture with Cordonnet and have been tatting this week with
some size 40 that I bought several years ago for a project I never
started..Love working with fine threads, I use 20,10, 8,5 only when I must
or the pattern calls for it ! (Truly, I do ! )

Wouldn't be ironic if people stop buying D.M.C. solely because it has
become 'common' (think about J& Coats if you want common !) The lady that
ran the Needlework store here swore that D.M.C. wasn't treating her with
respect because she was a small distributor, and that something was wrong
with the white D.M.C. floss (I never really understood what, though she
claimed it did not cover fabric and tangled too easily.) I was never
convinced of her reasoning and have never seen any evidence of problems with
any D.M.C. thread so I and just went to Joanne's or Michaels when I needed
floss. TO me the fact that floss and good crochet threads are finally
widely available is a blessing, I wish mom was here to enjoy what she could
only dream about - We are finally coming into our own. May we never go back
to the drought years of my youth ! Enjoy, Ladies, what we have, while we
have it, as my husband reminded me recently, Renaissances do not last
forever. (perceptive fellow isn't he?) Kathy Mary
